Christchurch protest ride
Saturday Dec 5th

Register your attendance here. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&day=2009-12-5&e=2273&c=1)

Alright folks here it is, December the 5th there will be a protest ride starting from Izone Drive in Rolleston (there will be marshals to direct you to the start point) meeting from 10.30am.

The reason we are starting in Rolleston is that hopefully the Timaru and Ashburton riders will be attending.
We will be leaving around 12.00pm heading down Main South Rd, left into Main South Rd from the Sockburn roundabout, Riccarton Rd, Hagley Ave, Oxford Tce, Lichfield St then left into Manchester st, then left into cashel st and finishing in the city mall. There we will be met by a few MPs and others.

It is time to step up the protest and make some noise, yes traffic will be held up but we have to start making ourselves heard and seen, we have done the quiet protest now it is time to show the Christchurch public we are not happy.

I am also thinking of getting the learner riders and the scooters up front doing about 70kmh. This will still be legal as the police still won't help out but I am trying to get a meeting with the area commander for transport and say help out. I have heard there are some bikes with hazard lights if there is I need one to go right up front with hazards on, it would have to be a fairly experienced rider, if that is you can you PM me please so we can touch base and finalise it.

I have e-mailed all the clubs I can think of I will be heading to some bike shops to hand out up posters and have got in touch with some contacts in the media, so what I am hoping and expecting is that we can do better then the last rally's as far as numbers is concerned. If you have t-shirts and banners then bring them and wear them, signs on your bike wouldn't be a bad thing either. If anybody is keen we should head to the Wheatsheaf for a get together after the rally.

Good on you, I will come. I don't want to put a fly in your soup but, you can't turn left from Lichfield Street onto Colombo Street. There is a no left turn sign there. Maybe go left at Oxford Terrace past the strip then onto Hereford Street then into Cathedral Square?

Cheers.

I get the point of having learners and scooters up front but I have reservations about having the 'L' platers, who by definition are inexperienced, leading a hopefully very large ride.

Also a bit concerned about some of the scooteratti needing to proceed at 70kph outside of town when some of them (and their bikes) may be quite unaccustomed to that speed. How were they catered for at the Bikoi?

Would it be an option for scooters to perhaps meet with the larger group at say Templeton and then lead the way in from there because there's nothing but a lack of self discipline preventing the larger group from proceeding at say 80kph from Rolleston to Templeton without having to have slow vehicles in front?

Just my 10 cents worth.

knuckles24
20th November 2009, 18:39
I don't mind 10 cents worth it all helps for the day, yeah you are probably right, i may lead it myself that way we can keep an eye on the less experienced, all learners and scooters are welcome otherwise how else do you get the experience riding in a group.

Isn't there already a protest ride on the 5th of december?

Please keep in mind that people riding 50cc modeds will not be able to achieve 70 km h, probably more like 50-60

There was a suggestion somewhere about a vintage or veteran bike club of some sort doing something but I think that was when it was thought that John Key was coming to town.

There's a sign on the left as you approach Colombo Street, trouble is its obscured by a big tree and you aren't aware it's there until you're on top of it.

Yes I heard that about 30mins after putting post. I will not be attending,,, a sentence in the invitation worries me,,, "yes traffic will be held up but we have to start making ourselves heard" I am not going to a protest that will just piss everyone off, this is not the best way to get our point across. Any of these protests should not seriously impact other motorists etc. Thats just my feeling on the whole matter. Have fun.

Good luck over there with your protest ride hope people are not as apathetic as here in melbourne. The only time big numbers turn up for protest rides here is when they try to stop us parking on the footpath which is currently legal in the CDB.Then every man and his dog turns up.Generally australians just take it up the rear end from the law makers, they want to micro chip our bikes next!
I still return to ch ch occassionally for a refresher ride around the south island the best motorcycling roads in the world.:2thumbsup

Wish I was.The excuse is they can't get bikes on most tolled roads and speed cameras because of no front number plate so they are looking at identification
via a micro chip unit similar to an E tag. They already have number plate reading cameras to detect unregistered vehicles.Big brother is watching and scheming ways to save us from ourselves!Oh and dip into our bank accounts.

