View Full Version : What I learnt for my first spill

I'm gonna keep this shortish because I'm typing with one hand but I think this is well worth sharing (and I was bored sitting in hospital doing nothing)

So, firstly, sorry for screwing with our ACC campaign, I couldn't resist having my first crash.

The main point of this though is so I'll pass on a few things I learnt, the very hard way.

1. ALWAYS give yourself room and stay away from the "centre line"
2. Take a late apex so you can take another bite if so stuff up
3. Keep your eyes on the road - YOU WILL MAKE IT.
5. Expect a car will ALWAYS be around the corner if you can't see through it.
4. MOST IMPORTANT - green markers on the side of the road mean culvert. Stay away from them!

So the explanation, I didn't do anything bad as such but I didn't do much right when I should have. I was close to the "centre line" but not over it. Going well below what I could have done. An SUV came around the corner close to the line as well. I got spooked, sat it up for a little to give me more room. But then the corner tightened. I hit the grass, and started to head back onto the road. About 1/2 metre from getting back on the road, I hit a culvert. A deep one!

I got off bloody lucky, broken hand and broken pelvis. But others need to realise the only mistakes I made on my whole 40min ride. On the only corner I did it happened to have a car on it. I didn't do anything majorly wrong but the little things I did, compounded quickly. Always expect it, even when you're not even CLOSE to your limits.

OK carry on :)

yup.. he's been in hospital since friday arvo.. if it was just the pelvis or just the hand they probably would've let him try to go home but it kinda limits him.. bike looks to have come to a sudden stop on the passenger seat as it was probably inverted and in reverse when it hit the driveway

Well that boy is doing alright, he is waiting to hear from the Doctor's today (hopefully) if he is going to be having an operation on his hand or not. Not much is happening up at the hospital today as they sure are taking their time. Will let you know what is going on when I know it. Hope you are all well KB people

Hey ckai, sorry to hear about your nasty surprise.

Many don't live to tell the tail. The guy up in Silverdale a month or so back didn't.

Riding your motorcycle should be a relaxing and pleasurable experience. Your bike becomes an extension of your body and respoding to road situations should be instinctive.

It takes a while to get there though and your assessment tells me that you are making a good start.

Great attitude. Get back on that bike and practice your road position and safe cornering.

Good luck.

unlucky.. hope ya get well soon.
Depends if you have a 250cc or 1000cc bike on how much hospital time you get... the biger the bike the more acc you will pay which means you can have more time in hospital.. doesnt matter about your injuries...

i heard that they were also going to increase the levies if you are a female registered owner :dodge:

Sorry to hear about your accident. Yeah, you're right - little things can so easily (and quickly) add up to a major before you know it.

All the best for your recovery. Thanks for sharing your tale of woe and lessons learnt with us.

p.s. how's the bike? (asked in true biker fashion....)

thanks you lot for all the encouragement. Shit i hate typing with one hand! :) it really is like what all the experienced riders tell you...Once you put on the lid you switch your brain on 100% of the time. I thought since i was going slow I could relax a bit. Utter crap! If you can't be on it all the time, don't ride! It's not worth it.

And never break your pelvis! hahah it's the worst bone I've broken to date.

As for the bike...the rear end is pretty much at a right angle to where it should be. I'll try and get the wife to put photo's up. They are cool to see. Hopefully I get walking tomorrow and I can piss off outa here.

The most important thing I learnt after the first Bin was not to have a second.....
The most important things I learnt from my second bin was that I did not learn from my first and don't have a third.

What I learn't from my third....:doh::doh:

haha love it. So far insurance has been sweet. The called as soon as they got the fax form and the bike was picked up on Friday, and started to be gone through today. Will be interesting to see what they come up with.

almost forgot Pictures in my profile (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/album.php?albumid=2990)

They're all from the back since they're the most impressive but the front did get some damage.

Update about the body:

Home from hospital today and still waiting for CT scan on hand so they know if they need to operate. Got sick of being there so told them I was leaving.

Apparently I ended about 20m from the impact (flying most of it), not the 10m I 1st thought (wife maybe exagerating though), so not bad in only 2 breaks in the hand and 2 in the pelvis. We worked out I hit the ground once. I was told landing 1m sooner would have meant I would've hit the concrete pipe under a driveway :gob: A little more luck I think.

I was trying to go over the crash in my head the other day. Thought it would be good rehab and I was bored :) It's amzing how much I remember and even remember the imact I had on my head and what I said when I hit the culvet (boy that knocked the wind outa me). The feeling is crazy going over it again. And kinda funny that it was a quiet, clear "shit" that I remember the instant I realised I hit the hole.
