Who has riden both wires and karapoti and can comment on the difficulty level of the 2 areas, which has the tougher rock garden etc.

I'd say wires, but they are pretty similar. And it was 1995 when I rode Karapoti.

Id be forgetting about it for a while
I heard that theres a mining company going in for a massive operation. It isnt really suitable for riding there at the moment anyway, it needs some work done to it.

IMHO wires, far more challanging and fun also
and it pays not to ride it alone, beats going to the gym

I dunno mate, Kez, myself and a few mates have spent a coupla years going into and around Karipoti (just a newbie really) on a fairly regular basis and there are some places in there that you just dont go on your own. The bogs and ruts of wires are very much prevelant in places like the link track, the 24 hour loop and the rollercoaster track. These runs are just plain vicious and I wouldn't take anyone who hasn't got much off road experience into those particular parts. The riding area is a couple of hundred square kilometers in size, probably more and if you go further south toward battle hill etc then thats a whole new kettle of fish again. It's where Rory Meade spends most of his time training.. The 4wd guys keep the main arterials fairly clear, but the dirt bike loops range from mildly greasy to just plain hardcore ridiculous :woohoo:
The rock garden is cool for training and the devils staircase can be a bit of a hoot as well. Further south of the area (~20k) you will stumble across old enduro loops and lots of greasy climbs and big step ups. Plenty of singletrack, you will never get bored in there there is always something new to discover.
There is an area adjacent to Karipoti called rallywoods, this is about 15,000 acres of native and pine forest where Landrover UK used to do all their driver training back in the 70's. Some challenging stuff there as well. Rallywoods runs between moonshine valley and Totara park. There is an MX track at the bottom of the road leading up to Rallywoods.
Im glad I live 5 minutes away from all that. Still in aussie for now but :crybaby:

They are in there doing sample drilling- It will be years - if ever - till they get the go ahead to plunder it. then, yes, they will build a super highway in there and we may lose access.

try going UP the staircase... pretty damn hard. Would love to show ya some of the meaner stuff in karapoti pornstar. One we call the MTB track is wicked to go down... haven't tried up. also one we re cut called siberia which the forrestry people have now re-covered with pine prunings. then as secondfiddle said the 24 hour track (named that as that's how long it can take the 4wds to get through). Gearbox track (have met rory mead in here before) There's many many more too. Puketiro forrest next door is very easy to get into and has heaps of tracks which reminds me... The Zig Zag is wicked hard over that side

I can vouch for that, its a bitch, did it for the first time last month having only been out there on a mountain bike (which you pick up and carry) before. Small near vertical rocky banks in some places (one is a particular beyatch)....and you're already going up a steep, rocky, metre deep rut infested slippery hill....getting the sudden momentum to jump up a small rock face is no small feat when you are already stuggling for grip and trying not to fall into a rut (chasm)....if you can get up there without stopping or stalling I reckon your name is either Rory Meade or his apprentice.
Needless to say I stalled plenty....

im keen kezza to do some loops kezza, the last time i was in there, i got a bit lost, part way through the rock garden after the stream crossings, i went left not right, what a mother ride, killer uphill, finally came out at top of staircase i think, was pretty overgrown, then straight into rollercoaster.