I have finally been informed that we are unable to use the square (due to xmas things) as our finishing point but have been given an alternative which will be the city mall which is suppose to be just as good, the only part of the route that will change is that we will be going straight down lichfield st then left into manchester st then left into cashel st and finishing in the city mall. This should be the last thing that will affect saturday, so bring your banners and t-shirts and lets give it hell. SEE YOU ALL THERE IN RECORD NUMBERS

If your going to put the learners up front so you can do 70km/h there is nothing stopping anyone putting an L plate on there bike. $2 at the $2 shop. I ride a 650cc bike had my full licence for 4 years but I have an L plate on the back of my bike (only because my girlfriend is a learner and will only ride if I'm riding as well) and its a hassel taking it on and off all the time.

Technically illegal, although I don't know anyone who has ever been fined for it.

Make sure you are always "accompanying a learner and in the process of giving them lessons" when using an L-plate if you're not actually an L-plater yourself.

I hope you guys know what your doing. In Auckland when bikers wanted to protest in mall car parks the herald newspaper said something like "bikers want to disrupt mall goers".

Few things:

You will be arriving at the mall after 12pm. The car park is already going to be full !

Have you actually got permission from the mall to use their car park for your protest?

You know lots of people will be doing christmas shopping right so I think they would be angry at seeing your protest take up parking spaces.

Parliament will be closing for the year soon so all the MP's will be on their holiday and won't see your protests.

I have just been e-mailed a petition from a member, apparently it has come from a labour MP, so we will get people to sign it and then send it back. :Punk: when i posted the 1st post in this thread i suggested we should head to Wheatsheaf, if people are still keen then we can get together and plan our next step. Also i have heard from a reporter that there might be another national protest again has anyone else heard the same

As Izone drive is the last turn before the railway heading out of Rolleston towards Wards Rd and there are small townhouse type flats on the corner, the bottom end of Izone is presumably the area where we'll be congregating?
past the 1st roundabout there's a layby area

I looked on google maps. i see its just an area of shops. However on google maps it did show parking spaces on the side of the road and there was some poles with some signs on them that i couldn't quite read properly but i'm assuming they say something like " P60 " which would mean you can only park for 60 minutes or be towed away.

Back on subject. (stop feeding the trolls or people that do not know CHCH)
We will see you guys there, rain or shine.

What pisses me off is the amount of people that think they do not have to support this sort of thing.
And make weak reasons why they can not.

I bet you they will take any reduction in rego we can get tho.

So slackers turn up and help us and YOURSELF get a better deal.
Or never complain again about the price of rego.

LOL. That's because they DON'T have to support it. It aint a crime not to support it. LOL

Weak reasons? Like i'm not supporting it because i CAN afford to pay the increase because i'm not poor. Or I'm not supporting it because i'm not interested. LOL.
Why would someone support something if they CAN afford it and don't mind paying increased costs? LOL

There are too many people telling us what we can and can't do in our lives today. Regardless of how you feel about the insignia he does have the right to use it (in no small part due to those who fought against the symbol). That might be ironic but it <i> is</i> his right.

You've said how you feel. He's said how he feels. Can that be the end of it and can we just focus on the ACC issue?

sammcj
4th December 2009, 14:40
Isn't there already a protest ride on the 5th of december?

Please keep in mind that people riding 50cc modeds will not be able to achieve 70 km h, probably more like 50-60

I think anyone not capable of doing 70 should actually take up the rear (Pun slightly intended) / ride closer to the back of the pack.

While is important everyone affected takes place - I'm sure a lot of people don't want it to be as hard on their clutch as the last ACC ride which resulted in a number of bikes running hot from the slow stop-starts and never getting up enough speed to cool down.

Should be a good ride, sure hope we turn some heads!

Ever since fairfax group took over the press and other media orgs in NZ it's really turned into right-wing shit-bucket.

I know a guy who wrote a program that samples how long articles stay up on stuff.co.nz and what their keywords were - aparently he had some pretty interesting results - I'll see if I can get him to pull up something on motorcycles (not sure if it'll work with the new site design).

If you want a laugh have a read of ACC's "strategic plan 2007-2012": http://www.acc.co.nz/PRD_EXT_CSMP/groups/external_communications/documents/papers_plans/dis_ctrb093142.pdf

"ACC is responsible for"..."Maintaining stable levies..."

"We use time, money and resources wisely."

"We engage with others in ways that consider and reflect their uniqueness – both as individuals and as collective groups."

"We care about and support others. We involve and listen to others and recognise their contributions."

