It's about time to retire my old Arai helmet. It's been very faithful, but after a wee spill, I managed to scratch the scratch proof (or is that resistant) visor. I was quoted $160 for a new visor :shit: so thought bugger it. New helmet time.

I'm a stronge believer in the "you get whet you pay for" moto, so I'm looking for something mid range of $400 - $700. (Any prices here are only indications, and may vary). There are only really 3 stipulations, it must have a removable lineing (man I can sweat), black is my favoured colour, and...... oh yeah, I'd like it to save my head in a crash.

I'm after any advice from people who have tried some of these helmets, or have anything useful to say (or useless, it doesn't really bother me).

The Arai X3 is probably the ultimate adv helmet. $1049 (+ $200 if you want to look like Ewan and Charlie). A wee bit out of my price range. I have a family and mortgage.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35996

Shoei Hornet $999 (I've been offered one of these a LOT cheaper)

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35995

Rjays Dakar $249 (not fussed on the fighter pilot look)

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35992

HJC CL-XS $229 (looks like a good helmet for not much more than an Arai visor, but a bit ugly)

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35990

Are there any I'm missing. There must be more adventure helmets out there. These are all above or below my price range also.

What advantages do adventure style helmets have over road helmets. It's not often that I've thought 'I wish I had a peak'. I can understand the ventilation thing with the chin piece.

Also, how do the visors for these things compare. Being quite different to road visors, are they much more expensive?

I'll run through some road helmet options later.

As for road options, there's heaps. Here are some I kind of like:

Arai Chaser - Base model Arai $899. I really liked my last one, but I'm put off by the price of the visor ($160). Would buy another one if I was doing serious road work.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35988

Shoei Raid 2 - Real good mid range helmet at $549

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35994

Shark RSF3 - $549. some of my mates swear by Shark helmets.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35993

HJC FS-10 ($769) and HQ1 ($699) - Carbon jobs. I like the look of these, and the price. Looks like great value for money.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35989

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35991

AGV Stealth ($649) - Love this........but I'd have to buy an R1 to go with it. Might look a bit silly on a DR650. I've had a good run out of an AGV in the past.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2881&pictureid=35987

Your thoughts....

edit: I've missed out open face and flip front jobs because I gave up smoking years ago.

shoei or arai only bro!
rest are all shit, you jsut have to find what head you have to what brand you get. i have a shoei head, which is good because there road helmets are sexy.

The Shoei Hornet has had a huge jump in price since I've bought mine. Paid $630 and now they want $999. I wonder why? Can't be the exchange rate.

Love mine though. It's very comfortable, reasonably light and the pin lock visor works as advertised.

Do you REEEALy need to spend all that coin on a helmet ? After all, 1 good knock and you should replace it anyway.
My $250 LS2 is more comfortable than the $800 shoei I tried on

I have a Hornet and its not bad at all. Light weight and excellent vents. The visor fits perfectly. I would guess that the Arai would be totally comparable. Those would be my choices.

I went with the try em on and pick the one that feels best.
I ended up with a BMW Enduro helmet which was around the ($900 mark).

The major benefit with the dual sport style helmets is the visibility, periferal vision is far better with the ones I have experienced.
Infact when I use my road helmet (AGV S4, similar to the stealth you have pictured) it feels very restrictive and the chin part is much larger and visibility towards the front wheel is pretty restricted, where the curved mx shape of a dual sport helmet gives much better visibility.

Another cheap option to consider is the AFX FX37ds. I got one imported from the USA for my brother for about $200nzd

I have been thinking of a peaked helmet with visor too. My Caberg has an internal sun visor which is brilliant but I do get a bit of buffeting at higher speeds, obviously not the helmets fault. Other TDM owners with the same problem have said a peaked helmet stops the buffeting, also, when you tip your head down, the peak goes a long way to minimise sun strike.

webBikeWorld has some really good helmet info, start at: Motorcycle Helmet FAQs (http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/motorcycle-helmet-faq.htm).

There is more to a helmet than just its safety rating, but I specifically bought a Hornet that met the ECE 22.05 standard, because in my mind this standard makes the most sense. I could have bought the same helmet with a Snell rating.

