Was thinking of putting one on when I run the Tard wheels on Suzy as the speedo drive doesn'' work with that wheel set.
Any input would be cool or other ideas for that matter, cheers all.

just make sure the top speed is not limited to "cycle speeds"

i have one of these > http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Parts-for-sale/Other/auction-255809457.htm
seems to work ok on my motard ( i had the problem my new wheels would not accept the spedo drive )
I have gone from just a speedo to having rev counter, temp using a separate sensor.
I love to know revs and temp.
got it online from USA as a kit for my bike and wasent that expensive.. and dead easy to wire up too.
I am sure there are many other makes out there..

Been using them for years on road / adventure bikes.. Set up right gives accurate speed / ave speed / max speed etc..
Need one that will record over 110km.. heaps dont.
Top end Cateye ok.. We used VDO ones.
Also need long kit (wiring) or on that goes to back wheel on bicycle.
The std wires to front wheel are too short and many are difficult to join.

Used them on the XR, Nordwest, Savage...
Love them.

Used one on a VFR400 'rat bike' years back, it was fine up to about 70 kays or a bit more, but got confused after that.
glued the magnet to the rim, and mounted the sensor near it.
dont get one with a reed switch (the type i had) - the switch starts bouncing and looses it at high speed (i know because thats what mine had) it's a mechanical switch after all opening and closing very fast.
try to get one with a non moving switch, a hall effect sensor or similar.
and remember - you may want to fit a light so you can see it while riding at night.
i remember being pulled up at night on the vfr400 once, 'but officer - i could not see the speedo - it's dark, and i have a WOF', 'and if i could, it kind of gets confused at high legal speeds'.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.
Struggling to find a cycle computer with a long enough lead to the sensor and all the wireless ones are max 650mm distance.
Sam I Am, I like the look and sound of that, I looked on TM and it says computer sold sep??
So as not to look like a complete gonk on TM does yours have a separate brain etc to go with it ... kinda seems like buying a car without tyres!!

I extended the wires and added some small plugs so it can be disassembled.

That's just the holder with the lights.

Cheers Nordie, a while ago on my MTB a pine cone snapped my cable and we successfully fixed that, spose it would be feasible to chop the cable and add a bit in, be a less spendie way a of doing it to which rates with me.

And you can splice in heavier duty wire.

Yes could do with that, best to run it on the disc side I am guessing so as to tie the speedo wire to the front brake line.
Anyone know which brands will go to a higher speed?, save me trial and error.
Really only need it for round town but to show 100kmph would be handy for the feds on the open road.
Reason is I just picked up about 21 months work 25 km out of town, road loaded with twisties so will bang the gixxer tard wheels on for this to save my adv rubber for adv riding plus it handles better on the 17 inch on the road.

I've had speedos on my bicycles before where the specs say up to 299kmh
It's written pretty clearly on the specs that are in the packet.

Yes .
I saw one of these on a fellow KB'ers biker last night - great looking unit.
not sure how much they cost though
as for plain ol cheap push bike ones.. yes - can extend wires (I can help if needed - and if your near wellington) - and no i dont know which ones go up to high speeds. but some may say they use a hall effect pickup rather than a reed switch (cheep - cant go fast) type.

Hmm, live in Wanaka ... got a soldering iron and a wife tho so we should be good to go.
This caught my eye, wireless up to 1 m which would be plenty to the disc area pickup.
Goes -99.9 (not sure how than works) to plus 99.9 so if speedo not reading then I am speeding easy!! :shit:

I've been using them for years on my bikes. Calibrated to the diameter of whatever wheel you use they are surprisingly accurate. After the mufti car pulled me over and told me i had hit 136km/hr i checked and found the bicycle computer had registered a top speed of 138. I currently use a Cateye Strada (because you don't need a degree in computing to set the thing up) and have extended the cable with some stereo speaker wire i had lying around and then covered it with some of that shrinkage stuff.
Just a hint about the install i now use a rare earth magnet superglued to the disc carrier. Which makes them almost impossible to remove.

Hey Andi,
I have supermoto'ed by DRZ400 with RGV250 wheels and use a BBB cycle computer which are available at most chch cycle shops. It works great and goes up to 200kmph (I have had it up to 152kmph at Ruapuna), very easy to install and was only $35.
The wire is not long enough to reach the brake disk so I glued magnet to rim which works fine, then just cable tied cable to brake line, jobs done!
