ACC LEVY HIKES -THINK AGAIN NICK SMITH!
Sunday Breakfast/Brunch anyone?
Where: Mission Bay
When: Sunday November 22
Time: 8:00am onwards
Register your attendance here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=2266&day=2009-11-22)
Fancy a coffee and a bite to eat, while keeping this ACC issue in the public face? Join us for coffee and breakfast at Mission Bay. Get in early and find yourself a carpark. Yes folks a carpark. Make sure you have change for the parking fees if any. One bike per park please. Then take a leisurely stroll to the nearest cafe and get a coffee and something to eat. Take your time, relax, enjoy your brunch.
Please find a park on the street front first, followed by the carpark opposite the Fish Pot Cafe, then moving down to the other one as numbers build. We will be assembling around the fountain to make a bit of noise, this will kick off at 8:30am. After the rebel rousing we will then be free to go and enjoy our brunch.
If we do it right, there wont be any parking for cars available, highlighting the fact that if these bastards tax us off the roads, we will be forced to "drive" a car, and there will be no parking available anywhere. We also will be supporting the local businesses so they are not disadvantaged because of this protest action.
At all times this will be a peaceful gathering, we are not out to upset anyone, we just want to make a point. Please ensure you do support the businesses after we have made our point. Talk to people about why we are so angry.
Bring your noise makers, this one is going to be LOUD!
Hand out leaflets to the general public letting them know we are fighting this fight for all of us, dont forget WHOS NEXT?
A few rousing rounds of our battle cry from time to time would not go amiss either.

Good plan!
But can we get it defined a bit more please?
If the turnout is to be small-ish do we need to make one area our own (so to speak)?
Like the waterfront, or Ponsonby road?
Not much of a city type myself, so where are the parking places we can make the biggest impact.
And I take it we get in the CBD early to score the parks and hold onto them for the 9am flurry of 'shoppers'?

I dont live in the city, so I can not answer those questions, no doubt someone down that way can. But yes, get in early and take up the car parks. The Auckland CBD would be my first pic though, bigger exposure.

Or outside National MPs electorate offices where they have parking outside and are 'In' on Saturday morning. A little less likely to just annoy the general public then.

From "the peoples" perspective, they have probably read the headlines and feel as though the Govt has already about-turned, so in doing this you risk really pissing off the population.
It was a canny move, actually. The Govt has effectively reduced our scope to cause further protest until more definitive decisions are taken.
Having said that, I'd be there if I could. :-)

Hardly a visible protest though if a bunch of bikers park up in an empty carpark on a Sunday morning, nowhere to have brekkie either.
I am not that much bothered about annoying anyone except for the businesses that might potentially lose income if cars cant get in there. Look there is any amount of parking buildings in the city. The bloody cars can go and park there and walk a bit further than they would normally do. It is bikes taking up the spaces that is making the statement.
I can't make this on Saturday, I have already arranged to have coffee with several of my female biker friends at various places around the town :blip:

Lets give them something to see!

What time Mom?? I may be able to put in an appearance (ladies, control yourselves)....
Mission Bay might be the go too - if we can clog the entire carpark by the beach and Tamaki Drive too. The shop owners might be keen to sell us brekkie too - make a change from the healthy joggers all along there.

I think mission bay would be a good Idea, all the main parking is visible from the shops and beach, its a very popular area on a weekend so If we get there early it's gonna cause alot of attention when people have nowhere to park that's close to the shops.

Well now, I have just got off the phone from Radio NZ. They are going to send a reporter to cover the event live :D
Now we really need to get our act together and make some plans. I hear you about Mission Bay, that is a pig of a place for cars at the best of times. We would need a big turn out though to make it effective. Imagine all the parking taken up by bikes :shifty:
We MUST spend some money while we are there though, I dont want to take money out of pockets.

Definatly, Mission bay is full of yum food, even a few bars. I'll have to borrow a bike for the mission bay one but I'd definatly be keen.
It wouldn't have to be thaaaat many bikes just enough to line tamaki drive in mission bay and take up most of the coveted carpark across of the shops.
EDIT: of course if we get hundreds of bikes that'd be most excellent

Good luck with it and yeah, good comment about spending money there. Don't forget the placards explaining this is what it'll be like when you all have to take your cars because you can't afford your bikes. Handouts explaining how ACC's figures are flawed would be great too.
Be good to see this done in other centres too.

