You know how most TV/movie depictions of motorcycle riders completely suck arse?

I have found one that doesnt. This TV show is called Sons of Anarchy. Season 2 has just finished airing in the US.

Basically (for the classically trained among you) the story is Hamlet, except the setting is an outlaw biker gang based in a fictional Northern California town.

It sounds kind of lame, but as with all TV it is all about the execution. Here we have a really good cast (Katey Segall, Ron Perlman) plus a number of people who you've seen before, and the writing is top notch. If you enjoyed "The Shield" (which is in my view the best cop show made in the last ten years) then the guy behind the Shield (Kurt Sutter) is the guy behind this (he also plays a cameo role in it).

This is TV like the Sopranos that has you cheering for the "Bad" guys, and pondering the whole thing of who are the bad guys and who are the good guys, really: that whole thing of its not black or white, just shades of grey.

This is totally worth using some of your "broadband" capacity to download, or do what I did and get the DVDs from Amazon.

Bonus for motorcycle riders: Most of the cast actually ride. Sure, its all Harleys but they're actually riding.

Cheering? Harleys?

It's pretty clear most bike show producers aren't bikers, because they miss the plot every time.

Biking is about the cameraderie, the skills, the machines, the journey, the destination, the adventure, and the bit they completely miss - the feeling of it.

I got to series 1 Episode 4 and gave up....what looked promising ended up rather lackluster.

there is a lot of setup/exposition in those early episodes that pays off later in the series.

and its only INCIDENTALLY about bikers: like the Sopranos was INCIDENTALLY about the Mafia.

I dont give a crap what anyone else thinks of it to be honest, I like it, Ive shared my opinion, and if your opinion is you don't like it, well you're entitled to a misguided and wrong opinion.

The Lone Rider

The original plot loosely follows Hamlet, with a father speaking from the dead, a matriarch, and a new father the son clashes heads with.

Season 2 drops that line of plot and does something different, with Season 3 picking up from the end of Season 2 and getting maybe a tad carried away.

But at the end of the day, it is a show so they have to add in some stuff for the sake of entertainment.

The script is written accurately in so far as the way the bikers talk in club lingo, as well as the relationships between the various roles in the club and their hang arounds. All around, it's fairly accurate light into that "world" of biking with the violence and storyline glorified for the sake of TV.

Anti hero's or the normalisation of criminals? Its a bloody wonderful HD advertising medium but at the general expense of motorcyclings image I suspect... (not that I really care)

I dunno - I personally wont watch it on priciple but then again I have very little time for TV. I watch Time Team, some historical programs (I enjoyed the one on the stock market crash and the medievil mind) and feck all else. Its not supposed to be a doco, its just pure entertaining fiction.

Katey Segal is absolutely superb as the matriach. Brilliant

Jax is a lovely toy boy, but waaaaaaaaaay too pretty for my tastes.

I hope it doesn't go all mushy but everyone has their different opion about things

depends what you mean by mushy: after the end of s2, s3 has to be about Jax recovering Abel from the people who kidnapped him, right? So that's the core story arc.

Bear in mind that the bikes and biker lifestyle are windowdressing for exploring Sutter's themes which revolve around a code of honour, do people do what is right, or what is expedient, family and family relationships etc. He is blessed with a clear vision and story direction, he has a seven series arc planned, and is blessed with an excellent talented cast.

I think it will be structured like The Shield (where Sutter was on staff): that had a seven series run, and the final scene of the final episode was directly relevant to series 1 episode 1, scene 1.

In my view series 3 is much better than series 2, and the payoff in the final episode is really good.

Check out Kurt Sutter's blog: He isn't very active presently because he is flat out writing (they may have even started shooting) series 4.

I get where HDC is coming from and I can see the story arc, I just don't see why they can't keep what initially gets us watching in the series as it progresses (this is true for a lot of TV shows, not just SOA).

Another thing to note towards the end Tony was openly talking "family" business with his wife , this doesnt happen in the mob plus his kids were moving on .
He had gambling problem hence $$$ worries . His supposedly killing , was it or did he turn ..:shit:

It seems a bit different to what ya expect of the yanks aye, the good people, children etc are dieing, usually the badies die and the goodies win.

I thought i would hate it but instead I am hooked... sure it is a bit sanitised for general consumption but in spirit its not a long way from the truth ( in my own experience anyway).
Its not supposed to be a doco, its just pure entertaining fiction.

Katey Segal is absolutely superb as the matriach. Brilliant

Jax is a lovely toy boy, but waaaaaaaaaay too pretty for my tastes.

Now the irish guy Chibs...hmmmmmmmmmmm oh yeah baby.

And Bobby, I know so many guys like him...totally real character.

same... and all but Chibs I agree with ya :scooter:

The episode that just aired was S03E01 and is called "SO". that season has aired in the US. Season 4 is in preproduction/shooting and will have an air date in September this year I think.

The first two seasons are good, too. Season 3 starts pretty slow, but the last couple of episodes are as good as anything Ive ever seen, including THE WIRE and THE SOPRANOS (and of course STAR TREK).

there is an episode called "NS" as well: Jax wears two rings one with "SO" and the other with "NS" on it, and thats the reference. in case you were wondering.

It's getting better all the time, it's entertainment, the bullshit is there only vaguely in the background where no-one takes themselves seriously. There's Hellboy and the tough wise-cracking bounty hunter from The Chronicles Of Riddick as shrewd leader calling the shots and Brad Pitt look-alike just generally oozing coolness with their hard-bitten staunch-as-fuck biker brothers having shoot-outs with the enemy left, right, and centre while the local cops owe them favours and look the other way... All chicks on Sons of Anarchy are smoking hot and slightly ruffled/ragged, And Peg Bundy still has big tits and as biker chick is one tough female. And the bikers have no qualms about baseball bat or fist fights as well as guns and knife fights.. Whats not to like??

The Biker genre has always been a bit 'schlocky'. Brando set the bar and Billy Jack lowered it. The TV extends it.

I love how June Stahl's scheming and lying (not to mention shooting her partner) came back and bit her in the arse. And Chibs and Opie got to get even (though really Clay is to blame for Donna's death)

Season 3 started slow, then the big diversion, but I thought the payoff was good.

I've been watching FALLING SKIES. Cable series about alien invasion. Starring Noah Wyle and Moon Bloodgood. It started well but was waaaaay waaaaaay too talky, and there was insufficient violence. I watched thru till the end but meh.

Hmmm, finely got round to watching it... thought it was going a bit predictable but the turn around that the club was in on it all was good, loughed at the wanker guy when he gave over the counterfit and sat on the scot's lap and was offered a wank, clay said to put it away LOL, notice the t in a O so the IRA would get the blame for the atf and jimmies death... yeah I enjoyed it, spose thats my TV time used for the year.

For those watching it before TV3 buys the rights to broadcast in NZ, it may be a good idea for there to be a polite agreement on here not to post plot spoilers. For those who will see it first on TV3.

Although a 10 second click onto Youtube, or Kurt Sutters own pages, will show you a fair amount of footage and plot.

They've already given the public a clue. Those adverts that get run, where a montage of clips from upcoming shows is flashed across the screen, include Season 4.

S4 is where I 'discovered' SOA. I wish I had started sooner but luckily someone gave me S1 on DVD and is promising 2&3 on my birthday.

And was gooood....

I agree.

Though I was (and still am) a little worried the writer(s) are gonna run out of ideas and just start throwing in random baddies and factions here and there.

Kinda felt like that last season.

And they did that a little bit in 501 with the sudden introduction of Pope (who they all knew of beforehand!) and that dating firm guy.
