Well just had the Burt Munro Challenge in the weekend.
I had been looking forward to this weekend for quite a while as my lap times at Teretonga had been very competitive for a motard.
Practise / qualifying went well and I scrubbed in a new set of Metzelers, K1 front and K2 rear.
I felt like I was going alright but I wasn't at 100% yet, I ended up qualifying 2nd, which I was pretty happy with.
Race 1
I got swamped off the start line and was 5th into turn 1, I went up the inside of one guy on the next turn which put me in 4th behind Mitch Rowe.
Next lap I had a massive drag race down the long straight right beside Mitch and our bikes were so even.
I decided since I was on the inside I wasn't going to brake until he did.
Well we shot past the 100m board at full noise not even thinking about braking, the then 50 came up fast and Mitch hadn't backed off, so neither did I.
He finally braked and I thought thank god for that, I ran in a little hot but pulled it in alright, that's the fastest I had ever hit that corner for sure.
I was now in 3rd and was pushing hard and catching 2nd place.
Came on to the straight and my bike coughed a bit, I thought you idiot im out of gas, I flicked it to reserve but still no go.
I pulled into pits and a guy came running up to me and said I was leaking fuel, my bloody fuel line had came off.
I put it back on but by that time I was half a lap down on the whole field but I finished and got 2 points.
Race 2
I had checked and double checked my fuel line and there was no way it was coming off this time.
I got a better start and was 3rd behind Mitch into turn 1, decided I wanted to win this time so I went on the gas all the way round the outside of him and got right behind the leader.
I was with him for the whole time until we hit the straight, I don't know how much power his KTM had but I would say it was around 10hp more that me.
He pulled a big gap, but into turn 1 I was catching under brakes and I went as fast as I could around the massive loop and was right behind him again.
Then my bike sounded really really loud, I was looking down trying to see if I could see anything.
My bike was loud as and it was running like crap, after a few corners I had spotted the problem, my header pipe had broken in half.
I came onto the straight still in 2nd but I had bugger all power and got passed by 2 bikes.
I went around one guy at turn one but the next small straight I got passed back.
I got passed again by another 2 bikes on the straight again and I ended up finishing 6th.
So not a good day at the office for me, but a busy night ahead getting everything sorted for the street race the next day.
Wydham Street Race
My bike was fixed and was running good.
I knew I couldn't make up for my poor results from Teretonga but was going to try.
Practise / qualifying was hard as it was slightly wet and very slippery but was drying fast.
I went out on wets which wasn't a good idea, by the time we did one lap it was almost completely dry.
I qualified 7th which was ok.
Race 1
An average start had me fighting with heaps of guys just to hold my starting position.
I got passed a couple and was fighting with Nigel Curtis, he's the guy who only has one arm but he is really fast.
I ended up 7th.
Race 2
I decided if I wanted to do well I had to be more aggressive, so I got a reasonable start and was 7th into turn one.
2nd lap into turn one I took Nigel on the inside with my best ever sliding pass.
I caught up to the next guy and on the next lap he ran slightly wide on one corner so I made my move and passed him down the straight and into the chicane.
This left me in 5th and I was pulling away from the 2 I had passed but had a big gap to 4th over the finish line.
Race 3
Last race of the day, I decided if I can get into 5th early I might be able to keep up with the leaders.
I got my worst start of the day and was back in about 9th, I couldn't get passed this one guy who always held me up coming into the chicane.
Lap 2 I decided to go for the ballsy pass into the chicane, I came around the inside and he slid slightly my way which pushed me inside too much.
I was going to hit the bails, so I locked it up and had the bike really sideways but still couldn't get round the bails.
I went slamming into them and from then I don't really know what happened, but I ended up against the other side of the track with myself and the bike facing the other direction??
I couldn't move to start with and lay there in a wee ball feeling really sore, the race got red flagged.
I eventually managed to get up, had a wee walk around and was feeling surprisingly alright.
I walked over to my bike, had a look at it and it all seemed ok, it even started after a while.
So I got on and rode around the corner, my forks had twisted in the clamps so I went over to a bail and whacked them until they were straight.
Race was to be restarted, I thought to myself 'am I ok to race'?
Yeah I should be fine.
So I rejoined on the line, didn't launch that well though and I realised I had over straightened my bars and now they were twisted the other way.
Very non aggressive race but I did finish 7th.
I ended up 5th overall so I was glad I did race but I am off to the doc's today to be checked out.
Really happy with the K2 rear slicks, they don't cut as like the K1's do and they still have plenty of grip.
Next racing will be at Manfeild on the 19th, then Wanganui on the 26th, Taupo on the 27th and 28th then back to Nelson for the 2nd Jan.
Going to be a pretty good xmas I hope.
I am hoping to find some footage of my crash, hopefully some one got it cos i wanna see what happend.