Maybe being inner city, this a chance for more scooters to get involved, cos theres nothing worse than spying a carpark and pulling up to see a wee scoot there he he! A lot of people I've talked to, do not realise the increase involves scooters too

The best one to hit would be the Harbor parking at the maritime museum. Huge visibility to tourists and puts you smack bang in the city.

How about Mission bay on Saturday and Ponsonby on Sunday?. It would be good to do it over two days so those that can't make one day can make the other. The main problem with downtown Auckland and Queen St is the council has already made almost all the parking 5 mins or taxi stands so people have to park in buildings which is not that visible.

The city (CBD) is just too spread out, nowhere for a lot of bikes to get together to put on a show. Most CBD parks VERY time limited and enforced.
Mission Bay car park, by the big fountain would be perfect.
Think all the cafes open at about 7.30 (ish).

Mission bay is not 10min from the CBD if you 100 bikes. Its also a pain to get to unless you ride Tamiki drive, and thats a rolling protest not a parking one :)

Its right in the middle of all the motorway access points to get to. And if its raining mission bay will be like a morgue. Where as The viaduct will still be alive.

Thats my point, to get to mission bay with a decent number of bikes will close down Tamiki Dr. So it becomes a rideing protest, not your intended parking one :)

Since these levy proposals have been announced there are many of us that have not had a weekend to ourselves, sometimes entire days have been given up too. And yes this will all settle in the fullness of time, I just dont want to lose the media support we have right now in the wake of Bikeoi. So for now, this Sunday is it, that is as far as I can plan right now. Hells teeth, my poor hubby does not even know I have done this yet :D And what is worse, if the Blue Bitch does not start again on Sunday, he will have to pillion me too

I meant at "least" a few weeks away of that very reason. I have been on three so far and some time at home would be nice for the kids.
Do we know the date ACC's official proposal goes to parliamentary committee to be discussed ?
That should be a big date for at least some more visible protests.
Perhaps our friendly politicians can give us that date.

Why not link this type of protest to a synchronised series of similar protests nationwide? Each city or region can nominate a venue that will work for them and we hit them all simultaneously, week after week. Perhaps different venue in each area each week so as not to victimise the same retailers repeatedly.
We have the communication network up and running to do it, based on our successes so far. How about it? :2guns:

It'll still take up a park though!
Reading the comments above it doesn't really matter where the action is as long as it gets coverage!!
Secondly this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=112791) Idea for our next one.
We need to combine on one protest so we are not doing separate things all at once, that will only divide us. I don't know if bronze wants to be invovled in disruptive action but someone needs to co ordinate!

ok ok ok ... I'm here.... - but am pretty busy today! Geeez you work fast...
I can do flyers - and I can distribute to some of the auck cbd bike parks (best seemed to be victoria, civic and downtown which I can do unless others are closer) - we need different flyers for the day though.
The overwhelming reaction from members of the public as far as I heard so far is "you won didn't you?" - we need flyers for the public that says how yesterday didn't mean any "U-turn" at all and why..
We also need anti-propaganda about how the biker issue is being used to hide the hikes for all... and how we're working to help. Anyone collect any of the anti-national propaganda yesterday? this may help.
Also some of the stats from charley lamb (available on bikersagainstacc) - happy to design (and print to some extents - though might eventually need to ask for withdrawal from the war-chest for resources) the flyer tonight.
Can't do much @ work today though...
Mom - email me @ work if you need anything 2day

This Sunday Mission Bay - count me in - agree this needs lots of publicity (TV, placards, leaflets etc) on the day otherwise pissed off cagers won't figure out that ACC levies will make traffic and parking congestion worse :mega:
ps Mission Bay cafe (directly across the road from the main carpark entrance) has the best coffee :niceone:
pss there are no parking meters except in the private offstreet carparks

I am not familiar with what the on street parking is there, there may be meters. I have no idea how much the charges are though. Coins should cover it though. No doubt some one will be able to tell us soon.

Just re-read it thx - so the protest is pretty spread out over all carparks in Mission Bay - on street and off street - would have suggested all bikes to converge on the main offstreet carpark for more visible statement - anyway, there are no parking meters on street or off street (except in two small privately owned carparks).