Actually have a read of: http://www.acc.co.nz/PRD_EXT_CSMP/groups/external_communications/documents/reports_results/prd_ctrb118047.pdf around page 22ish?

And I quote my friend here (yes I have one!):

"If they could get their operating cost down to what the where in 2002, the costs/claims % would be looking good at 8ish%
not 12%, They seem to becoming 'less efficient', at a good speed aswell!"

The number of long-term weekly compensation claims is increasing, those from motor vehicles in declining, works increasing, this shows that people hurt in motor accidents get back to work, people that are hurt at work try to keep away from work as long as possible as they are increasing the most.

I did not get there to hear all the speeches but was there any ideas floated on how to deal with the increase when it comes in? I spoke to one guy who had 3 bikes and suggested he just register one plate and swap it which he had thought of doing. I am thinking of reducing my insurance cover to offset the increase. Another idea could be to just stagger the risk eg register for 3 months and put the bike on hold for the following 3 months then register for the next 3 months etc.

Cool, If you don't ride to work, for work, for travel and fun...I ride every day, to work, at work, for travel and fun....as I've said before, how many tickets would be enough?
Why should I put myself at risk of losing my license and my job because the Nats are trying to tax me off the road?
This only works if you have the money for 2 bikes, or a car and a bike.

how a bout just a ride by, from watching the vidio taken at Halswell Junction rd, the riders were very well behaved. a similar type of ride starting from the Esplanade in Sumner, which would be a great gathering point for this, from there up Humphreys Drive to linwood ave, and so on
destination can be antwhere, but on a Sat a route that was around the mauin shopping centers, as just a ride by, would expose us to a large public area. Evn better if it was a very wam day just befoe Xmass.

You know how i told you that this is not the end, well........... have just e-mailed Ullyses in nelson for a possible protest and get together up there, i am not going to let to much out of the bag at this stage as i believe we are being watched by certain groups, remember that we are not only fighting for bikers rights but also the rights of the sexual abuse victims and keeping ACC owned by NZ for the benefit of all kiwis, forgot to mention earlier that we got a big thanks from the sexual abuse victims group for making a stand and i think we need to keep them involved and in our minds because they are easy targets just like us. keep watching this thread for updates and details (WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY NICK SMITH)

Have to agree with all the peole who are saying to thanks to the organisers. Also, thanks to Charles Lamb (used to have him as a lecturer at varsity, where he was also very good), I thought he spoke very well, and I thought he combined all of our thoughts into a pretty good 5 minute speech.

Lichfield Street full of bikes was an impressive sight! The smell of petrol, the sound of engines... excellent.

I have to agree with this Thanx to knuckles & C. Lamb he's doing a awesome job fronting for us all

didn't see the Press today, but someone told me there was nothing in it about the ride. Saturday paper had a small column of about 5 lines saying there was going to be a ride, but they even got that wrong by saying it would finish in the Square.
Ditto on Saturday night TV1 news, no coverage! If we were a group of Maori doing a Hikoi march through the Lyttelton tunnel I bet it would get more coverage.
Maybe we didn't make enough noise?

I had e-mailed them and even talked to a nelson reporter who also is connected with the press here in town before the protest and she even said they may not do an article and guess what we didn't even get a mention which has prompted me to a rather abrupt letter to the press mentioning the numbers that turned up and how about some support, i would urge you guys to let them know how you feel and start supporting christchurch events as most of us do buy the press and are keeping them in business. :bash:

I just emailed: letters@press.co.nz but there are other options. See: http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/2886/Contact-press-co-nz

I just kept it simple. Subject line was: Saturday's ACC Protest - Ignored by The Press. As follows:

Dear Sir.

On Saturday about 1,000 motorcycles and scooters took part in a protest against the proposed ACC increases. The event was well organised and passed off without incident. Speakers included Prof. Charles Lamb who has succeeded in exposing Dr Smith's statistics for the damned lies they are.

Motorcyclists are a minority group working hard to have our voice heard. That The Press chose to ignore the event is more than a little disappointing. Are you perhaps not as politically independent as you would have us believe?

