Yay! I got to ride the VifFerraRi for the second day in a row, coz #2Son was packing a sad and wagging work again. Because it was such a buzz, and because I wasn't in stealth mode, I was a wee bit exuberant.

So, I pull over. The nice young polis goes "Blah blah blah... accelerated out into the traffic a bit fast, seemed to be going faster than the other traffic, blah blah."
Ruh-roh....
So, I give him my licence, he writes some stuff down, checks my new WOf, goes away to check if I'm a criminule, and comes back.
"Yup, that's all fine, take it easy, enjoy your day."

I waited till he got back in the car, and tired to start my bike quietly and take off with minimum revs (no spud in the Satatune, y'see...). No worries.
Wunner if the guy I passed on the green Kwaka by the Greville Road turnoff was so lucky? He didn't look too happy waiting with the cop...

Strangely, at the time I wasn't too worried, waiting to see what he was going to do after he went back to his car, but after I left I felt quite ecstatic.:woohoo:

AFAIK, they can ping you for "excessive acceleration" - you don't have to exceed the speed limit.

Shit, I got hassled for that back when I was 17 (26 years ago). I was told "it's not the speed you were doing, it's the speed you would have ended up doing if I hadn't stopped you..."

Sorry, I should have been cleared on this. Like Ian, I didn't get done. Simply told off about the rate of acceleration.

That's a load of crap though. How would they know you weren't going to stop accelerating once you reach 50kmph for example. 'Excessive acceleration' sounds very open to abuse, I assume being inherently subjective.

2A Persons not to engage in unauthorised street or drag racing, or other related prohibited activities on roads
(1) A person must not operate a motor vehicle in a race, or in an unnecessary exhibition of speed or acceleration, on a road unless the operation of the vehicle in that manner is authorised by law.
(2) A person must not, without reasonable excuse, intentionally pour onto, place on, or allow to spill onto a road—
(a) any petrol, oil, or diesel fuel; or
(b) any other substance likely to cause a vehicle to undergo loss of traction.
(3) A person must not, without reasonable excuse, operate a motor vehicle on a road in a manner that causes the vehicle to undergo sustained loss of traction unless the operation of the vehicle in that manner is authorised by law.
(4) In this section and in section 96(9), the operation of a motor vehicle in a particular manner is authorised by law if,—
(a) in the case of a race or an exhibition of speed or acceleration,—
(i) the speed of the vehicle is within the applicable speed limit or speed limits; and
(ii) the vehicle operator does not contravene any enactment other than this section that applies in relation to the operation of the vehicle; or
(b) the operation is conducted on a road that is closed for the purpose under section 319(h) or section 342 of the Local Government Act 1974, and is conducted in accordance with the conditions (if any) imposed under Schedule 10 of that Act; or
(c) the operation is otherwise authorised by or under an enactment other than this section.


The catch-all "(ii) the vehicle operator does not contravene any enactment other than this section that applies in relation to the operation of the vehicle;" is somewhat disturbing though. They have to have something else but that's probably not too hard to find (or invent).

I think in my case, he may have been fishing. He must've been parked up on the side of the road (or was a fair way back). Unlike those annoying people who trundle out onto the motorway at 70 km/h, I accelerated up to speed (actually had to slow down...) on the on ramp, saw there was gaps in all lanes, so I made my way to the outside lane in 'an efficient manner'.
He actually said, "The other traffic was doing 90-100km/h, and you seemed to be going faster, so you must've been speeding".
Translation:
"The other traffic was going a bit slow, maybe because I was there, and I was too far back to get a lock on your speed, so I can't actually charge you with any offence".
I saw his lights in my mirrors maybe 800m back, and slowed down. At that stage, I thought he must've pinged me, so made my way across to the side, but he probably thought, "Damn! I can't ping him for speeding, but maybe there's something else I can do him for...."
I think from his trou he may have been a bike cop.
One strange comment was, "800cc? That's quite a big powerful bike! Take it easy..." (I'm thinking, "Big? Not really...." My last bike was a thou....)

The so-called 'Boy Racer' legislation (despite the fact it actually affects everyone not just 'Boy Racers', whatever the fuck they migt be) was an amendment to the Land Transport Act 1998 called the Land Transport (Unauthorised Street and Drag Racing) Amendment Act 2003 (http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2003/0011/latest/DLM187872.html).
