Let's design a trailer. It needs to transport 2-3 bikes.

It has to be able to built from standard trojan parts, by someone with with a gasless MIG welder from mild steel, in the average kiwi blokes workshops' concrete floor.

I'm sure there are people here who can do the maths, comment on the legalities, etc etc.

Properly drawn plans need to be available for download.

The design would be owned by the community, properly licensed so no person can steal it and call it their own. (GPL documentation license?)

Sources for purchasing everything need to be included, along with a materials list so its easy to buy all the bits already cut to length.

Dumb idea??

Sounds like quite a good idea to me (not that I can weld - but nonetheless). An off-the-shelf, known-to-be-legal, known-to-be-properly-designed, and open (GPL/Creative Commons/Public Domain/etcetera).

Have a look at the trailer my dad, and one of my sponsors Peter Carbines built.

It's pretty awesome. The tailgate works as a perfect ramp. Rectangular section steel, and some square section smaller stuff for the rail guard. for the bike wheels we had steel rails that were shaped like this \__/ and a piece of that upright to catch the front wheel in, and tie it to.

Can't give you dimensions, but it was bloody strong and heavy.

I wonder if it doesnt need to be "bloody strong and heavy."

I regularly borrow a 3 bike trailer from the bike shop, and its light as a feather.