Dear Sir/madam

I was the organiser on the Bikers Against ACC protest ride that happened on the 5th December in which a record number of motorbikes turned up, there would have been close to a 1000 bikers unite for the cause, i had e-mailed you guys to let you know what was happening in hope that we may get some coverage as this would have to be the biggest turn out for the region but for some reason you could not support us by covering this in your paper. We are fighting for our rights and that is that the proposed ACC levy hike is unfair and discriminating against bikers regardless of what sort of bike you ride also we are supporting the sexual abuse victims as well and also trying to save ACC from privatisation and keeping it in the hands of all New Zealanders. So i would hope in future that you would cover any events in christchurch and take into account that a lot of us are readers of the press and subscribers.

Dear Decision Maker,

I'm simply going to copy to you exactly what others have written below; I think it sums it up pretty well and I think it is important to New Zealander's that The Press realises this is effecting a lot of people.
I truly hope that you could find it financially viable to write a front page article on the ACC protests from The Bikers view.
As a group we feel / know we are being undermined for certain political reasons, we would truly respect and be very thankful for any coverage you could spare.
Your reply would be much appreciated, even if it is denying my request.

maybe we need some boobs on the back of each bike, that seems to get a shit load of media coverage every year.
maybe we should have made it Sunday, and joined onto the back of the Santa parade.
The media did seem to shun us.
With Xmas so close, many people will be heading away on holidays & I feel the whole protest thing may lose some momentum over those 3 or 4 weeks. We probably need to step up the action in the lead up to Xmas, and maybe look at doing the same thing (or similar) every week until then. Is it time to fill all the parks in town one morning? The one up north seemed to go well. The cars will have nowhere to park, but it should highlight the fact of what could happen to the roads should many be forced off their bikes due to cost.

AlpinePossum

As I said... this wasn't much of a protest... but it's a Damn Good Bike Show!

The kids in the streets thought the Santa Parade had come early!

Some random thoughts for you to chew on...

* The cops here are utterly clueless about protests. Protests are _not_ things for cops to go all "hands off" about. Protests are bloody dangerous things an inch away from a riot, full lots of people who are already angry. A policemans duty in such a situation is _not_ to stop or hinder the protest. The policemans duty is to make damn sure nobody on any side gets hurt. It would just take one impatient asshole in a car to slam into the bikers for things to get really really ugly.

* There is another large body of folks who are implicitly on our side. The push bikers. Yip, they're scared if they squeak they'll get slammed with a matching levy. But if we're scared of and pissed off with clueless cagers... I'm promise you cyclists are even more vulnerable and angry. We could do a lot worse to borrow some of the cyclists tactics (Google for "critical mass" and "we are traffic" protest actions.) In fact, instead of just borrowing the tactics, how about inviting them to join with us. We don't want higher ACC payouts, we want fewer ruddy accidents! ACC is two large ugly steps beyond the proverbial "Ambulance at the foot of the cliff"!

* The Nat Party is beholden to big money, so if our protests start costing them money, they might listen. For example, find the supermarket chain, red shed or whatever that donated the most money to the Nats... and then early on a Saturday before Christmas.... Go unshopping.

Fill up parking spaces.

Contemplate life.

Window shop.

Give kiddies free rides (with helmets etc).

Buy nothing.

* The Nats are vulnerable to the populist vote. They have big media and big money on their side. Clubbing together and buying ad space on TV or Google Ads, (not Fairfax), community news papers. This may be more effective than a ride.

* Instead of a protest ride, a protest bike show. Invite the general public. Invite the kiddies. Let them all see, drool over, touch, sit on our shiny cool toys. And then explain to them carefully what a Bad Bad Man Mr Smith is and why you must _never_ vote for him...

Ps: Thanks Knuckles for organizing this... superbly done, superbly organized!

But let's face it, The Man, like a bratty kid has his fingers firmly in his ears going "Lalalala I Can't _Hear_ You!!" Time to take it to another level.

Ps: Thanks UkUsa: Nice pic of my Suzi!

Have typed this out fast so it will have some spelling mistakes but here you go:

Here is the letter from Smithy:

Thank you for writing regarding the proposed ACC levy rates for motorcycle owners for the 2010/2011 year.

The proposed rathes that have been released by ACC are not the finished rathes. ACC has released these initial proposals for public consultation. The proposals include increases across ACC's different levies, not only those of motorcyclists.

