Intro's to me means that a few chords and I know what is coming

I reckon its a pretty weak song, apart from the lyrics. Infact the only time I like it is when its being covered.

Heavy rock in New Zealand was not acceptable to commercial radio - except Hauraki. It took 10 years before Black Sabbath could be heard on normal radio stations, and even then only as part of rock show. Same for Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, and Deep Purple.

Led Zeppelin had to wait until their 4th (Runes) album to break through. Black Dog and Stairway became mainstream pop hits. They were about the only heavy band to succeed.

Not that it mattered because word got around and the albums sold like hotcakes. No-one into this music took much notice of the radio anyway.

IMHO Paranoid still sounds strong today. Its quite raw compared to modern rock but still an excellent piece of work. Plus it made history. :drool:

Cool, didn't know that. Interesting read. I've always thought Paranoid was one of their weakest songs (apart from Changes, which is the worst) and also they think so too. Ozzy said it was teenybopper, and apparently they wrote the bulk of the song in about 5-10 minutes, as album filler. I find it annoying that this is their signature song when they have so many better songs. I like how Paranoid is easy to play on guitar tho, especially the solo which is pretty good. :woohoo:

Maybe so, but without the Pirate Radio station, it could have been years before Rock and Roll, Heavy metal, would have been heard on the airwaves. It is an interesting story if you can find a copy of the book to read. The hardships and tribulations they went through to bring the Pirate radio, to our shores, is an interesting read.

Yea the pirate radio thing was pretty legendary and I'm sure they were the shit back in the day, but nowdays they are pretty fucken lame.

Most of what they play is uncle music, or some obscure 60s crap that I've never heard before.

I was listening to a doco on Tony Visconti talking about his 1970's work with David Bowie, and particularly how Carlos Alomar got this intro and guitar riff. Basically when it starts its completely unmistakeable, and you are immediately into the song.
