View Full Version : What about a regular weeknight ride/meet? (Ch-ch)
Molly

Saw a group of about six Harleys heading up toward the Christchurch Port Hills this evening. Who could blame them? Bloody nice night for a ride. Bet they're sat outside a pub as we speak (I'm home looking after my wee daughter).
Anyway, who'd be up for a regular, say, Wednesday evening ride / meet?

I'd be keen for a regular cruiser ride. The wednesday night rides SDU mentioned seem to attract 30 to 40 bikes. Too big for me. I'd be happy to do something with a smaller group. I'm always up for a ride too Molly. PM me anytime.
Molly
27th November 2009, 20:27
Cool. I think that's what I was thinking really. Half a dozen or so bikes just heading out for a beer on a nice summer's evening.
No disrespect to the Burger King riders. I did go along to that once if I'm honest but felt like a right spare part. The group that particular night didn't seem very welcoming and just kind of huddled and talked amongst themselves. I waited until they all fired up then just f'ked off for a ride on my billy.

Who is keen for this Wednesday then? Let's just make a time and place to meet.
Molly
28th November 2009, 19:28
OK. Sounds good. I think you're north of the city Rosie? I'm in Huntsbury. We could pick somewhere kind of central I suppose. Somewhere where you can easily keep an eye on the bikes.
Any suggestions? What do you think jimichelle?

28th November 2009, 20:21

My wife suggested the new Coffee Culture in Beckenham or there's always Zero's cafe near PMH.

29th November 2009, 13:52
Just as an idea.
B.B's Cafe at 199 Marshland Rd Shirley Christchurch.
It shares the Bunnings Car Park, so heaps of parking and you can sit out side.
You could park over a 100 bikes.
We, that is SDU and I stop in there at least once a week for a good coffee and the food is good as well.
Now it is Summer we have stopped in there after a ride on the way home as we can keep an eye on the bikes.
Molly
29th November 2009, 19:55
Thanks for that.
Would that cafe in Shirley suit everyone? I'm happy to go there. Looked at the new one in Beckenham and it's actually not that easy to keep an eye on the bikes.
I was about to start discussing a place to go for the ride but maybe we should play that by ear and decide on the night.
Anyway, after settling our wee daughter I'd be able to get there for about 6.45pm. If we said we'd set off about 7pm would that be OK with you? Just a wee, relaxed bibmble, stop for a beer / coffee whatever and maybe loop back. Might be nice to do this whilst we've the light nights and nicer weather.
Cheers.

I have done a bad thing.
I have just checked and BBs closes at 4:30 on a Wednesday.
Strange tho, they answered the phone at 6 O'clock tonight.
Molly
30th November 2009, 18:34
Thanks for checking Larikin. And just to put another fly in the ointment, the joiner I've been trying to get to come and finish the stud work where the chimney used to be has said he'll come Wednesday afternoon... FFS. Anyway, I'm still up for it but apologise in advance if things take longer than expected and I miss it. Will do my very best. Should be OK.
So, we need another venue to meet at I guess since that place is going to be closed. I'm happy to travel out a bit (don't want to seem to be picking places that happen to be local to me) so any suggestions are welcome. That said, Zero's Cafe by PMH is open quite late and there's lots of parking just across the street.
Of course, all welcome. It'd be nice to meet up with a few names from here.

Molly
1st December 2009, 06:13
OK, then we'll say Zero's Cafe just by PMH (think it's called Centaurus Road) in Cashmere.
I'll try to get there at 6.30ish for a 7pm ride. Can't see the joiner working much beyond six.
I'll either be on a green Guzzi or Black Harley Softail.
Cheers.

I gather it's weather dependant? I know the forecast for the next few days isn't brilliant (great summer we're having!). Spose it can be decided closer to the time.
Molly
1st December 2009, 19:28
If it's anything like tonight, we'll just put it off a week.
For the summer at least it'd just be nice if we always knew that there'd be a relaxed ride leaving Zero's Cafe at 7pm so people can show up or not show up as the weather and their mood dictates.
Just moving into my new garage. Compensates somewhat for the shit weather.
ukusa
2nd December 2009, 16:54
I presume this is not on tonight as weather is basically crap. I'm not too worried if it's a little cool, but it's not exactly the nice night with a cold beer in the beer garden type of weather that evryone expects in summer.
Molly
2nd December 2009, 18:39
Figured the weather wasn't really up to it and was working with the joiner until 6.30pm which would've made it all a bit of a rush.
Fingers crossed it's nicer next Wednesday.

Hi.
I'm going down to Zero's Cafe on Centaurus Rd (next to PMH, Cashmere) for about 6.45pm tomorrow. Not sure if I'll be on the Guzzi (hard to get the Harley out of the drive without waking the baby...).
More the merrier! Hope the weather's good.

I understand what you're saying and, no, I didn't just sit on my bike and did try to engage in conversation. Re. the bloke who never approached the group. Did you take the trouble to go over and say hello, introduce yourself, introduce him to a few members? I really hope so. It's pretty shitty to invite people along and leave them feeling uncomfortable. The onus really is on the organisers to make attendees feel welcome; precisely the same etiquette that'd apply if you invited somebody into your home.
Anyway, I'm not going to get into an argument wth you about it. I don't know what your involvement in those rides is but I made an honest observation based on one particular night. It might just be something for you to think about. I suppose once you get to a certain size it's possible for it to become a bit of a clique - not to need to bother with new arrivals - which is largely what's wrong with most established groups. It's unfortunate but it happens.
Take it easy and ride safe.

Hi Molly, hope you're having fun in the cold. I just got back from a week in Picton/Nelson. Took the Thunderbird away on it's first long trip (Mrs tookthe car). Went fantastic. Got bloody soaked coming back through the Lewis today though, but dried out in the nor-wester from Hanmer onwards.
