The funny thing is that he says if you look at pictures of Susan Boyle you can see the signs that she's "retarded". I must say the picture of him on Stuff's homepage accompanying the article makes him look a little suspect too.....

I delivery his mail. Nice house with a good view :)

He likes a larf on TV and don't we all.

He's very funny for what should be a serious presentation.

BUT he does go a bit too near the bone at times.

Susan Boyle is unlikely to ever hear his comments.

The moustache lady more than likely did and would have every right to feel publicly humiliated.

He can be a bit of a prat at times however on the whole, he's good value.

First of all.... he is being judged all the time. We are judging him right now !!! Thats what being famous is all about, people judge you and say unkind things about you but, hell.... thats life. Its the same with all celebrities, Susan Boyle included. Its not the worst thing people have said about her and it won't be the last...... oh, and its "inconsiderate"

Good on Paul Henry for not following all this new PC bullshit. Kinda shit that he picked on people that can't really fight back tho.. :bash:

I tend to refer to the things people do as retarded rather than them being retarded, however if they are constantly do stupid shit then maybe they are a retard. I call myself retarded when I do stupid things. I try not to call people who are actually mentally challenged or who have 'special needs' retarded though, it's not their fault they are the way they are. I guess it depends what power you give to a word and the images you link to it. I can think of worse things to call people.
I think PH is funny, he says things to wind people up and get a bite, and bite they do, much to his delight I'm sure!

Vern
30th November 2009, 17:53
Hey even if she is a bit retarded it is not her fault and although they don't want anyone's sympathy, I think it is very disrespectful of someone to spout out that sort of thing for every one to hear. He is entitled to his own opinion but there are somethings he should keep to himself and that sort of thing does not impress me at all. Vern

That's actually a fascinating point that you raised because the answer is actually a social one. "Idiot" used to be a medically defined termed. Then, funnily enough, people started using it to label others (that did not medically match the criteria). Same with spastic. Same with retard/retarded.

I guess my grandkids will be called each other "disabled" in the playground and society will have to come up with a new word.

Can't stand the guy. He goes out of his way to say stupid things to make himself the center of attention. He's the reason I have 'Breakfast' on in the morning instead of just the radio. He entertains me and while he goes a bit close to the line on a weekly basis, he is an intelligent guy who will challenge the people he interviews if they talk shit. I appreciate that.

FWIW, he didn't make comments about moustache lady, he merely read what other people had said and commented that people should not apply their own standards to other people. (he did have a wee twinkle in his eye as he read the comments though...).

My friends visited from England last year and Had a dollop of Mr Henry each morning of their stay.

Now when we talk on the phone they almost always ask what he's been up to lately. They were fascinated, as were we, when we first came over, by what he gets away with on TV. Some of it is offensive I suppose but coming from a country where everything is dumbed down and anally PC on the Telly, it's quite refreshing and funny to see some one allowed to speak their mind.

Some of you may not like it and want to reign him in because he steps over the line a bit and offends some people, (personally I don't think his attitude to bikers is great) but be careful what you wish for folks, the opposite of Paul Henry is 24 hour TV where no one ever gets to say anything that doesn't toe the line of the nanny state and no one ever points a finger in the direction of corrupt politicians and the like for fear of falling foul of the 'rules'.

Everything and every one is fair game for a Henry pisstake including himself and his Mom, the price of that is sometimes stepping over the line and offending some people but if someone didn't push the boundaries As he does we'd all be watching a bunch Matty Mcleans all the time, bugger that.

Paul Henry makes a comment that many people would think, and he is criticized for it. I suppose no one here has ever made an offensive comment about anyone before? Most of the time it is behind their backs (or to their KB name) anyway. While I am not a Paul Henry fan, at least he was honest enough to say what he was thinking.

I thought the column was excellent but some of the comments were obviously made by people who live sheltered lives.

It would seem to me lately that people have decided that they are going to use the phrase "PC" to justify saying anything rude or offensive without feeling any guilt at all. The more demoralising bit is the number of people who think being offensive in ALL situations is just funny.

In my mind there are three levels: pc, normal and offensive. As an example, to a "pc" person, another person might be called vertically challenged, a normal person might call them short and an offensive person might call them a ratty midget etc.

Based on that example I am all for not being "pc" but I would also not choose the offensive line either.

Obviously Henry never heard of the concept that once you become an example to others, there also comes a responsibility to make sure you're a good example.

</end rant>

TVNZ upholds complaints about Henry's 'retarded' crack

TVNZ has upheld complaints about Breakfast presenter Paul Henry's description of singer Susan Boyle as "retarded".

The broadcaster's complaints committee upheld the complaints about the remarks made on November 23, on the grounds of good taste and decency.

Complaints relating to other standards under the Free to Air Television Code of Broadcasting Practice were not upheld.

The complaint was laid after Henry quoted from a magazine article that said Boyle suffered a mild intellectual impairment.

He then joked about it and said that she was "retarded".

TVNZ said Henry told the committee in a statement that he never intended to offend people with disabilities.

"I am sorry that some people have taken what I said in a way that I never intended," he said.

"In fact, I have a great amount of respect for people who rise to the challenges imposed on them in life. The amount of support and coverage I, and the programmes I'm associated with, give to these issues is evidence of the commitment we have to these people, their families and friends."

However, the committee said the language used would have caused offence to a significant number of users and breached the relevant standard.

"There is a legitimate place for Paul Henry's boundary-pushing style and sense of humour in broadcasting," TVNZ news and current affairs head Anthony Flannery said.

"It should also be remembered that in 600 hours of live television each year there have been very few times when he has overstepped the mark.

"However, we acknowledge that this was one such occasion, and we apologise to those who were hurt and distressed by it."

I stopped listening to radio in mornings as the self serving hosts pissed me off and now watch the PH show most mornings. I have yet to be offended. If the show was PC I wouldn't watch it.

This statement amuses me:
"However, the committee said the language used would have caused offence to a significant number of users and breached the relevant standard." I doubt if the people who would be offended would watch the PH show - so there, is anyone offended by that?

Loved that show when he used to destroy the hostess of the show. Some Lady called Dawson.

Intersting comments by Henry on this.

1 He's sorry not for what he has said but for the way other people

2 who have taken in a way (what Henry said) that I never intended. (So how do you call someone a retard in a way that they are not a retard?? )

Jeez I consider myself pretty good with words but that's got me stumped.

As for the second para all that needs to be said is................ moustache .

If she never knows - she'll never care.

How is what Paul Henry said ever REALLY going to affect her??
Probably no more than calling you skinny would affect you.

(Not saying what he said is what I would have said or particularly agree with - just being Devils Advocate here..:devil2:)

She's probably richer than Henry now. Would be nice to tell him??
