View Full Version : NATIONAL BIKEOI - Lessons learnt?

Overall an excellent effort. A lot of work in the planning came to fruition big time! Overall I thought the whole thing went very well. Rider behaviour was brilliant! The parkling at the stadium seemed to work well and the message was CLEARLY given at parliament...

The only thing I would change would be to make it a 10:30 departure from Papakowhai / Avalon. This would give people plenty of tme to get the the rally start at 12.00. I was still riding in at 12.00.

I guess one disadvantage would be that people who wanted to take just lunchtime off would not be able to attend the ride... And there may have been other reasons that this wasn't done.

Any other lessons to be learnt?

Do the next one on a weekend so many others (including myself) can attend. Pissed I couldn't come to this one, as many others will be.

Yeah I couldn't believe what time I finally got to parliament. After half past 12. And who said it was only 200 metres from the stadium?!?

And the police were going around checking the legality of all the bikes at the stadium. So some people may have learnt an unfortunate lesson in that regard...

Now that's a bit dirty! But I suppose the cops thought that would be the easiest way to pay for their time.

I had hoped to make it but work said otherwise.

Weekend activity would be good but there'll be nobody at Parliament. I can see why today was chosen, there was a purpose, but there'll be opportunities aplenty if the twats don't scale their proposals back.

So keen for a re-run, and maybe make it a decent rally even, with less pressure on time! It took forever to get away from Papakowhai, i dont think thhe organisers expected quite the numbers they got at that point!

I can't see why MP's cant front up in the weekend. I have seen many an MP turn up to weekend events for other reasons.

They have taxpayer funded accommodation if needed.

That way an even larger biker turnout could occur.

Given that everyone was well behaved riding there, it is a shame the police had to go around checking bike legality issues.... I assume rego and warrant checks for the media to get some DIRT from?

I heard the commentary on the 1pm news.

It was all very civilised and the media gave it a positive spin.

Les was speaking and then there was a was a huge boo sound when Nick Smith appeared.

Very funny.

There's no way they would've been able to check all the bikes for WOF and Reg, they were probably just looking at custom jobs, bikes that looked like gang member's and old dungas.
The weekend is good if you just want numbers, but you really need to pick a day, like today, when Parliament is sitting to get the message across to the MPs and to disrupt city traffic.

I gotta call bollocks on that one as i got to watch them for a couple of hours... they were just quite relaxed, checkin some bikes out... One of the guys asked me where the toilets where and then commented he was a little wary to go in there because it might contain a group of pissed off hairy arsed bikers... i told him if he got lucky George Michael would be in there... jolly fine chap... so i'm callin bollocks... maybe gave enough of a presence and that's why several bikes started to disappear after a couple of minutes...

Unfortunately I was also unable to make it down but the fact it was a Tuesday makes the numbers all the more impressive IMHO.
First day back at Parliament after a recess too.

So anyone have numbers on how many bikers turned up?

Word is that at Papakowhai they stopped counting at 3000 but reckoned no more than 3500.
At Avalon they stopped counting at 2000 but reckoned no more than 2500.
Why they stopped counting, who knows.
Add to that the hundreds of bikes parked on the streets around parliament and you get 5000 easy, perhaps even as many as 6000, the original expected number.

Police *unofficially* counted 4600 , with more still arrinving at papawozzaname. Another 2000 at the duck pond and maybe 500 at Molesworth St.

I reckon over 7000, and 800 people (pillions etc0

Yup,
Got asked about it everywhere I stopped on the way home too.....

As for Lesson Learnt....
Well, despite the majority of motorcyclists being well behaved, CAGE drivers still don't know how to react when there is a faster vehicle behind them on the motorway... This lead to a bit of use of the emergency lanes!

Also, people should remember what is written all over their back when they display poor riding... Although these particular people probably don't give a Fcuk!

And - when the road makers put up signs saying "Passing lane 4 km ahead " and "Queues" (permanent sign) you KNOW they are aware that it's a balls up.

Lessons learnt :

Randomly picking a road to turn down on the basis that it must sooner or later meet up with the road you should have turned down a while back can turn a boring main highway return into an adv ride

When confronted by trees fallen across the road , one is glad that one included a hatchet in ones tool kit

One regrets that one did not sharpen the hatchet

Lesson learned by lazy cage driver that sat in his car for twenty minutes while I spent half an hour clearing away fallen trees. A bike needs only a narrow and wriggly path through vegetation. Your car cannot follow. If you had helped I would have cleared a larger path

While it is wise to have an unbrella strapped on the bike, it is pointless if the umbrella and bike are both still back at the motel when one emerges from the pub after dinner to pissing down rain

One can get more soaked in five minutes walking from pub to motel, without umbrella, than in 600 km travel with waterproof bike gear on.

I went to the stadium just before people started leaving, to help with the traffic control and the biker cops were all at the bottom end, off their bikes and looking at some custom bikes, talking to some of their owners and seemed to enjoy being around so may bikes, like any true biker.

Except for their attire, you couldn't tell them from any other biker, happy to chat with other bikers and to see other riders' handy work. I trully doubt it they did any "checking" on the bikes.

As far as I am concerned, kudos on Wgtn police for doing a brillian job and helping us (except for the end when they left cars and a couple of trucks going up the ramp at the stadium, while all the bikes were going down :( )

I also learned that I have a massive blind spot, Just to my left, and no doubt the phenomena is repeated on my right.

Also, after walking back to the Train Station and finding a toilet I learned my Fly was already down, 5 points for being efficient.

And the police were going around checking the legality of all the bikes at the stadium. So some people may have learnt an unfortunate lesson in that regard...

What a bunch of dirty cunts.

You bastard!

You beat me to it.....

you unthoughtful and UN-thankful little wingers.

Lesson learned - some wingers will always bitch for the wrong crap.
