View Full Version : National ride updates

THE CAMPAIGN BEGINS TOMORROW

6000 bikes flooded Wellington city this morning and met with enormous public support.

Twelve representatives from the BIKEOI group were admitted to Nick Smith's office.
Although their points were listened to they met with no particular response.
Mr Smith is 'receptive' to more injury prevention campaigns.
This is not enough.

So the message being sent out is this:

THE CAMPAIGN BEGINS TOMORROW

Watch this space.

my girl gave me a scare on saturday by refusing to start! flat battery, so got dad to check it. he got it going, and then we tested it when i got home from work. turned the key, went to press the starter, there was a loud click, and the electrics died. all i could see was a huge bill looming. lol. turned out that two of the wires for the battery had been put on the wrong way round. never been so relieved that it started up.
shes now been polished by way of an apology for the names i called her. lol

Two different people from TV1 called me today about the numbers and leaving time, I suggested they contacted Les, but some how my name was on the list of contacts for the BIKEOI to Wellington. I did say that there were alot of smaller groups heading down in there own time. They asked about the one leaving around 12.30 because they called around 10-10.30ish, so they missed the main ride I guess by then eh?

I have given Lars' details to the guy who called the BRONZ phone, they want to send their cameraman with his bike to join the ride. And they thought it was leaving 6am, but it IS 9AM departure from Sanson!

Lars (Natioanl Ride Coordinator) has asked for all motorcycles to gather at Sanson so the entry to Wellingotn occurs as one big group. (Otherwise join up with the smaller group waiting at Papkowhai, just no 'dribs and drabs'!)

rode on to sanson, and got chatting with a couple of others. one of whom only has one leg, so i was able to pass on the molesworth st parking info. also got a bit of info re the smaller groups... many of them are going to flat refuse to park at the stadium after riding all that way. i didnt bother trying to sway them, as they are going to park by the beehive anyways. all i can say is good luck to the marshalls

We are ready for them.
We can't stop them from parking anywhere they want to or are going to. But if they park illegally they will suffer the consequences and be at the mercy of the Welly towies. And we will cheerfully remind them of this fact when they try and park in non-designated areas. The police and Wellington City Council staff will be the enforcers and will be out in force.
Parking is at the stadium and unless you get here at the crack of dawn there probably won't be any legal parking any closer by.
The stadium is the spot and is merely a hop, skip and a jump from parliament.

No time for stressing, all is planned now, nothing else can be done. Just set back and let it happen. Sure there may well be idiots, you can not cater to the lowest demoninator. The organisers have made it fairly clear about expectations, people dont conform at their own risk.

No fall out will land on the organisers!

They can collect their bikes from Harbour City Towing then, with my blessing

Mr One Leg will be welcomed at Parliament, ill even move other bikes for him if he shows up but cenotaph and pavements are off limits, once the room for 300 or so bikes as reserved is gone, its the stadium

We appreciate some have come SO far, and really respect that effort they've made, but a 200m walk is NOT a big ask for the able bodied

Marshals will ask nicely, and only once
The next question these 'stubborn' peoples will be asking is "where is the tow impound yard?"

I have two officers meeting us at mckays crossing going to Papakowhai to meet up with what was to be main group and two more officers. These 4 guys have been tasked to provide escort right through to the stadium.

About 30 bikes went through Egmont Village (just South of New Plymouth) before and after 7.00am. Main group after 7.00 will be the BRONZ organised group but smaller groups earlier and probably more before I got there. Many also made the main trip yesterday.

Tawa to Wellington didn't seem enough of an effort so I rode to my folks place in Levin yesterday to join the ride in today.

On the way there were heaps and heaps of bikes heading South. (Geez I waved a lot). Lots of groups of two or three bikes.

So as well as the numbers in the "main" rides, you can expect a lot of riders have already gone to Wellington "on their own".

Awesome.

A caller to NewstalkZB Wellington is reporting that he has seen oncoming motorcycles 4 (?) abreast for at least 8 kilometres on the Foxton straights and they are still continuing. His estimate is 1500 bikes.

His comment is that Wellington is in for "one hell of a show". :jerry:

This really does suck without pics. I mean really where's the "eye-in-the-sky" coverage? Where's the "on the spot reporters"? Where's the eye-witness reports?

Now if we were in America... hahah

I'll just have to wait. It would look cool from a chopper though.

Key's also been quoted as saying something along the lines of "it's not the National party that's come up with these increases, it's ACC". So he's distancing himself and the party from ACC, but he does add the usual line about "increases are needed". I think they're nervous.

Later Dr Smith spoke to the noisy protest to try to explain the problems with ACC, but he was shouted down with a chant of ``bulls..t''.

Mr Hutchison told the crowd that the meeting with Dr Smith had not gone well and the minister was not listening to their demands.

He thanked those who came for conducting a peaceful protest, but warned the next time they gathered it might not be the same and the bikers could bring Wellington to a grinding halt.

``The war has just begun,'' Mr Hutchison said.