I see it like this, no helmet will be perfect for every situation. However, any helmet that I buy will have to fit me, be light, have good ventilation, a wide field of view, have an interior that doesn't upset my sensitive skin and lastly, look good to me. I will buy the helmet that comes closest to this ideal, at a price I can afford.

I'd love one of those super light carbon helmets that's not black, but so far, that's where I've drawn the line.

Thankfully there are lots of helmets out there, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one you like. I wouldn't be put off If my ideal helmet was also cheap. At the same time I am quite happy to pay more for one that looks good to me.

The next thing I'll have to look at is one of those neck braces. As a relatively clumsy rider it's easy to justify spending money on gear that works.

I know what you mean. The guy in the shop said a modern $200 helmet has more features and may be safer than what $1000 helmets were 10 years ago.

For me it's a peace of mind thing. You want to know you're wearing something that's going to give you the best chance of survival if the shit does hit the fan.

I talked to a helmet design engineer in the late eighties about cost and performance. (He had been designing them for many years).
Bottom line is, almost all helmets will withstand any impact that cause brain damage, but other injuries like broken neck/spinal cord etc cannot be prevented.
You pay top price for Arai/Shoei/Bell etc, because they constantly redesign, and that swallows huge amounts of R+D funds.
I own Arai, Shoei, Nolan, Grex, and several others. They all do exactly the same job..............restrict my peripheral vision,:shifty:, but do stop the rain stinging my eyes, and the road shaving flesh off my bonce if/when I have an accident.
Find one you feel most comfortable with, and wear it.................most of the time.

There is more to a helmet than just its safety rating,Yes - hence my caveat. wBW goes in to those other factors. Fit is very important.

For me it's a peace of mind thing. You want to know you're wearing something that's going to give you the best chance of survival if the shit does hit the fan.In that regard, a new $200 helmet every year will offer more protection than one $1000 helmet every 5 years due to both technology improvements in the new ones, and gradual deterioration of the old helmet.

Remember a polycarbonate shell only lasts what, 3 years? and a fibreglass one 5. Thermoplastic less than 3, innit?

I have the Zeus.

Pros:
Price, of course
Comfortable
Not too noisy
Peak works well and is adjustable

Cons:
Slightly les periferal vision that my Arai road helmet
The lining hasn't lasted that well, on a really hot day in the Waikato some of the vinyl split.

While Arai make the most comfortable helmets I've ever worn, the amount of noise they create far outweighs any other benefits they may have. I can only just bear to ride around town without plugs in my Arai.

I've got an Airoh S4 as my adv helmet, bought if off Ebay for under $400. Its lighter but noisier compared to my Shoei RF1000 road lid. Noise is pretty bad with the visor open and going >50km/h without ear plugs, but its fine for low speed trail riding.

I am in the mkt for a new helmet too.

I definitely want a peak this time around. Riding in the MMMMM highlighted the importance of that for me (winter low sun - couldn't see squat). Want to be able to wear googles as an option to using just the visor. Want good airflow, but also the capacity to drop this back (in winter). Comfort is important to me. The pinlock visors are attractive for anti-fogging. I want a decent anti scratch visor. I really like the ability of my current Shoei Road Helmet to pop off the visor for a clean, then to quickly snap back on, but am not aware of any adventure helmets that can do this.

Guess I am talking myself into an up market helmet, like Arai, or Shoei. Other options I haven't properly investigated (because they don't have a ready dealership handy) are: Airoh, BMW Enduro.

I'm aware that on a cost / performance basis some of the cheaper helmets may make good sense, especially from a regular replacement view point (my last road helmet is nrly a decade old). I tried a Zeus (in my normal XL size). No way near fitting - too small. This has been common in some of the cheaper helmets I have looked at. The padding on some on some feels cheap too. I guess that's why they are cheap. Have a chat to EddieB. His Zeus was starting to wear badly after 12 mths use. So comes down to that quality conversation again

Thanks for the feedback guys. Lots of interesting info. Keep it coming.

I'll have to double check that price on the Shoei Hornet. I'm sure they must be cheaper than $999.

That's a good point about buying a cheap new one every other year. Our helmets (well mine anyway) do get a hammering. I've got an old AGV that I still use when commuting. I think it's 16 years old. My mate ran it over with his car one day. Might be about time to throw that one away.

