19th November 2009, 14:30
Get out the 2010 calendar and mark out the weekend of Saturday 20th March for the CCA. It'll be the same flavour as previous events - about 200km, 50% off-road, all within a 40km radius of central Wellington. This time we'll have a half-day option for those that prefer a less taxing day.
The KTM & KRN crews will be there with a fleet of KTM test bikes so you can sample these glorious machines in the conditions for which they were built. Knobbly tyres are highly recommended for the CCA.
The event will be based at Plimmerton School again where you can pitch a tent on the field and we'll have the usual mammoth spit-roast feed afterwards. We'll stop by TSS Motorcycles Lower Hutt KTM showroom for refreshments. There'll be a pre-event gathering on the Friday night at the Plimmerton Boating Club where route sheets will be issued. Bring your lunchbox, scissors and selotape and get a meal too.
Participants must pre-enter, entries close 1 week prior, a late entry fee of $25 WILL BE strictly enforced and there will be absolutely no EOD. Entry forms and more info will be available soon.
See http://www.CapitalCoastAdventure.co.nz for more details.

Whoohoo :woohoo: Bloody good timing too! First baby is due on about 10th April so if you'd made it the ANZAC weekend I wasn't going to be able to go. Fingers crossed the baby doesn't turn up early!!!
Does anybody know who owned the KTM 950 ADV S back in 06 that is in the pictures page (http://ccadv08.blogspot.com/2007/09/blog-post.html) outside the BMW shop? I now own that bike (lost the rego plate a while back though) and it would be interesting to know who the original owner was (I'm no. 3 and obviously I know no. 2).

And, before anyone else gets in..........
Will I be ok on Scorpions? I have a pair that have 1.5mm of tread left and I don't want to replace them until 2012.
What sort of oil should I use, is Supercheap diesel ok?
Will the weather be ok, I don't want to have to wash the bike both days?

Bloody good question Merv - I could put some knobblies on the Tiger and skip some of the challange loops, or pinch my sons DR250, (he might have something to say about that...) or do what I did last time - buy a cheapie trail bike off TradeMe for the event (and a bit of fun either side) and flick it after.

Do it on the tiger! There were plenty of guys having a crack at the challenge sections on big bikes last time. I'll be there on the S10 and i'm sure my bro cooneyr will be doing them on his 950.
Big bike just add to the challenge, greater sense of achievement when you complete them. Also massive dissapointment(anger/swearing/yelling abuse) when you lay them down and smash your plastics. Good motivation to keep them upright:2thumbsup

What kind of bike do you have & does the pipe look original - ie is it big & heavy & industrial looking with scratches on it or does it have a big sticker label attached to it

There will be a 'USFS approved' or similar label, or there is a Euro (E4 or E5?) standard too. Or you could just get some metal mesh from your local screen door supplier, wrap it around the end of yer can & hold it on with a big jubilee clip.

Spark arrester... I've been told than any typical OEM multi-chamber muffler is effectively a spark arrester. A straight-through sports pipe isn't.
Better bet than screen door mesh is a cheap kitchen sieve - it'll have stainless mesh already in a cup-shape.

I might not take the tupperware. Last two times the sheet ripped at some stage. I'll follow some guy who thinks he knows where he's going and just double check with the GPS.
It's not a race after all, even though some people seem to think so. Last time I went through too quickly, instead of enjoying the views a bit more. Probably because I was pretty much dead last the time before that, on my 1150.

I don't recall Dakar being ruined because of the use of Sentinels, GPS and Sat Phones that are rented now as a norm by riders....

Get some decent tyres (TKC80 or equivalent) and you'll be fine. Full knobbies if you're not too worried about DOT compliance even better.
There were several 950/990s on the last runplus some big BMWs as well.

:chase:
Hmmmm i say nothing bout tyres this year.....

Colin & Joe, thanks for the comments, I'm swayed towards the CCA so had better start saving...
Colin, I'm not sure I would ride the Tussock buster on the 640, it is certainly do-able but would be a pain in the arse on the tight bits, I was thinking of the 200 for that task!

I would have done the last one on E 07's.. I did all but one technical section, two up.
It was pretty dry most places...

