Don't you wish car drivers would use their fucking mirrors - just had a driver decide that the fact I was approaching him at 50kmh in the lane next to him wasn't enough of a reason to stop him from pulling out. :pinch:
I'd just come through three sets of green lights heading up Wellesley Street from Queen Street towards Victoria Park. I was in the middle of three lanes, he was second back in the right hand side in the right turning lane. At about 100m back the light was red so I was slowing down as I came up the hill, then it turned green as I was about 50m away - I thought of speeding up again but thought I'd better not rush the light just in case any red light runners were on the loose. Bloody good thing I kept my speed down at around 40-45kmh because as I was coming up to about two car lengths back he turned on his indicator and pulled into my lane at the same time.
Luckily my emergency reactions kicked in and I turned slightly to the left to avoid hitting him square on, and started braking. My right foot peg and muffler slammed into the front quarter panel his car and my foot got caught in his front wheel arch - thankfully the only damage to me is a few sore toes and a light graze on my shin. I'm hoping that my alloy race style (fixed) rearsets dug into the side of his car and did some damage. Damage to bike is only some rub marks on the exhaust which will polish out.
Was an Asian guy in late model silver Honda, either an Accord or Prelude, first three letters BQU.
After stopping about 2m in front of him after hitting the side of his car, I shouted abuse at him and then continued across the intersection and waited for him to come by so I could either stop him and call the cops or at least get his full number plate - the sneaky fuck saw and did a u-turn before buggering off. Unfortunately the lights changed and I wasn't able to chase him down so I had to leave it as is. Still very fucked off and slightly on edge.
Lessons learnt: :hitcher:
Don't think that just because your lane is clear and the light is green that you don't have any obstacles to worry about.
Stay alert - all the time.
Loud pipes don't save lives - those who have heard my TRX know that it's not exactly quiet.
Bucket racing comes in handy for keeping control of your bike when being physically pushed out of your lane.
Quick decision making and knowing what to do and how to brake effectively are priceless - if I had simply chose to brake I most certainly would have hit him at at least 30kmh.
