I know so you have to get up to 3rd gear just to go 50kph:lol::lol::rofl:

What GN have you been riding? Must've been seriously stuffed! 2nd does 50 no probs, 60-70 even, 3rd gets me almost to 100 and 4th is good for 110, and then 5th is overdrive for cruising/saving fuel.

And it still gets to 80ish faster than most cars!

Besides, if its all about who has the biggest, fastest everything then i just take my car

Sorry to dissapoint you but "most cars" can beat the gn250.
Bikes like a cbr250 can beat a fair amount of "average cars".
Remember when you say "most cars" on the road these could include subaru wrx, skyline's, cefiro's, holdens, fords, all sorts of cars with grunt.
A bike Like a 1 litre gsxr I can safely say can beat 95% of most cars.
On the motorway alot of cars cruise at 120kph then when they see a speed camera they slow down then repeat. A gn250 cant cruise at 120 my mums nissan paraire joy station wagon can.

Please sell your car and buy a inline 4 250, they are cheap (some around 3 g), farily reliable, can pass cars on open road with ease, motorway isnt hard on them. Look up some zxr's on trademe.

Haha, my car ticks all those boxes anyway... and why bother with another 250?? And my GN can cruise at 120, but everyone here only cruises at 110 anyway... i dont get overtaken on my way into town.. and like i said, thats to 80kph im talking... cos i know its got no top end

Why bother with a GN250? A proper 250 will get you prepped up for a 600.

Bullshit everyone knows, yes even a Gn250 owner, that Gn's top out at 110kph. It may look like 125kph topped out on yours but the real speed is around 110. You must seriously be a n00b If you think a gn250 can cruise at 120, let me guess in your line of thought your GN can do 180kph?:lol::lol:

Nah, i know it cant do 180kph, but 130 is certainly possible! even more on a downhill. Perhaps any GNs you may have ridden were a little sick? Mine is quite good as a learner bike in my opinion, and definitely a step in the right direction. However i do see little point in "upgrading" to another 250 when i could get a 400 or 600 straight from the get-go.

I'm not a "n00b" at all, and i do know for a fact that it is not just "indicated speed" as if it was, then how come i dont get passed continuosly? Especially following you're line of thought that "most cars cruise at 120kph".

The main thing about a 600 that would strike me as a worrying difference is not the dynamics, or the extra power. I don't imagine that being an issue at all. The biggest thing for me would be the weight difference, and with most so-called "proper" 250s weighing around the same as a GN i see no advantage from buying one.

Besides, if i want to get my thrills i'll go racing in my car, seeing as it is quite literally a "cage" :bleh:

You say "130 is certainly possible", do you know my history? Banzai set the record for 137kph I told him I would try to beat it. I made 130kph on a straight on the GN last year, Toto was behind me as tail end charlie on the waipu ride, hiflyer was infront of me. They both passed cars on a straight heading into mangawai so I followed and ringed Like hell (nearly got head on crash with a campervan). But you wouldnt know would you? Saying I havent learnt to ride it hard because you dont know me at all!!

130 is not certainly possible, it is possible given the right chance of circumstances, petrol, weight etc.

No you see you judge from what you get on the speedo, what you get on the speedo isnt correct. If you werent a n00b you would understand that. The bike didnt have issues I bought it new from colemans suzuki K road, with little K's and had a service and check before the ride. Rode on 98 octance. The speedo at the time was reading 146kph It was realistically 130kph.

I dont intend to be mean or offensive but you only have 2 freinds, this indicates you havent gone on many group rides and only have a few regular riding partners. So you are saying you arent a n00b - from your own judgement!

Hmmm something about having done a fairly advanced motorsport mechanics course at WINTEC would suggest something about my n00bness, yes?

I know that speedos are not entirely accurate, but i also know that mine is not out to that extent! As i have mentioned, i dont get passed by cars whilst travelling at 110, and you're saying im probabbly only going 95ish? Yet at the same time, in my car at a GPS verified 105kph i am getting passed by other cars. One would think this suggests that my speedo is still reasonably close to accurate. Of course this would depend on the current state of the chain, wether the sprockets were both the original size, and the current wear of the tire. But i digress. Point is, mines not out heaps and it hits over 130 without stress, when there is little wind.

Theres something about knowing the mechanics and another about actually riding it good!

Have you ever thought that cars stay back away from you? Are you on your Learners with the big L plate on the back. Generally cars give you some space, if they can tell you are (besides the L plate) un confident and lacking in skill they give you space. In a car they treat you like another road user, have you ever thought you are good at driving a car but n00b with bike?