I personally will be on something with bite.. I would prefer to wear out a good aggressive rubber than have a crap day trying to pull, drag and kick my bike out of the crap.....

If there are nana lines around tricky stuff no probs.Yes. put something chunkier on there, you will like it. TKC80 or better is the recommendation, best to follow it. Besides, you don't have far to travel, and if marks takes you bush you'll need all the traction you can get, plus a snorkel.
On the CCA the tricky stuff, such as it is, is in longer optional sections. It's not like on a trail ride where there is say a short bog hole with a dry bypass. Most of the challenge sections are linear/through routes that you need to complete, or don't start. There's no point in paying the entry fee, paying for a ferry ride or two, then riding the day on crappy tyres so all you do is pootle about on good gravel roads - unless that is new to you, in which case you'll have a blast. But for experienced adventurers you will want a decent tyre to do the challenge sections which are more interesting to ride and view.
The dry challenge bits are about as tough as the tricky hills on the Maungatapu; the wet bits easier than the stuff we've done in Hira forest, but could devolve to that with lots of rain. TKC80, E09, T63, MT21, D606 anything of that caliber will be fine.

I rode some of it last weekend and yes I would strongly recommend a proper chunky tyre. The section I covered included multiple decent length declines on loose surfaces, the sort of thing were you are braking heavily on loose dirt steeply downhill into a 90 degree bend, and there quite a few uphills in the reverse order.
I took a good Conti Escape off and put a brand new E-09 on for the ride and was glad I did, i think I might have been in serious trouble a few times had I left the Conti on.

I used a cheap-as $60 Deestone (made in Thailand) on the back for the last CCA and it was great. Hardly worn at all, so using it again this year. Not DOT legal. Just don't get too aggressive with the cornering on the road sections.

In March hopefully we will get a sunny day and you'll need at least an SPF30 tanning oil on the back of your neck.
For the bike, just use the oil that's already in the engine as long as it not full of Nelson mud.

Makes me reflect a bit too, because it was the CCA 2 years ago that my Bro' was all booked in to do with me like we had been doing since the 1992 Pukemanu and poor bugger found out he had cancer and didn't make it to the "08. 9 months later Jan '09 he was gone, but I am sure he'll be looking down on us now he's on his eternal ride.

Even if you’re a Wellingtonian, the KTM Capital Coast Adventure will once again take you places you haven’t been before, or at least not for a while. Terewhiti Station, west of the city, once a dirt bike playground for many locals has been off-limits for the past three years during the construction of Meridian’s West Wind project. The 62 turbine 142MW wind farm was commissioned in late 2009 but has remained tightly locked to visitors. However after negotiation with Terawhiti management and Meridian Energy, we have managed to gain access to the property for this year’s CCA.
This privileged access has been granted on a ‘one-off’ basis and security and safety will be high on the list of strict conditions. Terawhiti Station management stresses that this event in no way signals any opening up of the property to further public access, those ‘wild west’ days are over. With 33km of road being developed on the project, the landscape has changed somewhat. A lot of the old tracks we used on the 2006 CCA will now be roads but it’ll be great to see those majestic rotors up close. And the old side-tracks are on the route too (unchanged).
Other highlights for the KTM CCA will be the Belmont Regional Park and the Akatarawa forest pylon tracks and the usual south coast trails. KTM New Zealand will be there with demo adventure bikes for you to try out in the conditions they were designed for.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS will be mandatory on the CCA as demanded by some land owners.

You will be asked to show your extinguisher as you enter the forestry sections. Failure to carry one will bar you from entering those sections. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

A lot of the course will not be GPS navigable as the tracks we use will not be on the base maps, you will be following a 'bread crumb' trail. You will need to use a route sheet as well (or at least ride with someone who is using one). We welcome your feedback on how to improve it.It shouldn't matter that the tracks are not on the base map just like a lot of the walking tracks are also not on the maps but you can access track logs and route files for a lot of that stuff.
The way it's been done on the South Island Dusty Butt 1000km Adventures is probably about as good as you're going to be able to do. just cut down the files until you have a series of routes to navigate in order with 50 to 250 points each depending upon the GPS units they are intended for. Then navigate in the 'Off Road' format so as to stop any auto routing interfering and taking different people different ways depending again upon the maps they have loaded.
Whether there is a sealed road there, a farm track or just a riverbed, making the entire course file designed to be used in the 'Off Road' navigation mode is the key in my opinion.
If I receive one big tracklog file from you guys then the first thing I will be doing is cutting it down to sections and converting it to numbered route files. The 300km of CCA should be easy after the 1000km each Nelson based and Otago based routes of DB files .
Hmm, perhaps I should email these comments to the cca email address directly?