Hey mom,
Mission Bay is an excellent idea - I have tried to put together something similar in the CBD for the past two weeks with limited turnout (poor organisation to blame I am afraid) and the weather and everyone's commitment to Tuesday's Bikoi probably didn't help but hopefully everyone is now stirred up for a bit of breakfast on Sunday - I will be there for sure!
It would be great to involve the scooter clubs and the like as Mission Bay is accessible to those on 50cc and there are plenty of those in the city!
Also, if you are thinking of hitting the CBD the week after, there is not much legit parking in Queen Street and almost the only place open that early is Burger King - there is, however, a ton of parking up Shortland Street, Wyndham Street, High Street and Fort Street around that time.
Cheers!

90% of parking is free, even on street, the main carpark across from the shops and both sides of the main road is also free all day. The only pay and display parks are out of sight and privately owned so we don't need to worry :D
Kiwi Graham
18th November 2009, 14:28
Just to clarify both the sea front car parks in Mission Bay are free to park in.
On street parking is also free.
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Mission+Bay&sll=-41.244772,-177.714844&sspn=28.735221,56.337891&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Mission+Bay&ll=-36.848041,174.831276&spn=0.003743,0.006877&t=h&z=17 drag image down a little.
Suggest meeting point be the car park indicated by 'the fish pot cafe'. The other car park is indicated by 'mission bay'
The car parks of Patteson Ave are pay and display but by presenting the bottom of your ticket to buisnesses you get the price knocked of your bill.
I suggest we fill the sea front car parks first, then the road and then the pay and display ones (if enough attend of course)
I belive the sea front car parks have approx 80 odd spaces between them.

have a look a my response - I'm not sure the CBD on a Sunday is a great target - it's pretty empty, especially early in the morning...
Mission bay has its advantages though - if nothing else then it should provide a good photo op.
Our biggest hurdle here is that the public think we've already won.
We really need our own propaganda to circulate to say why this isn't so.
I'm thinking a set of FAQs - need help with the answers and more questions... not really got time till much later tonight to construct eloquent answers (or more questions) help me out guys...
Q. Haven't the bikers already won this argument - I though the government backed down?
A. (the truth about the fact that the gummint's position hasn't actually changed)
Q. Bikers should pay their way - why am I subsidising you?
A(. Usual arguments?)
Q. Why are you taking up car parks, can't you keep all the bikes together
A. (demonstrating affect of bikers using their cars etc)
Q. Why hurt local businesses taking away car spaces
A. (We're not - we're actually helping by buying stuff)
Q. This doesn't affect me
A. (Increasing levies across the board, privatisation, who's next etc)
Q. How can I help?
A. (Maybe wishful thinking! - but maybe link for donations etc)
More/better questions
Also there will need to be two flyers - we need a biker one (to advertise) and a public one to hand out on the day. CalNZ's flyer was waaaaaaaaaaaay to wordy to be read before it was binned.

I'm thinking when we get there, 1 bike per park in the carparks, then each bike on the road parked parallel and leaving 1-1.5 bike lengths between them. (just enough so an average car can't get through, smart cars don't count as average :bleh:)
EDIT: by Smart car I dont mean inteligent I mean the tiny cars that are the same size as a bike haha

Hi PhantasmNZ,
Yes that would be me. Must say I agree with your thoughts re: CBD - am glad to see someone who clearly has a far better idea on these things is putting together this event (Mission Bay) - looking forward to a bite and coffee on Sunday with (hopefully) a good turn our of bikers.
Also, Chasio mentions "I got the flyer in a carpark off Durham Street on Friday. The buggers had been aroud and put them on top of the only official flyers allowed that day (i.e. for Maha's ride) that I had put out earlier" in the thread. I do apologise if that was the case - I specifically placed my flyers under the official ride flyers to ensure they were most visible, so unless it was moved after that time, it should have been at the bottom...

