I am about mid pack A grade level on a good day. enjoy karapoti etc..
I ride a CRF 450. am pretty laid back.

Yea man do agree with riding on your own, plus a long walk back on your own with a smashed up bike, best to have someone to take turns haha ....

I normally drive from the Hutt over to the Mungatuk's side for a play around aye, sadly at the moment my fork seals need to be done and front wheel bearing but once thats all sorted your welcome to come out, normally ride with who ever hasn't totalled there bike so it can just be myself out there sometimes...

Was going every weekend but now its looking like it could be every second weekend until after christmas.

Ill be back from Oz early next year and keen for a ride anytime .. just live 5 minutes away from the Maungatouk' side of Karipoti ... used to go out there every weekend. Ride it till the red is usually up to something everyweekend. Kezzafish has no bike at the moment but we used to ride heaps around that way too.

Hey mate I go for rides around Karapoti every now and then with another couple of guys, was also at the Moonshine trial ride. Probably get out once or twice a month, do the odd race every now and then (looking at doing the Bushriers 2 hour cross country on the 29th) but we are pretty casual nowadays - unfit and rusty!

Newbie to the forum and i to am keen to get out for a ride as i have'nt had a bike in a few yrs and thought it was about time i did.

Im in Upper Hutt and got a permit to ride Karapoti, but im keen to ride almost anywhere in well just have to find a way to get the bike there as have'nt quite got to the trailer stage yet.

If anyone is keen to get out for a spin im keen, i use to ride all the firebrakes over the hutt and wainui a few yrs ago and another great ride was around the cost at the end of wainui round to ocean beach, but now in upper hutt so its a bit further to go thses days.

Anyway just wanted to say Hi all and say if any 1 wants to go for a ride sometime i would be keen to, extreamly laid back and easy going

I would be very interested to see a way from Wainui to Ocean beach. I go to Ocean beach a bit to ride but usually have to go via featherston - takes a lot longer than I would like. I have done some investigation out there but I thought it was all private roads.

As far as Ocean beach goes, i use to take a trailer to the end of the wainui coast rd then ride down the beach to the mouth of the river, cross the river giving it heaps cause dont wanna stall in there lol and u can then ride all the way round, is a real nice ride actually.

I will have my bike all ready to go on monday so keen to get out anytime as i work from home, so my boss (me lol) says sure go for it take all the time u want haha.

Just let me know when you guys are free to get out for a ride and i will be keen almost anytime.

I do have to admit is has been a few years since i did the wainui ride, but wasnt to hard to get round past the farm houses at the end of the coast rd after u get through the river, or lift ya bike up over the stye in the fence, is lucky have a 125 nice and light lol, my 250 was way to heavy and scared the crap out of me, had a sticker on it saying need big nuts to ride this bike so mine must be the size of rice lmao.Im much more comfortable with my 125 as i use to have 1 and they still go like stink and nice and light, so can crack the throttle wide open on this 1 without having to wear nappies lol

Hopefully my bike is all sorted today so im keen for a ride, shame the weather so shit today after a ripper sunday.

Even better than having to lift your bike over the fence is going thru the front gate. The Orongorongo station allows motorbike access, cost is $20 per bike. The adventure bikes go thru several times each year. You do have to ring and organise a date so there are no clashes with mountain bike & horse events. There is the coastal track, a great hill loop and up the river. PM Paladin for the contact details.

where's Orongorongo Andy mac? i heard that the Wainui access had been stopped by the farmer who owns the land at the wainui end. There's a pretty serious "fuck off" sign on their gate if you have a look.

I've ridden round from Lake ferry when the tide is out and that's a bit of fun... gravel roads (around ocean beach) and heaps of sand, a couple rivers. But when we got to the Farm that starts in wainui there is a monster sized rock fence. looks like someone has put a lot of effort in to keeping people out

Orongorongo is the river/farm at the Wainui end. Yes they get very pissed off with trespassers & will give chase on CR250s. But access can be organised.

If you only choose to ride real legit places you wouldn't get to ride anywhere in wellington, apparently the council need to block off more for the mountain bikers and walkers.

I go 50/50 places like some remote beach sometimes.

Bit of a noob question here. Do you need an extinguisher on your bike for this type of event?

I cannot vouch for the organiser but I wouldnt think so, but it is usually a good idea anyways, even if you just carry a very small unit.

I have a very fuxxxed rear muffler to replace (lets say its rusty and very Catholic) and a heavy oil leak from the rocker cover, so i wont be riding until they are sorted.

I also heard that some or most events will not let in riders without Bike Boots? is this correct? we only ever used to wear old used mid calf Army issue clod busters, until i got some second hand MX boots that were from teh 80's.

