Seems there are two spellings for Bikehoi and Bikhoi.

So as this word was 'born' on KB lets see what the correct spelling should be

It started here as Bikeoi. The media changed it to Bikhoi.

Bikoi is closer to the root word in visual appeal and makes more sense as a cross-cultural pun.

However, the organisers have insisted on BIKEOI and I've deferred to their wishes in things I've published.

But the problem with "Bikeoi" is that the "eo" doesn't work without a hyphen, so it should be "Bike-oi", if you want to keep the "e".

Otherwise, Bikoi is better, since the spelling works, and it takes the first 2 letters from "Bike", the last 2 from "Hikoi", and shares the middle letter... Everybody's happy... :)

The actual original spelling was BIKEOI! . Wiv an excalmation mark!

I hesitated when creating the original post between bikoi (as noted, etymologically closer to the derivation), and bikeoi . I thought that as it was a new word of unknown meaning , both the meaning, and the pronunciation would be cryptic if it were bikoi ( bikk -oy ? wots a bikk ? )

Now I think even non bikers know what it is. So it doesn't really matter.

The press eeem to ahve settled for bikoi, having got their heads around the 'it's a hikoi - with bikes' thing.

Make it BIKOI

(The capitalisation was equally haphazard- I left the caps lock on by mistake !)

The "yes, but" is all very well, but the convention is established as BIKEOI. I do understand your observation.

Regrettably the 'interwebby thing' to borrow from Ixion's vernacular seems to prefer bikoi (86,300) as it returns much more results than a search for the 'correct' bikeoi (3710 )spelling at last check.

"BIKEOI!" looks like we are protesting for better quality OIL for our BIKE.

The T.V. folk say "bikoi" with a "bic" (like the pen or shaver).

I've been saying "bikeoi" with a "bike" (like the vehicle).

Is there an "official" way to say it?

Me too. I prefer Bikoi, but the consensus amongst the organisers was Bikeoi, so I have been going with the flow. Whatever we choose, we need to be consistent. If we are making a change from Bikeoi to Bikoi, then all I ask is that the change needs to be communicated to all and consistently applied.

Yes. The official pronunciation is:

Bike (like the vehicle) + oi (like "oi Nick! Get your hand out of my pocket!")

I think of it as by-coy

The pronunciation 'bee koy' that keeps cropping up on TV and radio must be the Austruckenfarlian variant :stupid:

Actually, Its the right way to say it if you get down and dirty and gritty..

Hikoi is said Hee-koi

So technically, Bikoi is Bee-koi

just my 10 cents..

If it were less than 10 cents - we'd have to round it up, otherwise it wouldn't be worth anything then :killingme

Q How do you start an argument?
A Ask for an opinion on KB

How will getting the pronunciation and etymology of a made up word correct stop Nix Myth from stealing my money and selling off my birthright?

I also note that this argument occurs frequently with the native language. You know the one that had no written version until the country was colonised.
For fucks sake don't ask where the H goes!

Stick with BIKEOI, it took me ages to get my workmates at the hospital to learn that. I dont want to go through that again.

BTW, one of the kaumatua I deal with thinks it's an absolutely brilliant word, says he takes his hat off to the man that thought it up.