I think we need to state clearly on it its a demonstration of how many more cars will be on the road if this proposal goes through and be given to every car that drives into the car park looking for a space. At least that way they will understand what we are doing.
They dont need to be huge 4 per A4 would be fine unless we want to say more then 2 per A4 perhaps

Just a thought - how about not pitching this primarily as a "protest" as such - but more of a "meeting" to discuss the issues - that way the regularity it justified, and there is a feedback loop - we could use this to gather the thoughts of other bikers who might not be part of the kb community.
As for scooters, there are about 25 million (slight exaggeration, but hey this is all about dodgy numbers) around the CBD - we'll just make the flyer scooter-inclusive (like "no motorway riding involved - bring yer moped!")

Annie! if you haven't posted this on the BFTP site you'd better, I know many if not all of the guys and girls would do their best to come, count me and the wife, KB aka Ratbag, on her own bike, as in.
Mission bay is an awesome idea darling, plenty of waterfront, not a lot of parking, it'll be a hoot.
C u at 7.30 ish, gotta be in quick if ya wanna park folks.
Dodygiti,Inner city, too big bro, this is fantastic, will hit where it hurts.
Pissing off the general piublic? how?, exercising our right to utilise a park is not an offence and if we're asked why, we can quite legitimatly say, it's part of what they( the general public) need to get used too)What was a car park with three or four bikes parked in it, is now going to be taken up by our individual Cages, lets see if that idea enthuses them any more, than the govt trying to tax us! of the road.
Please be quite clear, I'm hoping many of the public do get a tad annoyed and as I'm certain they will, they'll ask WHY? That people is when we explain it to them in simple terms, it's us and 0ur usual courteous parking on the bikes ( no increases in ACC Levies) or it's our cars taking up the spaces they currently use because we use our gas miserly, road not damaging, far less polluting motorcycles!
Win win, we have breeky, we get to talk to lots of members of the public and they get to see where we are coming from, first hand.
Then, it gets better, They ( from Mission bay, Remmers, St Heliers etc) go to their local MP's and give em shit!
Tell them, get this sorted out or else we pull our donations and our support.
Great idea Mom, I'm with you all the bloody way.

If you want to annoy the businesses, have everyone pack a picnic rather than buying their food and beverages.
Mission Bay is good. The spill over could go to St Helliers (local Nat MP office in an apartment one street back from the main road (Polygon Rd) so local businesses don't have far to go to whine at their MP
Parnel Rd is a prime target as there really aren't many parking places on adjacent roads. Ponsonby Rd is better as far as impact on business for a lunch/dinner run (tons of restaurants) Though a bit more adjacent parking and not so many picnic spots

If you want to annoy the businesses, have everyone pack a picnic rather than buying their food and beverages.
Hey, lets get this really clear. I DO NOT want to annoy the businesses! No way - no how. If we take up the carparks, and take the cage trade away, we HAVE to go and support them.

Annie! if you haven't posted this on the BFTP site you'd better, I know many if not all of the guys and girls would do their best to come, count me and the wife, KB aka Ratbag, on her own bike, as in.
Would be nice to have a few KISS placards for the public to reflect on (stimulate righteous paranoia). Perhaps some simple but revealing statistical equation based on their figures that don't add up?.
Make much ado about the fact that ACC has an 11 billion$ reserve... I really liked that 'he's no trout' Professor's explanation of how they propose to fatten and re-brand the ACC as an 'ACC Insurance' cash cow with a 24 billion dollar reserve and govt guaranteed income stream, for sale to the highest bidders.
Make a big deal about how everybody's earner premium is going to increase along with other selected risk groups as well. That'll piss the public off (pissed with the govt).
What an underhanded way to raise funds and enslave the taxpayer eh? Wouldn't it be more honest to just go and borrow the hundreds of billion$ they want and enslave the taxpayer in the usual open and transparent manner as has historically been the case?

My bad! I read "I am not that much bothered about annoying anyone except for the businesses" as meaning that you weren't motivated to annoy anyone except for the businesses.
That aside. Are the Parnell Rd and Ponsonby Rd suggestions not suitable to meet your needs for additional venues?

