I would agree (assuming you stick to the posted legal limit), in that the biggest impact will be the skill of the rider, not the performance of the bike.

if you were putting same manufacture 600's against 1000's i think the biggest difference would be between the kawasakis.
honda suzuki and yamaha would all be pretty close.

It's pretty much down to personal preference. I'd say a lot of people (myself included) would be faster in general on a 600 than a thou because you can nail it harder through corners without worrying so much about the torque biting you in the arse.
As others have said, as long as there aren't too many straights a 600 should keep up OK if the rider's onto it. There's pretty much nothing between them in the handling department these days - the days of a 1000cc bike being a big heavy lump are long gone. The only things that make much difference between the classes is the power and how it's delivered.
I'd say the rider's going to make more difference

The big difference between a 600 and a 1,000 on open roads is that when you come around a sweeper on your litre bike in top at say 120 and then hit the straight, you simply wind open the throttle and watch the speedo jump up to 200+ real quick without the bike even breaking a sweat. (A totally effortless jump). Meanwhile, your mate behind you on his 600 will be forced to drop down and wring the little bike's neck to keep up.
Mind you, good rider on a 600 will be all over a 1,000 in the hills 'cause a 600 handles like a fly and just loves the tight, nasty shit.

The guy that built the P3 GSX-R600 (http://londonbikers.com/news/10702/witness-the-p3-suzuki-gsxr600-k8-superlite) hangs out in the Gixxer forums and has said that if he built a 1000 to the same level it would need seriously expensive traction control and that the traction control will be active most of the time anyhow so it kind of defeats the purpose of having all that horsepower in the first place. Basically he couldn't build a 1000 to go any quicker around Nurburgring unless it was practically a WSB machine.

My 1000 is a lot quicker around the Coromandel than my 600 was... I too thought 600'ds were faster than 1000's but that is relative I suppose. New 1000cc bikes these days weigh a few kg more than a 600 and have double the power so go figure.

Interesting to see how close the stock bikes were to the Enzo Ferrari - pretty exotic cage.
I think the 600s would rule on a twistie road (riders being equal) regardless of similarities in weight until 1000s start coming with traction control as standard so you can wind it on without the fear of a high side.

fuck man, Have you ever wound it on hard with sticky tyres? Only a moron would not use decent tyres on their 1000! You need to be pretty near knee down or pretty near full gas to get any slide happening? (test bike was a 05 CBR1000 on pilot powers)

Stop pretending 1000 cc bikes have "too much power" and "need traction control", cut the rear loose etc. While this may have a small element of truth to it, all you have to do on a 1000 cc bike is not act like a fuckwit and you can ride it fast around corners. Fast enough to touch the pegs on the ground. Good Tyres also inpoetand. And don't do stupid shit like pin the throttle mid corner and you'll be fine.

With a skilled rider on both bikes, the 1000 will always be faster.
There is a limit to how fast you can ride on the road before you wind up dead though, and either bike is more than capable of exceeding the sensible limit.

105 ish at the rear wheel with a very linear power curve. The more you let it wind out the harder it goes. It is way more enjoyable to ride than the SV1000 i had before. Staying in top gear and just twisting the throttle got kind of boring.
And as a bonus the 600 is easier on petrol and rear tyres. I love it as a road bike in its own right.

The only thing making a bike go fast is the rider.
Frosty on an old XJ900 would lead rides where guys on the latest machinery wouldn't feel slow.
Warr on a 1984 Yamaha FJ900 would keep guys like the legendary Loosebruce on gixxer thous in sight - not side by side - but in sight. Bruce was one of the fastest public riders in the country without a doubt.
Goblin on a piece of shit ZXR400 would keep up with guys on machines twice as fast.
Sujilite would turn up on a 1989 ZXR750 with dodgy forks and dissappear almost a minute infront of anyone.
Motoracer and Two Smoker on RG150's would overtake litre bikes on the outside of corners.
Yaya - I know your turbo, NOS Hayabusa can do 400kmph - Can you???

105 at the rear wheel? on a 750? is it because ur a fat arse? It should be putting out 120 + at the wheel stock standard. My 600 was putting out 120 with only slight mods.

I think the 1000 cc vs 600 cc argument comes from the times of 1991 Yamaha FZR1000 vs a 1991 Yamaha FZR600.
Times have changed now and the difference between a GSXR1000 K9 and a GSXR600 K9, in terms of agility and manuvrability is not much. Sure the pistons are larger or smaller and that means turning the bike over from one side to another requires greater or lesser time/force due to inertia of the masses of the moving parts but this calcualtion can be left only for the track.
IMHO, on a nicely varried section of road with tight corners and some straight bits, the 1000cc will take it out with a skilled enough rider to do the comparison between the two bikes. If the rider is not skilled enough to push a 1000 then 600 could be faster.

Aaaaaah, good ol' "small bike syndrome". If they're fast it's all down to the riders skill, if they're slow it's 'cos they've got a small bike. Typical blather from folks with something to prove.

Gonna have to agree.
The other side to the coin though is
Equal riders, except for the top 1-2%, the thous gonna kick butt. They're just much easier to ride fast. (not necessarily well though)

Or folks who understand the difference in torque put out by a 1000 compared to a 600.
