Odo not working

Hi all,

During a trip down south my odo randomly stopped working. The speedo is still working. I'm riding a Honda Jade CB250.

So my questions are:
- can i get a generic odo/speedo cable to fix this? assuming this is the problem
- how easy is it to replace? and tips?

Cheers, yeah I might just pull it all apart and have a nosie. The speedy needle was jumping about a bit, but after the odo gave up it's been steady as. Oh yeah and there was a bit of a squeeking noise before. If its not the cable, what else?

does it have a trip counter? try pushing the rest button lots and lots, while your moving as well (if you can manage it).. sometimes things get stuck (worth a try).
otherwise it sounds like something has jammed up inside the odo itself.
the cable drives the speedo and odo (and trip meter), so if the speedo is fine, it will be an issue inside the speedo/odo/trip combo.

Yep there's a trip counter, the reset on it is a twisty knob which you twist to rank it back to 000 past 999. I'll mess about with it tonight and see what happens.

Reckon the problems more likely in the dash than with the cable? The mechanic mentioned that the cable might be on the brink (jumping speedo needle) thats why i assumed it was cable related. Cheers

oh yeah, i forgot to say (as it seems i always do), that there is a guy in upper hutt (not sure where you are) that fixes speedo's/odo's etc.
he put a new needle on my VF1000R speedo for me when it broke off - and made the odo numbers go around again. I think (dont quote me) that he is retired but does the odd job from his work shop at home now.

I checked both ends of the cable and it appeared to be sweet, rotating smoothly when i rolled the wheel.

So i opened up the speedo for a look see. Found the problem alright. A piece of glass jammed itself into the odo gearings (the glass window into the speedo had busted at some point before i got the bike).

This had caused the gears to cease up and looks like its stripped the teeth off the long plastic cog that runs directly after the steel one the cable connects to.

I removed the piece of glass and tried rotating the gearings. Looks like its pretty mangled up, got some movement on the odo but the plastic cog jumps like crazy (looks like this is affecting the speedo too and might be why the speedo needle was jumping round).

The whole unit looks machine sealed so i doubt i'll be able to take it apart to replace the mangled cog. Might have to try to reform it as best i can with a hot knife.