If you want to annoy the businesses, have everyone pack a picnic rather than buying their food and beverages.
Mission Bay is good. The spill over could go to St Helliers (local Nat MP office in an apartment one street back from the main road (Polygon Rd) so local businesses don't have far to go to whine at their MP
Parnel Rd is a prime target as there really aren't many parking places on adjacent roads. Ponsonby Rd is better as far as impact on business for a lunch/dinner run (tons of restaurants) Though a bit more adjacent parking and not so many picnic spots
Yep, John Key lives in Parnell - hopefully his neighbours can give him the message :chase:

Just a thought - how about not pitching this primarily as a "protest" as such - but more of a "meeting" to discuss the issues - that way the regularity it justified, and there is a feedback loop - we could use this to gather the thoughts of other bikers who might not be part of the kb community.
As for scooters, there are about 25 million (slight exaggeration, but hey this is all about dodgy numbers) around the CBD - we'll just make the flyer scooter-inclusive (like "no motorway riding involved - bring yer moped!")
I want this to be a protest, but will be driving a clear message to Joe Public about what is going on here. This poxy government are using some fairly transparent tactics to quietly screw the population while they are diverted by a bunch of noisey bikers. Educating the wider population is paramount, I hope as they realise what is going on they join us in letting Minister Myth know that he can not, and will not be allowed to privatise ACC, turn it into an insurance scheme and sell it off!
Using the Kiss pricipal here and saving on paper :innocent:
Any good?
Great for actually putting on car windscreens at the protest venue, can you do a few?

Yep already printed 40 sheets = 80 flyers, will 'guillotine' them and bring along. Cant really print any more or the photocopyer police will get me so if any one else can print some that would be great.
That was my thoughts, to stick on windscreens and give to drivers cruising around attempting to find a parking space. It lets them know whats going on.

I used to live in mission bay, and if you want to claim all the parks you really need to get there before 8, 7 if possible.
Reason being is all the sports freaks are parked at the bay at 8am. Cos i used to lose my park outside the house then if I shot off for 10 minutes :bash:.

If I can scrape the kids outer bed I will come.. if one child... on bikes... if more than one in car, and will park with helmets showing in car.... if this is ok.... space is space right!
I reckon this is a great idea !
As long as Joe Public can clearly identify that the car is the bike we can no longer afford. Maybe a modified version of the "target" poster in the back window...
"Sorry I nicked your park... if I could afford to register my motorcycle, you wouldn't even know I was here" kinda thing.
Plus, instead of taking a pillion, your normal passenger can double numbers by taking the postered-up car.

But will this thing backfire and undo some of the good work done by the bikeoi? From what I have seen and heard, most people support the stand that has been taken by the motorcycle community against ACC and the proposed increases. However, if we start screwing with Joe Public's day to day activities, most will just get pissed off and we risk losing their support.
Everyone has the right to park there on their bikes and I'm not suggesting that it shouldn't be done, but I don't see this being an overwhealming PR success. It would be a shame to have someone get stroppy about this in front of a TV camera and have bikers look like dicks because of the spin the media will undoubtedly put on it.
I hope I am wrong (it is 1.30am so I probably am) See you all on Sunday!

What I am hoping to achieve on Sunday is to actually educate Joe Public about wht is going on under their noses while the government have got this wonderful angry biker smoke screen in place.

Interestingly, the press for this one seems a bit more positive than the one to stop people parking at Westgate Malls http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10610482.

You know I think that we may be missing the point - The fundamental problem here is the people that we have allowed to manage the country for us. This Government (much like the last) is hellbent on pushing through their ideologically driven will with no regard to those who pay their wages and employ them to keep the roads in good repair. Now they want to charge us extra to support their own agenda eg. subsidise trucking so they can have rail in private ownership, subsidise sports so they can have kudos of world cups. Not to mention privatisation of ACC against (I think) the will of most of NZ's. Our "employees" want to tell us how to raise our kids and then pay organisations like barnardos to tell us how were all bastards for giving our kids a clip round the ear. Pour millions into their own organisations like CYPS to look after little shits who didn't get a clip around the ear at the right time (I know I used to look after them). Tell us we're just thick and ignore us because we want crims off the streets longer. What about when we said we didn't think we should have more MPs in parliament per head of population compared to the rest of the civilized world - NOTHING HAPPENED!!!!!
I reckon we should be behind the democracy march tommorrow as well as it affects us also...
When Nick Smith announces that "We have listened to the voice of the people and are only going to put rego's up to $500" You will know you have been shafted. And when it goes up another $100 next year and $100 the year after you can know that this was the thin end!
I'll say it again perhaps Guy Fawkes was quite a clear thinker!

