View Full Version : Canterbury: Round the block (22 Nov)
miSTa
16th November 2009, 19:25
When: Sunday 22 November 2009
Where: Meet 9:00am, leave 9:30am, Caltex Russley (cnr Russley and Yaldhurst Rds)
Route: http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=104526425749268137952.0004786d96ad8d3fe6bdd&ll=-42.82361,172.133789&spn=1.913806,5.410767&z=8
NOTE the slight detour to Blackball (lunch stop...maybe).
Weather: Don't care, going regardless.
Seeing how I can no longer make the Magpie Madness Rally on Saturday, laRikin and myself are going for a ride round the block (chch -> Arthurs Pass -> Lewis Pass -> chch) on Sunday.
All welcome but this wont be a ride for beginners/learners.

So around 550 kms for the day - what are you looking at 7.5 - 8 hours ? Been a fair while since I've done that run.

Yeah about that. Its a ride I don't do often enough - to many rallys.

Just done a Google Map and it says 581k's and near enough to 8 hours.
Should be a good wee ride. (normally is)
When we have gone to Westport and done the Buller we can do it in 9 hours.
Minimal stops with one good lunch break.
I noticed that you did not include a trip in to Greymouth, miSTa.

That'll shave half an hour (not going through Greymouth).
Reefton or Jacksons for Lunch would be my thoughts... if I was thinking.... edit: just noticed Blackball suggested in original post.
Like to go but just don't know.
Trying to replace brake pads at the mo but the pin is stuck.

only 547kms?
Transalper
18th November 2009, 14:33
Is that an actual question Dave?
Just noticed the Blackball is a probable lunch destination.
My gps software estimates just 557km from my place round and home again, so that includes the ride out to the Caltex Russley.

Well as I know where we are riding and used Google Earth.
It came out as 581K's from the centre of town, I will stand by that.
May take my GPS to see what is comes up with. (that is if the battery's last)
At the end of the day, it is the ride we are doing and distance will be what ever it is and the weather will do what ever it wants.
I do not care either way, it is still going to be another great ride.
And I'm doing it.
Who knows we may go to Westport and do the Buller Gorge as well.:bleh:

Just a cheap, good old Garmin Etrex.

Well bring the chocolate's Q and SDU will follow you on the ride and ride with us next time we go around the block.
At this rate it will be next weekend.

lol, that's a bigger block, but still a block. Usually get to see Haast or Nelson in the 1000km runs.
IIRC the last big block ride miSTa set up was a 1000km one.
I prefer my 1000km days to be Saturdays or days when I don't have work the next day.
600km runs are ok with work the next day though.

Thanks for the offer, it's all good now.
I get on real well with Linton and he's a lot closer to home so I popped round to see him and he got out his 'special tool' and had it done in a couple of minutes. Didn't even have to get it out of the back of my van.
He just knocked a nicely sized Torx bit in to what was left of the allen key hole while I helped support/steady it, then he plugged the socket wrench in and unscrewed it.
I had been trying unsuccessfully with a vice grip.
Now I've got a nice new pin and had a bit of advice on how to tighten them nicely without over doing it.
So I should be good to go Sunday and at this stage I plan to be there.
Cheers
TA.

Well home again.
A bit wet at the start, but cleared by Springfield.
Over casted and near white out at the Viaduct.
Got better and better weather wise to Springs Junction.
Then went back to over cast.
Traffic was light and roads pretty good on the most part.
Than is apart from the road works at Arthur's Pass.
Once again a great wee ride, 6000K's already on the Monster and nearly up for a new tire.(Bugger)

Did not take my GPS and my trip meter is still working properly.
So can not give you a mileage. (kilometerage?)
Changed the battery on the clock and all's good again.
And I'm sure you will and soon.
Will have to do a slower ride so 250's can do it and have fun, as well.

Kilometer-age, it is you want, young KiwiPhoenix - I also accompanied laRIKin, miSTa, and Transalper for 555kms indicated on the odddddometer on the TDM, with an overall fuel consumption rate of 18 kms/litre.
Handy Round-the-Block Tip #1: Watch out for the wekas near the Moana side - they seem to be suicidally attracted to Michelin Siracs.

lol, yep couldn't believe it when more came out to have a go at you, even turning around to get in the way.
My log shows 547km from the Russley Garage to Spags Pitza in Sydenham taking 8 Hours and 22 minutes total including all stops for fuel, 1 hour lunch at Blackball, 20minutes in Springs Junction with Ice cream.... couple of other 3 or 4 minute stops.
Other than a couple of overtaking maneuvers my whole trip was pretty much at ticket safe speeds.

We did not go to Greymouth after all, so the K's were shorter than I first thought.
The strange thing is, going to Black Ball is about the same as the way I normally go around the block.
As the roads were good to ride, I think I will go around the block via the Black Ball loop from now on.
May or may not go it to Black Ball it self tho.
But then again, as the lunch was good I could use that as my lunch stop.
As the food is better than the two other place's we normally stop for a lunch.