Ouch. That hurt. So i'm not good at riding a bike now? And you can tell me this from miles away, with never ever seeing me on a bike. Nope, i ditched the L-plate and the associated licence that goes with it 2 years ago.

And i ditched the mechanics side of things too, the only reason for that was so that i knew what was happening when i did things. We focused on a lot more than just fixing engines too, like handling and how different setups affect it. Sure that was cars, but a lot of it correlates to bikes.

For example, having a single disc brake on the front of a bike with good stoppers is likely to lead to the bike steering in that direction under heavy braking. Same as having better stoppers on one side of a car, or a bad wheel alignment.

At the time of you riding the GN on the open road maybe you had a bad day where your riding wasnt great. Or maybe it was windy at the time for the car to view you un confident.

As you drive a car you know more than me that when you see a person on a 250 in a car generally you give them space you dont ride up their bums or overtake. I have, as many others do, get cars keeping distance especially when its windy.

Huh? At the time? Every day on my 30km commute into uni? On a Dual Carriageway?

Generally as a car driver i cant really tell if a bike is a little 250 or a considerably bigger bike, i give them all room but still overtake if theyre slow.

Well then sorry to say but that says you arent viewed confident on the road says the car drivers. No doudt there are times when cars follow closely behind you, and some may be pricks and tail gate you.

A 250 is easy to distinguish, granted a Hornet 250 which has a 600cc frame could be mistaken. But if its a rider with fair knowledge in the car they would know the 600cc hornets arent common in NZ usually with twin undertail pipes.

And again, you fail to convince me. Most car drivers wouldnt have a clue i'm on a 250, and they certainly dont see me as lacking confidence.. im certain of it, i do not ride in a way that suggests lack of confidence.

I am confident in my own abilities in regards to smooth consistent riding, which is enough in my opinion. Iff you appear confident, and no-one knows its an act then that works too.

I also dont find myself being tailgated whilst on the bike, but nor do i find people hanging back unnecessarily. I know i get tailgated all the time in the car, but that comes with having a "boy-racer" car.

No huffr just because you drive a "boy racer" car isnt an exception for people tailgating you. You mentioned you had qualifications in CARS, fixing them up would also require you drive the CARS. Its farily obvious you are a good car driver and therefore enjoy cars more than bikes. Putting less effort to improve on your motorcycle, and less recognition to how you actually ride all due to a simple loss of interest. Car drivers can tell the difference between a big bike and a small bike, bottom line.

So the amount of times I got asked whether my 250 was a 600 or 1000 can't be part of these statistics you're using?

Another point you make, that drivers generally give bikes a wide berth, what bullshit. You reiterate that if they have an L-plate the drivers back off even more, what bullshit.

Haven't you seen the amount of threads on here bitching on about being tailgated especially with an L-plate on.

It's funny how your entire argument is meant to be backing the idea that a GN is a bad LEARNERS bike... But... It's not.

It's even funnier that you talk about how many things go wrong with Gns... When it's your Zeal that's in at the mechanics.

Yep it's a generalisation, but coming from the facts of people completely guessing as to the size of bikes that have gone past while in a car. Plus as I said the clueless comments about my 1000cc cbr250.

Don't get your middle comment, at all, whatsoever...

You asked whether my bikes go to the mechanics... I said no.

Your other question seemed pretty rhetorical so I didn't feel a need to answer it, as it's another generalisation, maybe most bikes do go to the mechanics who knows... I know that my mates that look after their bikes don't need to take them to the shop. Once again, what is yours in for?

On another note, I never had to take my GN to the shop :2thumbsup

Your reply? You didn't have a reply. And your entire first post is bitching, which you said doesn't count for shit, so I was turning it around on you to point out the major hypocrisy.

I was also saying that it's complete bullshit that cars give bikes a fuckload of room, especially on their L-plates.

I haven't heard one piece of decent evidence to prove your initial statement implying that GN250s are shit learner bikes in this entire thread. Maybe it's because they're not.

Trudes: Im defending myself, if it were for the attention then do you think I would of heeded your advice on ignoring the thread, If you dont know: me and huffr had a debate on another thread which got moved into this. Yes the modern GNs are prone to corroding rather quickly. If ya watch it and look after it you're able to prevent that from happening.

Many, many bikes including Cbr250s have major reg/rec problems.

A tyre had nothing to do with the bike itself whatsoever, it's called getting better tyres when ya wear those out. Btw they're only really shit in the wet.