Yep.
Off road navigation, no re-calculation.
I made the 1st DB1K route in 25 waypoint chunks with a waypoint on each major intersection/decision point and another WP 100m or so in the new direction. Makes sure you're heading on the right track
My old b/w Legend had no issues and even told you you were coming up on a turn when you approached them.
Effectively an electronic rollchart.

I've been biting my tongue. Like you said TA. DB1k is free so it probably doesn't count - despite the 40+ hours I put into preparing the GPS file and at least the same again for the roll chart.
Oh well. Good to see people trying to use the technology at least. I agree 100% with the offroad routing. Create a route file/s with 250 points in each. If 250 points is not enough points for the whole day do a morning and afternoon rout file. The route files do not need any map whatsoever to work i.e. can use them on the basic old eTrex with no mapping but they probably don't prompt you when you are approaching a turn.

I've ridden all of this years afternoon sections including the challenge bits on my R100GS PD, and about half of the morning section and I'll be riding the rest Friday. There are some sections where you will need to be comfortable and confident on your machine but it's all doable on a big bike.
Probably the worst I have encountered so far is a very steep downhill covered with deep chunky gravel and diagonal water channels across the track, you want to have good brakes you can trust on your bike and good balance, the PD with it's great engine braking just chugged down it in first gear, and there's a few potentially slippery grass/muddy down hills
Sections of the ride are challenging but the 800GS would be more than capable, it's down to you as a rider and your confidence on the machine. It does get down to single track in places, but big bike single trail, not 250 enduro weapon stuff. If you were only going to do the cruiser sections and skip the challenges I'd say bring the 800. I don't know what you are like on the 800 so it's your call on the trickier stuff. but any intermediate rider should be able to do it fine. I would consider myself intermediate at best, definately not expert.
And there's plenty of people to help you pick the bike up, after suitably embarrassing pictures are taken of course.
John has designed the event around bigger bikes.

There are a few spots when you have to Bulldog a 'beast', but that just needs a bit of HTFU. Some of it is tight twisty bitumen that well compensates.

Hi Tri Boy
Just remembered your TB ID. We stopped and chatted at Whiritoa about the your Scrambler a few weeks back. Made the decision and now have BMW F 800 GS, and loving it. Will be at the CCA but on a KTM 400 so I can do all the knarly bits for the views etc. Hope to meet again for a ride.
Welcome Navek. Fine choice you made with the F800. Will try to catch up sometime.

I have been riding around several dry areas, and at times to see rural fire officers, and they seem to be OK with it. This does not mean everyone thinks it is acceptable however. So far no one has not been happy with it.

Surely a bit of pipe, a few washers & an hour or 2 on the file would produce something that works? Neither diameter is too critical on a wheel spacer as long as the faces are paralell & the right spacing so it nips up evenly & it doesn't interfere with the seal or outer race on the bearing. Even leaving the outer seal off to make something fit would not be a big problem.

The front of these are a tad different to what i am used to, and the way to set them up is too!

I have mucked around with it for a bit and now have good calliper to dics clearance and its all sitting and working well.....

That's very strange Merv, it should be working even with earlier Mapsource I would have thought as .gpx file is a much more universally friendly format which has been in use a lot longer than that.
Maybe if you think it's the Mapsource version then down load version 6.13.7 That's my favorite version and it is working fine with the file.

I've loaded the data onto a Garmin 60CSx
Waypoints and routes ok, tracks were truncated.
So to many points on track for my model of gps.
If you don't look at the GPS when loading you would miss the error.
I'm fine with that, going to use the waypoints anyway.