I have the Arai XD and the Shoei Hornet.
Both great helmets, good fit and finish - but my favourite is the Shoei.

Why?
The pinlock visor and the fact that I have a Shoei Head.
Shoei's just happen to fit me better'n Arai's.

Oh, and to rehash a previous thread - the peak: The Arai is annoying at speed, but works when needed. The Shoei doesn't have a problem at speed, but the peak is decoration unless the sun is directly overhead.

I agree with Oscar the Shoei's peak does nothing except look trailbike cool. But the venting is really useful & I am always adjusting them on the move. Replacement visors & pinlocks are expensive to replace. I believe you can use small googles with them.

And use normal goggles in Arai but can't close the chin vent?

The main thing with the Zeus 2100b is that it's a road helmet (2100) with a peak.

For some that's a negative but for others it's a plus.

Those who normally wear a road helmet adventuring may really like it.

The peak works really well too.

I’ve been through a Grex RD, Airoh S4 and Shoei Hornet in the past 3 years. The RD1 was uncomfortable and didn't vent well (Road helmet converted really). The S4 fitted OK but not brilliantly, was very noisy (air leaked around visor and whistled) OK air flow but not adjustable. Hornet is the bees knees for me. It has good air flow (I wear glasses so being able to defog without getting glasses wet is important and no I don’t use the pinlock - too lasy to put it in), the ram style air vent on the peak is awesome on hot days - works brilliantly, fit is bloody awesome, visor seals well when necessary, peak isn't the greatest for blocking sun/roost etc but is better than nothing and doesn’t catch the wind. I got mine for about $600 so significantly cheaper than the X3. The liner is removalable and it comes in a range of colours (light colours for me the RD1 was a black oven). I'd definitely get another Hornet.

Good info here, I have the Shoei head but would rather have a peak that works, not having one is a real pain in the arse, after I finish spending gazillions on the bike I will have to buy a helmet....I'm trying the off road helmet this weekend on an adventure ride so my opinion will be swinging one way or the other after that, goggles and rain!

Interesting about the Airoh, I was reccomended that by someone with brains so it was on my list to look at, but if it's noisy I'm not interested.

Shoei Hornet DS Sonora (black/grey, just like yours Steve)

Everyone here seem pleased with theirs, so I thought they must be good.

Bike shop in Napier has had one sitting around for a while. They got it in for a guy but it didn't fit. Managed to get it for cost + 'FA' of $650. RRP is currently $999 for the Sonora model (the pretty painted one). Big ups to Fivestar Suzuki.

I was tempted to go for a road helmet, particularly the HJC carbon job. The big selling point for the Hornet is the amount of vision you get. It's important when blasting down windy gravel roads to see that suicidal sheep jump off the bank beside you. Peripheral vision is very good with this helmet.

The other selling point is the ventilation. It looks to have ample vents for a sweaty dude like me. I don't think road helmets are quite as good in this department.

I'm unsure about the peak. I think it's only there for looks.

It seems to be a comfortable helmet and I can't wait to try it out on the bike.

The only downer is........$160 for a replacement visor. Back to square one if I scratch it. :nono:

Thanks for all your input guys. I hope this thread becomes a useful tool for others looking at adventure helmets.

Nice one Bart! I really liked my Shoei Hornet DS - low wind noise, good ventilation(it never steamed up once!) BUT it did lift my head at speed much more easily than my Arai Tour X3 does - I think the airflow through the peak thingy is better on the Arai. Apart from that definitely no complaints AND it probably saved me from very serious head injuries or worse last Easter Sunday on Orongorongo! Bloody good helmet mate, hope you enjoy it!

Know what you mean! The only reason i got the Arai was cos the insurance paid for replacement of my Hornet after my accident so my Arai cost me less than the Hornet cash out of my pocket wise, otherwise i would definitely have just gone for another Hornet! TBH the Hornet was more comfortable fit-wise than the Arai, which is very snug on your cheeks to say the least!

