A few questions for those in the Ducati know.
I've got a chance to buy a 2001 750 monster in excellent condition with just 11000 km on the clock at a real good price. It's just been fully serviced and appears a good deal to me but as I've never owned a duck please help me with the following.
It will be used for commutting 250 km a week with weekend blasts thrown in and the occassional trip away.
What can I expect from it?Any good to commute on?What servicing intervals? What to look for?General positives and negatives on this model. What price do they generally sell for?
Any (serious) replies will be appreciated.

Great all weather bikes. Air cooled and simple so less to go wrong = more reliable. Service interval - change oil & Filters every 10,000km. Get valve clearances checked every 20,000km and change belts every 20,000 km. 750 and 600 are fairly simple engines so you can learn to do the belts and stuff yourself saving some serious money.

I have found parts are cheaper that Suzuki and Honda - I haven't owned any other japanese bikes so can't compare Ducati Ownership with Kwak or Yam.

I have never regretted owning a Ducati. I commuted on mine daily for 2 years through Auckland traffic 52km each day - no problems.

Get different end cans and a small fly screen and you'll be away laughing. My old Monster 620 was a great commuter/weekend runner. Oh also, you simply cannot beat the sound of an air-cooled Ducati twin!!!

You'll love it. just put on a screen on,gut out the pipes.
The sound of a dry clutch rattle mixed in with thundering pipes will help move the traffic on your commute.

What can I expect from it?

Huge Grins :)

All Ducatis are like that - Monsters even more so

Km's are low enough that belts should not be an issue.

Some questions I would be asking include..

Were valve cl;earances checked at last service? (easy enough to do on the naked air cooled motor)

Was it well looked after? If parked outside it may be suffering from corrosion - are fork seals and sliders ok? belt pulleys?

Check the headset area - bearings and frame tubes - Monsters are wheelie prone - that area can get hammered if not put back down gently. And no flat spots in the front rim please

Tyres, chain and sprokets all ok? they're a maintenace cost you dont want to have to meet too soon

Just remember, "Everything you have ever heard about Italian bikes is true"

I get the feeling that its the good ol 2 valve ss type motor in that bad boy. I commute on mine and have the odd weekend blast away. Great fun, a bit different, awesome with loud pipes, great riding position, heaps of people in the know on here to show you where to get stuff and to educate yourself on the finer points. You'll not regret it.

+1, what he said. I'd never go back to a four cylinder bike, twins rule

And this is a man of true taste, he has 2 real nice Ducs. I'm trying to find another Duc to add to my collection (an SD). Italian stuff will get right under your skin.

Nothing wrong with that bike. Just don't get yourself a 1098 or 1198, I've heard the first service costs for those aint cheap!

The only thing I don't like about those dry clutch Ducati's is when one parks up next to me. People look at me and ask if I have something rattling in my exhaust!

I too asked the same questions before purchase of a m900.

I do 600-1200km's a week on mine and apart from running out of gas today it has never caused me to walk (apart from a slight hiccup with the law) But neither instance was the bike breaking down after 9000kms. I did have a few fueling issues but that was me wanting moar powwwer.

Ear to ear grins everytime I start it and rumble everywhere.

I have terrible tikeritis too and it really needs clip-ons and a tail chop IMHO. But thats personal taste.

Get it; you won't regret it. There are so many helpful sorts around who can guide you through any issues.

So, Mixone, did you buy it yet?

Don't know about that particular model, but it's recommended that the belts be changed every two years on mine even if the bike isn't run. They can develop a "set".

The belts don't expire suddenly at X Ks or at a particular date, but the costs of a belt failure don't bear thinking about.

Had a fleet car here on which the belt let go before the recommended Ks had even arrived. A complete engine rebuild was performed under warranty, but belts still make me nervous...

Not yet but you lot have convinced me that it's the right move once I sell my bike.
Anyone want a cheap BMW K75S?
