Thinking about ditching the secondaries and replacing the filter with a BMC aftermarket panel jobbie, the bike also has Leo Vince slip-on cans.
Will it need a re-tune? ie: Power Commander V and dyno time etc...
Or would it be plug'n'play?

no i don't think it will not need a retune.

But yes you should retune it really if you can to get the best out of it

Cheers, managed to track down a thread on a US site suggesting one should not remove the flies without a tickle up to go with it.... Ofcourse it was an unprofessional opinion..
Might PM that Triple Z dyno dude and see if he has anything to add..

As I mentioned to you earlier dude, a lotta yank Connie riders are raving about removing the flies but I believe the consensus is a power commander is a good idea. A few threads:

This is how i'm reading it:
1. If removing the flies and or an aftermarket panel air filter you really need a Power Commander (PC) and a re-tune.

2. If using a TRE you get some of the benefit of the fly removal but not all due to the fact the the motor is still under the control of the original ECU and has'nt been re-mapped as per a PC set up and also the gear postition indicator (GPI) shows 6th gear all the time (although an aftermarket GPI can be installed).

So...
1. The no flies/PC set up is ultimate but expensive.

2. The TRE gives some of the advantages and would be plug'n'play and much much cheaper.

Hmm... :wacko: I'd love to put a PC on it cause it opens up other options as well but it's an expensive way to go...

Unless the use of secondary butterflies have changed since I had an 04/05 ZX10R, the secondaries simply smooth the throttle response, most notably in on/off transitions and when snapping the throttle open.

The downside of this is that it makes the bike feel a touch slow when getting on the gas. I used to get the feeling the bike would say, mmmm no, you've asked for a bit too much throttle, I'll give you a bit now, then some more later.

I removed the secondaries, which of course crispened the throttle response.

The downside of removing? Try mid corner leant rather far over, throttle was shut as it was a downhill tight corner. Open the throttle, and all of a sudden you find all the ponies are trying to run out of the engine at once. :laugh:

Certainly made for some interesting corners as the bike would step sideways, tyres not coping. Thought afterwards... mmmm maybe those engineers and all that R&D time has its uses?