Alas, I do not have goggles, or boots and the only helmet here is an open face with a clip on peak (yeaaa man!) so it wont be hard to miss me, I will be the guy no body wants to be seen with, lol:sweatdrop

Keen to come watch the event tho, might get out on the MTB for a ride, how far up Moonshine is it?

Middleton Cup up for grabs for Club members. Can join on the day.
Trophies to third for intermediate, open and vets.

What size foot are you? I have some old boots I could do ya cheap if they fit..... Probably have a helmet too depending on size. Might save ya a bit and keep ya safe till ya get some good gear.

Moonshine track is run by the KMMC. Have to ride on the organised club days etc etc. Best to give them a call if keen, number will be online somewhere if you google Kapi Mana Motorcycle Club.

Top of Brooklyn hill at the windmill carpark this Friday arvo if your keen on a ride. Going up to ride the MX track up there with a few mates and your welcome to tag along. $20 per bike, MX track and some trail riding too. We'll probably arrive about 5 and ride for a few hours (with numerous stops to talk, eat, drink etc obviously). Can get me on 0274285176 if need be. James

Speaking of that...... Bit of a tale to tell.....

Last monday I got a message from Pornstar about going for a ride, I said yes and that was the start of it!

Exhausted from riding Sat and Sun I rushed through getting the bike ready and out to Karapoti, we unloaded and Pornstar suggested link track then rollercoaster then home. I looked at a bald rear tire and sceptically agreed. Bad move number one on my part.

We headed off up the gorge and I was just starting to wake up and feel good on the bike when oh fuck, oh fuck he hasn't even seen me, oh fuck he's not braking and I'm braking so hard I'm on the front wheel and can't turn, oh fuck that hurt! Result was oncoming rider looking a bit shady and having his radiator and shroud pulled backwards and me having a sore hand and a bent front disc.

After a bit of straightening we headed on. Bad move number two on my part. After riding like a muppet along the main tracks I eventually found Pornstar at the start to the link track and we headed in. My bent front disc continued to make braking a real problem and slideouts constant and it wasn't long before I realised my hand wasn't getting better infact it was getting worse!

By the summit it was decided that we would finish the track then head back the easy way. Pain, pain and more pain all the way back but we made it. An eventful little ride albeit probably quite a boring one for Pornstar. Round two once I'm recovered is at a mx track ay mate?

Taking this weekend off to rest my hand hasn't been much fun but with any luck I'll be sweet for next weekend!

Moral of the story, Karapoti deserves respect and shouldn't be riden tired, with bald tires or after a crash. Oh that and I need to get one of those fancy KTM things for tight bush tracks, Pornstar and his shiny bike made things look effortless and he wouldn't stop bragging about the hydroulic clutch... Bastard!

Totally aggree about respect karapoti, way i see it is if you see cars or trailers in the carpark take even more care than normal but always assume someone coming the other way.When Kezza and i went out was my first time to Karapoti so i was pretty slow and cautious on the way in to the orange hutt and then kezza took me on an interesting way home up this huge ass hill they had cut a track in, what a blast to say the least lol, feeling a bit more confident on the ride home i started to open the throttle alot more and i had a blast on the uphill parts all the way back, was a great ride for us cause we didnt see anyone on the track just a young blonde in one of the rivers lol.

Hope your feeling better red and not to sore still, i felt your pain just by reading your post and i was thinking about pain everytime i saw a hairy part of Karapoti (almost all the way lol)
In any case Karapoti is a hell of alot of fun and i was a bit of a Nanna on the downhill sections but i got back to the carpark in 1 piece lol


Need to get out again real soon was alot of fun riding with kezza so hopefully we can catch up with you and pornstar for a ride sometime

Well its safe to say the lads had an excellent... adventure/ride yesterday, It was Kezzas idea to take the mountain bike vine track that litarally turned into just bush after riding down a narrow creek for a whiles, the 450 boys were not fully happy, then after finding our way down to a river we followed that for a K or 2 until we found the way into the forest, a bit of earthwork was needed to prep the scoured out bank, Dave and Darryls moral support from atop their bikes was invaluable, then onto some more open tracks and a long uphill drag (450 boys much happier now)that got up to 100k resulting in my little orange bike melting half my indicator of from the exhuast. then an old enduro loop/one long rut(the cut out tree ledge was primo) then some more fast stuff that resulted it snake bites to the rear tube, so pulled into orange hut for a quick patch job. after that it was staircase/ rock garden then home with a flat front.
All in all Primo day.(oh yeah, then of ta work)

Awesome Pornstar i used to go up sumit rd in the hutt and was a blast up the breaks, id ride up towards silverstream or over wainui way. Always keen to go for a ride up there u can really crack it open up those hills.