Geee whizz it must be shit bike huh!

Logic fail.

So... Are you gonna tell us why GNs are shit for a learner?

From the points you've just made (which I assume are your strongest points) the learner may:

Keep the chrome finish as dry as possible and protected even through a quick wipe with WD40.

Get a cheap reg/rec IF the stock fucks out, but to be honest I haven't even heard of GN regs busting, nothing compared to CBRs... Are CBRs shit bikes?

And buy some decent tyres when the Shinkos are done.

Does it make it a mint learner bike now?

sunhuntin

Well that was a fucked up reply...

1) So your making generalisations based on what? I would say that under 5% of car drivers who don't ride would be able to pick out 250s without seeing stickers. ?

ive had other riders with years and years of experience assume my bike is a 600+. i would imagine most car drivers would assume the same. the only thing that brands it as a 250 is the rego card.

on the flip side, i recall the 500 being mistaken as a smaller cc bike at least once. after i sold it to my old boss, we would often end up with both viragos at work, and a few riders thought that mine was the bigger cc. i know i cant just look at a bike and pick the cc rating without a closer look.

"Developing", never tested, and I rather suspect more PR than actual functioning hardware.

Insisting on spending trillions on weapons defense systems where missing even one incoming means 10s of thousands of deaths, whilst the funds diverted into programmes where toilets seats cost 1 million dollars and, lets see, 10s of thousands of people die needlessly because of poverty and untreated medical issues is a deliciously perverse irony.

The problem with military solutions to military problems is they tend to be a bit one dimensional.

I'd pick my answer over yours simply because it's almost a historical certainty that "sophisticated" US weapons systems of the last 70 years seldom fit the arena in which they are deployed, and even if they are deployed correctly, someone sold the propellant as fertiliser.

I've just jumped from a GN250 to a 650. You telling me Im not ready for it? Im glad I didnt have something like a ZXR250, I probably would have killed myself while I was still getting the hang of riding. The GN is a perfect learner bike, which I said in my review, which someone linked in this thread.

And no, Im sure Ive got my GN to around 135km/h. Mine cruises quite happily at 110-120. Like I've said before, you just dont know how to get the best out of them.

A 250 is easy to distinguish, granted a Hornet 250 which has a 600cc frame could be mistaken.

And no. If you arent a biker, its not likely that you can distinguish between the different cc ratings of bikes. I know people that can only tell the difference between cruisers and sportsbikes, anything other than that, they have no clue about. And why would a rider be in a car anyway, they should be riding.

Storytime:
So need to go to Auckland CBD today meet up with a mate, want to take my zeal oh wait thats right its getting fixed. So I ask around last minute my stepdad offers me his Gn250, my first response was hell no because I owned it about a year ago when I was yb16 and made an oath to not go on one. Last minute alright then I will have to bear with it, off we go. WHAT THE??? I open it up and nothing happens, no pull, I see the needle going up but my speedo climbing like a old man on low dose of viagra. Im in 3rd gear trying to make it to 60kph with revs very high go, go, go, get it up I say get it up!. Then I find myself in 5th gear with half revs (7rpm) cruising at 70kph, my body position is like the little kids on the plastic trikes. Oddly enough suzuki made a bike with a high seat height for a 6ft guy but handlebars, pegs, seat position for a 5ft midget. I get on the motorway, yay im free like a range cowboy oh wait whats that in the distance, no it cant be, oh bollocks standstill traffic. Alright I can work with this so I pull in to lane split the usual. WTF!!! this bike is hard to keep upright at such slow speeds the cramped position is uncomfortable and the mirrors are so big to fit through the gaps. So I made it out of the battlefeild and im struggling to keep to 100kph on near redzone, again with the old man with low dose of viagra context, get it up I say get it up. So the rain comes along and im in CBD and Im pissed off so if anyone pushes my buttons.......a guy in a black holden commodore (police look a like) started coming right up behind me I told him to get back so he came even closer, I changed lanes he changes into that lane. I start pulling certain hand gestures he pulls it back with both hands so I made a detour to the docks carpark and he follows. I get to a stop, hop off my bike " you ****** *** the **** are you doing you wanna dance lets dance " we "dance", a lady hops out of her merc tries to stop us "dancing". I leave with a satisfied smile.....
and then we went to macdonalds and got icecream, and Johnny got a cool toy, and the we went to park and playing on the swing, i got really high and jumped off and it didn't hurt, and then we went home.
It was a really fun day.......