ACC has recieved over 2,700 submissions from the public on its proposals. This is a far greater number than is isually recieved. Both ACC and I are conscious of the level of public concern at the proposed levy increases and I have also meth with a number of representatives from the motorcycleing fraternity to hear their concerns directly. The submissions will be considered by ACC before it's Board makes a recommendation to me. I will then make a final recommendations to Cabinet, which will decide on the new levy rathes. The new rathes will be effective from 1 April 2010 for earners and employers and from 1 July 2010 for motorists.

Levy rathes at the level prposed by ACC so far are unlikely to be acceptable to many NZers, and I am taking steps to prevent increases of this scale, which are aligned to ACC's current policies and governing legislation.

ACC faces significant and serious financial problems that the Government has had to give urgent attntion. ACC lost 2.4 billion in 2007/2008 and another 4.8 billion last year. It's unfunded liabilities have increased from 4 billion to 13 billion, as claim costs have risen 57 percent in the last four years.

The finiacial impact of these funding shoftfalls can be addressed by reducing ACC's costs, increasing levies, improving rehabilitation outcomes, or reducing entitlements, and the Government's approach is a balanced mix. Measures are being introduced to change ACC's practices and governing legislation, so that levy increases can be kept as low as possible.

Work is underway to improve ACC's rehabilitation performanced and to better manage payments to treatment providers. Gains in these areas will, over time, have a positive effect on levy rates.

I introduced an ACC Refomr Bill on 22 October 2009. This lgislation will see ACC's prposed levy increases, including those for motorcycles, reduce. I am also pushing out the date the SCheme needs to be fully funded, from 2014 until 2019, removing some Scheme extensions introduced by the previous Government like suicide, as well as removing entitlements for criminals.

A stocktake of ACC is also underway. The pbject of the stoacktake is to deliver practical reccomendations for improving performance and to ensure our accident insurance Scheme is affordable for levy payers and taxpayers. It will investifage, amongst other things, drivers of the cost increases and alternative options for sevice provision and funding. The Stocktakge Group will also look at whether we can make greater use of the proviate sector for injury management and compensation. However, I remain committed to 24/7 no fault accident compensation scheme.

Motorcycle accident claims have risen from 871 in 1998 to 5044 in 2008, a greater increase than any area of claims. While the annual road toll has been decreasing over the past decard, some 27% from 501 to 366, motorcycle fatalities have increasd 21%. These increases cannot be dismissed simply on the basis motorcycle numbers increasing, as the number of claims per motorcycle have grown significantly over the past decade.

Levy increases are required. In the case of motorcycles, if the true cost was charged for motorcycle injuries on public roads, levies would range from $1200 for smaller motorcycles to $3700 for those over 600cc. Even with the levy increases proposed by ACC, every car owner will be paying $77 per year to subsidise injuries of motocyclists. This funding of motorcycle accident costs by other road users occurs notwithstanding the claim that it is cars that cause the accidents. Even if we assume that all accidents involving both motorcycles and other vehicles are the fault of the other driver, the cost of other motorcycle accidents involving no other vehicle still far exceeds the proposed levy. I also stress given the claims to contrary, that this analysis only inculdes accidents on public roads and does not include trail bike or farm bike accidents that are charged to other ACC accounts.

I can assure you that the governmenty will contsider levy rates carefully, and will be exploring the best options to minimise levy increases whil ensuring that the ACC Scheme is viable and effectiong.

Thank you for taking the time to write. I do take on your concerns and can assure you that the Government will not be proceeding with levy increases as large as those initially proposed by the ACC Board.

Sigh! Remember the psychology of the conservative politician.... They just _love_ rebellions to crush. Don't give them such easy excuses to call out the spooks and the arm response. (You just know they want to!)

Free spirits fill their nightmares and their favourite wet dreams are filled with the sound of boy racers cars being crushed... to which they'd as gladly add the sound of our bikes being crushed too.

Let's focus on the issues...

* Subgroups such as the bikers being punished for the sins of others.

The path of the righteous biker is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of ACC.
Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the biker through the valley of darkness,
for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost bikers. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and
furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.
And you will know my name is knuckles when I lay my vengeance upon you Nick Smith.

Loved the real quote from the movie

Oh you are showing your poet side well said though :2thumbsup

I know it has been said before, I understand , yes , but its a protest ride as in I am pissed off

all fine and dandy , I know the reasons and respect them. I would have ridden slowly on that day too

BUT

Slippery smith , has made his mind up and nothing short of the springbok tour will change it

Thank you for the vid , most enjoyable !