Yeah agreed, the morning was better than the afternoon but the whole lot was a bit boring by the end. You can only do so many wheelies before flat paddocks get boring.

Track went up a rise and curved to the right. I gave it some stick went straight ahead up the steep bit and jumped off the top, turns out there was a reason you were meant to turn right.......... Landed in the pond and although luckily my bike landed on a plastic drain pipe which stopped it from going under and drowning (albeit bending my rear subframe), I landed in the water. Riding home with wet feet was no fun!

rathkeale was considerably gay actually. Just another farm ride, i recon they should have to meet a standard of eligability for rides... i.e. they can't charge you to go through 20,000 farm gates and cross the highway 4 times if all you get in between that is sheep ruts and dust. Still had a blast and managed to fuck myself up so twas good fun... life is what you make it

Where's the entrance? i know alot of entrance points in the naenae area but not up this way.Went for a ride at Karapoti on sunday with a friend of mine thats got a 700cc raptor dam beast of a thing lol, prick waited in a mud pool for me then let rip and showered me in mud lmao (paybax a bitch lol) was a ton of bikes on the track and heaps of 4 wheel drives but luckily for us they were all on the side of the track when we went in and on the way back.Been ages since i have been up the breaks but use to be a hell of alot of fun so looking forward to it, just let me know what day and time.Will PM ya ma cell and kezza has it as well.

I cannot vouch for the organiser but I wouldnt think so, but it is usually a good idea anyways, even if you just carry a very small unit.

I have a very fuxxxed rear muffler to replace (lets say its rusty and very Catholic) and a heavy oil leak from the rocker cover, so i wont be riding until they are sorted.

I also heard that some or most events will not let in riders without Bike Boots? is this correct? we only ever used to wear old used mid calf Army issue clod busters, until i got some second hand MX boots that were from teh 80's.

Alas, I do not have goggles, or boots and the only helmet here is an open face with a clip on peak (yeaaa man!) so it wont be hard to miss me, I will be the guy no body wants to be seen with, lol:sweatdrop

Keen to come watch the event tho, might get out on the MTB for a ride, how far up Moonshine is it?

Haha I was actually surprised at what was possible on the ole girl. Once I got used to the couch like suspension it was easy enough to jump everything on the track on it, albeit probably not with much grace!

I don't recommend the Brooklyn track when the wind is up - if you jump on the mx track you can get blown off course in mid-air or can get blown off ya bike at some of the more exposed sections. Sounds stupid but it happened to two of us in 80+ kmh winds nearby, on the track from Terawhiti to Oteranga Bay.
Call them on 0274427334 to see if they're open on the day, I think that they close on wet days?

I was exercising the road bike this weekend. What places was your mate aware of? Karapoti is hard work for a newbie (like me) and harder still if you underestimate it and run out of gas like I have done or turn down some of the more feral tracks. However there are always plenty of people at karapoti and it's rare to go there and not see someone else, particularly on a fine day like yesterday. AFAIK Firebreaks are less used per expanse.

Red Rocks - the gate is closed on Sunday.
Brooklyn is a pay to use track and they get your details for the accident liability waiver etc.
Others here could tell you more than I could probably.

I was out Mungatuks yesterday (Other end of Karapoti) i saw one rider on his own think it was a later model Yamaha though (White plastic's kit) do you know the model of the bike? eg: KX250 or something just so i can try and remember seeing/ hearing a 2 stroke pass me or 4 stroke . ( Cause i would notice if it was a 2 stroke or 4 stroke ) Also wasnt there a big ride up in Foxton yesterday ? Do you think he would of gone to that ?

Also how does he get places ? Does he have a car and trailer ? If so can you give description of his car/ute or something.... so i can remember if i saw it or not

You know where the Brooklyn Windmill is? If not, it's off Ashton Fitchett Drive (I think thats what it's called). Head to the Windmill then just past it will be a large steel gate. Ring the number on the board next to the gate and they will open the gate for you. Keep heading down till you see a sign about the MX track, follow that right and down the hill some more. Then you'll come up and go past the Slipway drift track, keep going further still and eventually you'll get to the house where ya pay and sign the waiver. Then the track is just up the hill from there.

Would be keen for a jam but I'm still nursing a nastily broken hand. This weekend will only be 3 weeks and I promised myself I'd wait 4 at least.... Not to mention it's still swollen and multi coloured :sick:

just for info. Kapi Mana motorcycle club have practice nights every wednesday (except the wednesday before club days). runs from 4.30 to about 7pm at $20 per rider. Its good to have a blat round the track and also check out what the club is all about and meet members. go to the site as you need to text the track guy as there are limited numbers allowed due to council requirements. www.kmmc.co.nz