First impressions for mine were very good. The vents have an appreciable impact, especially if it cooler outside & you are sweating. I've taken off the chin breath guard to improve ventilation around the face. This will be good in the cooler months however. I found the visor on my last Shoei v.scratch resistant, so am not anticipating having to replace this. I will take off the pinlock antifog for the summer, and that seems to be something that may scratch up. The liner unclips, which means it can be cleaned - something most road helmets doesn't allow. Downsides - minor & expected. The peak does catch the wind a bit on a gusty day. Don't know what it would be like at speed.

make sure the plastic screws are done up tight. I've lost two out of there. Good idea about taking the pin-lock out, I hadn't even considered it. I often ride with the visor open and dust gets to it. You also have to be careful that the peak is right back, otherwise it can scratch the visor.

The hole in the front of the hornet is much bigger than the hole in the front of my road Arai. I'll get the tape measure out.....

bart
14th December 2009, 21:31
Well..........I lined up all my helmets, and there wasn't much in it. They all have pretty much the same size hole. The shape varies a wee bit, so you get a bit more up/down view, but the side/side view is virtualy the same.

I'll start eating my hat now. :second:

While I haven't measured it i have noticed that my Zeus either has a narrower opening or a different shape that effectively gives you less peripheral vision than my Arai road lid.

25th March 2010, 17:07
Just starting this one up again...
In the market for a new lid, peak and visor type this time. Using my 661 mx lid and goggles is no good on the road. Loud and catches too much wind.
Cant afford a Shoei or Arai, I already have 2 road arai's and love them for road stuff, but too bulky and no peak for off road stuff.
I have tried the HJC - hated it, because the visor distorts your view around the nose guard area, giving me a headache after a while - like wearing someone elses glasses!. The visor wont lift right up either - very annoying!
Looks like the airoh may have the distortion issue as well as the visor has a sharp bend around the nose guard/chin bar bit?
Cant stand the look of the zeus, I know, I'm vain!
Anybody had any experience of the Rjays lid? Looks quite good, and the extender peak thingy may be useful...or may break the first time I use it!
HELP!!!

Yeah. I bought 1 cheap at city Honda 1 year birthday bash just over $100 if I remember correctly. I haven't used it much yet but Slow speed good, comfortable yes, air flow good, visor is best left down as it doesn't go completely up out of the way. High speed it catch's the wind but I am picking that all peaked helmets will do that just a matter of getting used to it. Other thing I must have been spoilt with with the BMW helmets is sun burn never used sunscreen in my helmet horrible sticky stuff but would need to with this as there is no protection with the visor I think BMW visiors reduce something like 98 Percent UVA & UVB rays So looks like the next investment will have to be in a BMW Adventure helmet.

26th March 2010, 15:01
Thanks for the info.
Yes I think the peak issue with wind is just a given, keep head down a bit and slow down into headwinds!
Seems that lifting the visor is an issue with the cheaper adv helmets... the HJC looked like it could be solved by cutting some plastic off the peak in the centre where it meets the helmet. Knowing my luck it would the start some strange venturi effect and suck the snot out my nose and into my eyes!:shit:, or start whistling at 120db at any speed over 20km!
Good that there is no distortion when looking through the visor though, I found that a huge issue with the HJC, and some weird hedgerow reflections that only stopped when I put my hands by my ears!:blink: bizarre!
Anyway:shutup:
Just need to know if the Rjay Dakar is any good now as thats my other option... One on Tard me, my size, finishes in a few hours...

i talked to a mate on here who had both the matrix and the zues, the zues was more road going where the matrix was a little lighter more noise and air flow. i think i would prefer the matrix more now im on the XR where the Zuess was perfect for the riding i did on the BIG.

I prefer my Zeus over my Grex, mainly because of better air flow to reduce fogging.
The Zeus is surprisingly stable at high speeds too, well tested on Saturday when I rode a borrowed GSX1200 on the Coro loop (thanks again rogson). I probably looked a dork wearing an adv helmet on a naked sports bike but the peak sure was a blessing when riding back to Auckland into the low sun.

Fair to say my Shoei Hornet flows a lot more air than my Road Shoei. For that alone, Reofix's comments don't fly for me. Maybe we are doing somewhat different rides. If I was just doing gravel, then maybe that would stack...

The peak is probably too short to be really useful cfw a MX helmet, but is still useful.

I really like being able to unclip the visor on the road Shoei helmet, so I can wash it at a gas stations etc, to get rid of dust & bugs mid ride  The Hornet can't do that, but then I haven't seen any adv helmet that can..