This is the thin edge of the wedge make no mistake about it. Why do you suppose there are so many of us still out here doing this? We understand what is going on. We now have to make sure other people also understand.

Anne,
I have this really vague recollection from reading through one of the "bike parking in Wellington" threads, that someone claimed Wellington had a by-law which prohibited parking bikes in car parks.
I have no idea if Auckland has something similar, but Les might know.
If Auckland DOES have such a by-law, it might be an idea to have some planned response in the event that the parking Nazis (or other authorities) were to get involved.

Good thinking.
There's nothing here: http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/auckland/transport/parking/motorcycle.asp
about bikes being prohibited, at all.
EDIT: I worry about the Westfield thing though - Westfield malls are private property. You'd only need on "Mr Plastic Badge" security guard to try to move a bike himself to start a riot.

YEs well, getting in the news for the WRONG reasons is not necessarily the best way to get support, all you will do is piss off all other road users and give everyone including the government and the general public more reason to sting the motorcyclists..... I dont agree with your approach, all you will do is damage our reputation and give the media more ammunition. Grow up.
IF you look at the rolling protest road from Dairy Flat - they have the right approach - "we are NOT deliberately setting out to inconvenience the motoring public of Auckland. This is about making our presence felt and a chance to express our angst about this psycho levy proposal"
That is how we should approach this, we need as many people including the public on our side as possible.

They do provide bike parks ... they also have negotiated with parking buildings for additional parks through the city due to the number of bikes now used during the week.
Doesn't matter that people think it is stupid .. they have to balance the on-street timed parking for others than motocyclists and it seems to work in their favour when it comes to protests like this one.

The Bikeoi and the Mission bay protest both seem to have been very well received in the press - I dont see any issue with them at all.
Further - attending on Sunday will be my first protest action ever. (ohhh Im such a rebel).
Having said that - the Westfield thing I dont believe is as well thought out - and I dont think even the number of bikers needed will attend.
IF they did however - despite it being a public park - you cannot discriminate on someone's transport and as long as people were in there shopping???
Pfft - Personally - I think having groups of riders circling the block of Smiths home 24 x 7 (louder pipes the better) pissing him and his neighbours off would have more impact.
Anyway - hope to see 100's of you in Mission Bay Sunday.

I think it is past time to really state clearly what the intention of this protest is. This is a PASSIVE protest. As the organiser I want to reiterate to everyone that we are going to Mission Bay for Brunch. The intention is to support the businesses in Mission Bay that could potentially be affected if we simply went there to blockade the parking. We are also going to demonstrate what will happen should we be taxed off the roads. We will be forced into cars, there is already too much congestion on the roads. Adding another 100,000 more cars to the roads is hardly going to help that.
We will no doubt have a few things to say as well, so there will be speeches. There will also be a lot of noise.

