ANZAC commemoration, Gallipoli

Absolutely nothing to do with biking - Jennie and I got quite a shock last night!

The attachment is a photo from the front page of yesterday’s NZ Herald. It was taken at Gallipoli on Monday at the ANZAC remembrance service. Bottom right hand corner, sleeping figure in blue hooded anorak, probably pissed. Imagine our surprise when reading the paper last night over a cup of tea to discover one Kerryn James, No 2 son! We knew he wanted to attend the service but to see him there was quite a surprise! I suppose that we’ll hear from him in due course when he needs more money :laugh:

Nice to see young 'uns going over for the right reasons.

Cool. Would love to be there on ANZAC day someday, but from the looks of it the big day itself is way too busy.

Minor rant, but I couldn't believe that the people who went there to pay their respects would leave the place looking like a rubbish tip. Shows a complete lack of respect.

Someday I hope to make it over to attend the gallipoli service, of all the things to do and see in the world, this is one of my top two.

The other is to see the Edinburugh military tattoo in scotland. Saw it when it came to Wellington a few years back and it was absolutely amazing. To see it in scotland can only be better imo. Also an absolute must if you love the sound of bagpipes.. the sound of the massed pipes is just incrediably beautiful.

I couldn't believe that so many interviewed didn't have a clue of what Gallipoli was about.
One was asked, "who won"? She said, "we did". Which isn't quite correct.
I wonder if there's a little bit of 'grief tourism' happening there.

Having been there in 1999 it was amazing, there were only 7000 of us that year. No one was allowed to stay on the Beach back then so there was little mess, but had to catch the bus at 1am to get there on time.

I would say to anyone if your in Europe around that time you have to go, it's such a moving experiance and leave's a lasting impression. Make's you think about what other's gave up for us.