Hon Dr Nick Smith
Minister for ACC
17 November 2009
Media Statement
Motorcycle accident record cannot be ignored

ACC minister Nick Smith responded to today’s motorcycle protest over proposed ACC levy increases by highlighting the significant increase in fatalities and claims from motorcycle accidents.

“Forty six motorcyclists died last year in accidents, the highest number in a decade and nearly one a week,” Dr Smith said.

“The number of motorcycle accident claims rose from 871 in 1998 to 5044 in 2008, a greater increase than any area of claims. Over the past decade the road toll has dropped by 27% from 501 to 366 while the motorcycle toll has increased 21%.These accident statistics cannot be ignored by the Government or motorcycle fraternity.

“These increases cannot be explained away by the increase in motorcycle numbers. In 1998 there was an accident claim for every 69 bikes whereas today there is a claim for every 19 bikes.

“I acknowledge today’s protest and the concern of motorcyclists on the scale of the levy increases being proposed by ACC’s Board. My hope is that we might turn this negative debate over levies into a positive dialogue with Government over how we can improve motorcycle safety.

“The scale of ACC’s financial problems means levy increases across the board are inevitable but it is unlikely the Government will agree to the scale of increases being proposed by the ACC Board.

“ACC has received a record 2750 submissions on its levy proposals – up from 54 last year. More than 90% of the submissions are from motorcyclists. The Board will carefully consider the submissions before making recommendations to the Government.

“An option I am exploring with motorcycle clubs is a portion of the levy going into road safety programmes targeted at injury prevention. We need to work together on reversing the awful trend in motorcycle fatalities and injuries.”

What a prick (shit head)
Someone with a nack for producing intelligent rebuttal needs to respond to this and fast. This is first class politicking from Smith (shit head) and there needs to be a response. Each of the ‘sound bite’ points he made need to be challenged and sent to the media. Maybe Mr Hutchison could do this or Les if he isn’t riding back. I know its only half an hour until the national news but we need to get straight back at that statement.

there were no arrests, no negitive events, and no tickets. This includes the chap on the Harley that did a burn out at the lights on Molesworth/Pipatea..The bike cop ripped him a new hole but did not issue him a ticket. Over all the Police were impressed with the riders and supports behaviour.

Given the size of this venue and the people on site this was a remarkable feat.

I know its only half an hour until the national news but we need to get straight back at that statement.

Theres the exit plan right there

Actually its a good one , read last line ,,, Cant fault that ( as in he is right it is a worrying trend -yes car drivers are killing themselves with more efficiency)

now all it need is someone to say something like ...if you invest $X then you will get $y in ACC Savings its all about saving money to reduce the debt...sooo

Bronz or Uruseless or even -Autocycle Adverse ,,,need to pick this up and run with it .... we train X people they are involved in Y crashes which is less than an untrained rider therefore if this were extrapolated out the Government would save $X a year

Student loans look great on the books !

Nz has been told to lose Debt and they will tax your Grandma if they could ....

Well as a part of the fundraising arm of this protest action, I am sad that we may have to potentially pay for damages for some dickhead, that obviously needed to show every one how small his apppendage is :puke:

All that sort of shit did today, is to potentially deplete the fighting fund that some of us are actively trying to increase to fight these increases.

The time for noise is upon us! Today was not the day.

I completely agree! However, there are some people that have their personal name against this event, and if a bill is forthcoming for damages, why should they have to personally pay for someone's lack of control? That was my point, they shouldn't.

You guys did better than really well today

Loser Smith couldn't wait - got a press release a short time ago:

Hon Dr Nick Smith
Minister for ACC
17 November 2009
Media Statement
Motorcycle accident record cannot be ignored

the first thing that comes to mind, why not? they are ignoring the accident record of cyclists, rugby players, skydivers, rock climbers, pedestrians, elderly, people who live in houses........ Sorry nick, but if we as the public can pay the full cost of all these accidents, then we as the public can fucking well pay a significant portion of any motorcycle accidents, also whats with the 5044 claims number, the ACC wiki only shows 3173.

Being involved with the Auckland protest at the weekend and seeing what about a kilometre of bikes looke like what the fook would 26k's of bikes have looked like???? It must have been so impressive.
Well done to all the organisers and all who attended. Those that couldnt make it (like me) followed every bit of information that came out of the day on here and in the media and I for one felt so proud to belong to the motorcycling community. Thanks for representing me/us in wellington today.

Graham it was just fuggin awesome mate, it really was. The bride and I watched from on high as bikes poured into the stadium up the ramp, in the opposite direction to those coming down the road, so you've got hundreds of bikers travelling 3 or 4 abreast coming at you and going away from you as far as the eye could see, it was mesmerizing, they came and they came and....

As for the speakers, they all did pretty well, quite daunting to speak in front of that many gnarly bikers. The Labour leader did particularly well in raising the spirit, Les and the others did very well and old shitty smithy impressed in that he actually addressed the baying hounds rather than hiding in his office but seconds into his little deluded monologue the same old crap came out and he was met with an amazing crescendo of BULLSHIT BULLSHIT! from the crowd. Even my reserved lady wife was giving him some at the top of her voice. He really is a smarmy lying bastardus.