Some great ideas on non-disruptive protest going round. We need to learn from truckers and not piss people off or they won't listen. And in this instance they will fight on our side - for their own interest - because they are getting screwed too - once they know that.
There is more than enough reason for the public to join us in our protest, on their own behalf.
IF we don't give them reason to just keep thinking about us, for good or ill.
Stop allowing us to be the decoy.
Point out that we have been, and that we are now looking at how it is affecting our (and their) car levies and work levies.
That we don't want our family silver built up just to be sold on/privatised. That ACC is making a profit and has plenty in the bank. That higher levies are NOT inevitable, they ARE unnecessary.
That treatment should continue to be available, and it is rorts that need to be cleaned up, not treatments withdrawn or made more inaccessible and complicated, increasing costs while reducing service.
The BIKOI 09 protest was probably the most peaceful large protest Parliament has ever seen. Zero accidents, zero arrests. Impressive for any gathering that size. People saying bullsh*t to a use of figures that would make 'lies, damn lies and statistics' blush was both understandable and I suspect more polite than your average response in a Parliamentary session.
As the media picked up, you cannot expect people who are informed to silently accept the Minister's selective use of accident figures - he was conveniently overlooking that the number of motorcycles has nearly doubled over ten years and the increase in total accidents is minimal, the decrease per vehicle substantial.
The Minister had that point discussed in the meeting and choose to again selectively just say from a particular year (a year when motorcycles were down to about their lowest level of use) accidents had increased - had he used a year in the 1970s or 1980s he could have said how impressed he was with the decrease in accidents instead!
More impressive, one must assume many of the nearly doubled number of motorcycles on the road are either less experienced or returning riders - if we increase training and education for ALL road users, including stopping the "I didn't see you (because I didn't look)" incidents that happen too often causing injury to motorcycles, bicyclists, pedestrians and other cars, we can decrease demands on our ACC system, and more importantly save people suffering trauma.
It is hard to convince those who look at the figures that ACC is unsustainable. Saying it does not make it so.
Yours and my car levies will have increased an average of about 50% a year over three years, plus whatever increase they settle on for my motorcycle.
Our work levies will increase hundreds of dollars a year, silently siphoned from our pay.
Why?
To add to the surplus ACC is taking in EVERY year - last year it took in $4.1b in levies and paid out only $3.1billion in claims and its own running costs. That's a billion dollars spare to bank. Would that you or I had that sort of problem!!
To add to the $11billion ACC has in the bank/investments. Do any of us agree with the guesstimates that say it is in deficit because of actuarial smoke and mirrors? Having 3x what you spend each year as reserves is a pretty solid position. Especially if you invest in injury prevention to reduce future costs.
Why would you need to build up the family silver in the bank, and come up with estimates that pretend to a deficit? Is it intended to sell the ACC silver at a discount?
Policy 101 - what impacts will these proposals have on other areas?
1. Preventing people from accessing effective treatment slows recovery and return as far as possible to productive, healthy lives (and often in the long term costs more for treatment). This costs people, and the economy.
2. How much does it cost (or save per year if you can delay the need for it) for roading measures to increase congestion? On this measure alone, the proposed ACC changes will cost the Government and taxpayer far more than they would take in.
3. This also doesn't allow for the likely effect that fewer vehicles will be registered - people with classic bikes will trailer them places rather than pay a year's levy to go to one or two collectors meets! People with more vehicles are likely to give up owning/registering many in disgust at paying such high costs when they can only be in or on one vehicle at a time.
I currently pay 2.5 times a car levy, as like the majority of motorcyclists I have a car and a motorcycle (many have more, but let's not confuse things here). Yet ACC have the gall to use my levy money to take out full page newspaper ads trying to say I'm not paying my way!!!
The ACC ad suggests that owners of bigger or expensive cars should start looking over their shoulder too... if we can pay more for ACC on a bigger bike because some of them cost that much to insure ($750 for a $15,000 motorcycle according to ACC) then what will they look to cars to pay in time?
We should:
- return ACC to "pay as you go" with a maximum of around three times annual operating costs in reserves as a buffer.
- ensure people can continue to access treatment to return to healthy and productive lives.
- clean up any rorts, but don't break the system and stop these enormous increases in our levies.
- classify and charge all private motor vehicles the same - motorcyclists typically pay at least twice anyway as almost all have cars and they can't use both vehicles at once!

I think the Wellington rallye was brilliant but I can't see how we will win any support by pissing Mission Bay users off. I don't see this as particularly productive nor as a means of advancing the cause. I don't live in Auckland so won't be attending, if I did I would likely show up in solidarity but I think this type of protest is still not going to do us any favors, and having the media there is likely to to publicize this thing negatively. I'm drawing some fine distinctions here, but I see a difference between the Mission bay thing and the Westfield one.
The Westfield demo has no purpose (as far as I know) other than to inconvenience the public.
The Mission bay demo ties into the "if bikes are forced off the road, it will affect you, the public".
I do suggest lots of signs explaining why bikes are taking up parking places instead of parking out the way as usual.
And the reality is that MB has plenty of parking, at worst the inconvenience will be that people will have to park further back and walk a way (which they might have had to do anyway).
The last BRONZ committee meeting discussed this at some length.
Essentially they decided to endorse activity where disruption was incidental to the purpose of the demonstration, but not where disruption was the actual purpose. f'instance we certainly disrupted Wellington traffic with the BIKEOI! - a traffic jam 25 kilometres long, but it was incidental to what we were doing, not the purpose of it.
