View Full Version : Frame replacement VIN/rules?

What is the situation where I replace the bike frame with another frame from a deregistered (insurance writeoff) bike? There are no damage marks on the frame.
Basically, I have a perfectly road-legal bike, and I can buy a bare frame that is in really clean condition. It will be cheaper than repainting the scruffy one, and it will look better.
I don't think I should be swapping VIN plates around - not legal? Would get failed at WOF time?
Any suggestions?
thanks,
Steve

Wouldn't you need to get it re-certified (which would require an engineer's report)?

DB sorry dude you have a problem. You cant legally just swap frames. It goes back to the fact that for simplicity a bike is concidered to be a two wheeled car. As such the frame is the chasis which is deemed as being "the car'.
Something else to concider-the doner frame is from a wright off. Do you know for certain its not bent?

Who ever knows if anything is straight? Even the certifying engineer only does his best, and his report comes with a disclaimer as well.
Looks like a re-vin.
Thanks people.

Yup, just a re-vin. It's not too expensive, and if you follow the process from start to finish you'll get a VIN/WOF/3 months rego/plate all at the same time. If you want to fit a larger engine, do it before the revin, as it'll only add around $350 for the certification certificate to the total bill.