The weather was great the crowds were magnificent and the organisation was superb. A brilliant day and I was proud to be part of it, Wellington has never seen the like.

I got soaked and cold on my return journey to the Naki but you know what I don't give a fack, today I was part of something special, the day the little fella stood face to face with the mighty of this land and spat in their eye.

They will remember us for sure, well done every one :clap::clap: Pics tomorrow

ACC do cover widows and widowers, they pay rather a large amount of funeral expenses as well as a weekly pay out to the surviving spouse and also to any children if they loose a Father. Smaller children it is placed into a trust fund as far as I know. If a teenager studying a weekly allowance is payed to them.

As Nana Mac said there are payments that help out those of us who have lost partners/parents ... and those can continue for a number of years ... depending on a huge amount of circumstances ... it helps the partner with the ability to pay bills with around $5800 towards funeral costs ... there is also a one off survivorship grant ... and ongoing payments for some ... lots of different factors are included in the calculations ... I received the minimum amount of support ... and it was definately a help. This is a side issue to what they are saying ... and it is interesting trying to make this a main focus.

Were we lucky with the weather or WHAT!!!

Today it is bucketing down with rain in Levin and I am so pleased the ride was yesterday. Who cares if you get wet going home, it's the actual day that counts.

I hope they find the arsehole on the Harley and make him pay for any damage he's done. It pisses me off that people think it's funny to do dumb shit like this. All it does is make people go "stupid fucking motorcyclists" and it's no wonder the public has this perception of us as idiots who all ride Harleys.

My office is on SH1 in Levin and I saw (and heard) hundreds of bikes heading north yesterday afternoon. I was so pissed off I couldn't on the ride myself!

I was overtaken on my way to a meeting in Foxton last night by a few riders heading home. A couple of lovely bikes with personalised plates - didn't catch the first one but the second one was something like XILR8. The rain was just starting then.

I think ALL the organisers, ALL the riders (bar the two fuckwits on Harleys) and the police deserve a big round of applause. You certainly made sure our voices were heard and I hope something good comes out of it.:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

My husband wants to know when the badges will be coming out? Good source of income for the organisers and there would be heaps of people who would buy one. I'd buy one to support the ride even though I wasn't able to be there on the day.

Edited[-----------]
As Nasty has said calculations do vary, but death can be almost as expensive to ACC as on going rehab, as sometimes the payments are ongoing for children and if the main earner being the partner killed - was on a high wage bracket.

I was an at home mum with a 7 month and three year old so i had NO earnings coming in for awhile and lived on our norton savings within the last hundred in panic.
And while I don't agree with the prinicpals of the levy hike to Motorcyclists based on a few concepts.

It was damn good ACC came to the party, and it should be a relief to know, if you go down your family should be ok - dependant on circumstances.
So yes ACC levies can cover deaths into the future.

Hanne
18th November 2009, 09:52
Think it is important to show this is not just about levy hikes, or about motorbikes for that matter.
Govt is trying to make fundamental changes to ACC, starting with bikes, change to user pays, privatise.
We know this.
I also think ACC is a great system and do not want to see it gone.
I would like to see costs more fairly distributed, and the focus on community responsibility, not singling out small groups insurance-style.

1. Early at the meeting point SH1, only about 50 bikes, then someone opened the floodgates!

2. An ocean of bikes but still more came

3. And came and came

4. Nick smith caves and takes a pillion ride to appease the masses.(fookin ape)

5. Far from alienating the public, I think we made a good day out for this little group of pensioners, they were loving it.

Do anyone know if we can get hold of all the raw video footage TV One news took on the day?? They had bucket loads of cameras on the ground, in the air and on bikes. I had expected a few more aerial shots on the news and quite frankly a bit longer coverage considering the effort they put in on the day.
The footage from the helicopter showing the convoys stretching along the motorways and viewing the merger of SH1 and SH2 would special.
If we could get this footage we could make "Bikeoi 2009, The Movie".

would the news crews be willing to give their footage for the dvd mentioned earlier? could make a whole bunch and sell them and raise money to repair the parking lot if needed that way. i would love to own a dvd of the day, from the meet at sanson to BULLSHIT BULLSHIT BULLSHIT to leaving the stadium.

Agreed but ALL TV stations are apparently unable by some copywrite bullshit (bulls shit bull shit bull shit) that they cannot release anythiung they have not publicly broadcast
:(

Hmm I was talking to a news editor friend of mine last night to find out if we could get some of that footage. I got the impression that it was possible... but I'm not sure how easy it would be to get bits that weren't broadcast. (He said the problem was that there was just SO MUCH...)

Anyway, he said the best course of action would be to put a request to TVNZ (who hold anything 'recent' i.e. last 3 years!). And he said if they ask for money for it not to bother, and he may be able to help out. SO... I don't know if you/anyone else has put a formal request in StoneY?