I can unclip the lining from the Hornet & completely wash that, which (given how manky I get after a good ride) has to be more pleasant than not!! :shifty:

Due to dubious connections within the industry, I have a reasonable helmet collection, including a Shoei Hornet and a Arai Tour X. Basically the Shoei edges the Arai slightly in every department except the peak - the Hornet peak is neither use nor ornament, but the pin-lock visor and venting on the Shoei is fantastic.

In respect of our nay-saying comrade, I also have a Shoei XR1000, which is a great road helmet, but not a patch on a real adventure lid when the going gets tight and sweaty...

Timg uses one of those and likes it IIRC. Yup, the SuperVisor suits me. It's not overly large, doesn't catch the wind, can ride at highway speeds with visor up with minimal effect, and with visor open an inch or so for good ventilation with no effects. I commute into the sun in the morning, and into it AGAIN at the finish of work :( Mine is fitted to a Nolan 102 flip front helmet. Might look a bit dorky but it works well IMHO.

The latest in my quest for a decent dual sport helmet...
I have tried a few of the cheaper brands, HJC and FFM, fit is OK, but there are so many sacrifices in terms of visor shape (distortion and strange reflections:blink:) and opening ability of the visor (ie it doesnt!)
So I had just about decided to bite the bullet and shell out for an Arai. I have used their Road and MX helmets for years and I always thought they fitted me better than a shoei (Arai head! - is that a condition!)
I had scanned ebay US, Oz and UK, finally found some in Japan for good money - about $600 shipped, but was still being tight and hanging on to my cash in the hope that something would happen....what?...who knows, lotto win maybe!:gob:
Then Crazy frog appears and has one in the perfect colour and size for me! Yay!:yes::niceone:
Hope it arrives on monday and I will report back on the folly of compromise and only getting what you pay for etc, etc. :bleh:
Or not, if it turns out the same as the HJC!:bye::Oops:

Happy to help Gav! At the end of the day, I loved the Arai but it was surplus to my needs as my riding has crossed over to the dirt, and with it being a good snug fit, I would get hot too quickly, time for an open helmet and goggles.
You should be happy with it, it's a great lid and serviced it's purpose well, but I couldn't justify keeping it to use 3-4 times a year when I might do a longer road ride on the EXC. The EXC is not really the machine I'd want to do long distance on anyway, I think the seat would cut me in half, but hell, the trail riding has got a whole lot more exciting.:woohoo:

I bought a Shoei Hornet coupla weeks back, had a chance to take it out now and I luv it, on Thursday night we weighed it against the Arai, Grex and various others with super digital scales, the Shoei came in 60 grams lighter than the Grex and 120 grams lighter than the Arai.

While weight is not everything it does make a difference while swinging around on your nut all day.

General opinion was that the Shoei Hornet was the better pick (pending head shape of course).

We are now looking for a small Shoei Hornet for Ellen.

Hi all, said I would post back with feedback on the Arai TourFX lid that I got from Crazy frog - Thanks!
Anyway, my quest is over! A perfect helmet for me!
Lighter than my road arai's
Peak is large enough to stop heaps of sun glare - and mud!
Excellent aerodynamics - no peak grab
Perfect vision - no distortion (even got a tinted visor as well - fantastic for that early am low sun)
Really good ventilation that turns off and on easily
Washable liner
Sooooo comfortable - I love those arai cheeks!
Seems pretty quiet - certainly no whistles. Fantastic with earplugs!
And, best of all, no skulls, flames, lightening flashes, or other power ranger stuff!

I love my arai!!!
It seems that you do get what you pay for in the end...
The search is over....and thanks to Crazy Frog pretty cheap as well, double cool!

I'm after trying on a 2100 or 2100b (or an FFM Matrix for that matter) to get sizing and check the fit. I have a Raid 2 which is a great helmet but I don't want to bang it about too much, so a $200 helmet with a peak will suit me better for ADV use, especially as my talents are limited and I am likely to fall off again.

They're available brand new on Tardme from seller eMoto for $186. This was their response to a question about visors, blanking plates and colours for the 2100b:
A: Sorry but the importer only brings in the Titanium colour or the black, there are smoke visors avail RRp $ 69.00 and as for the blanking plates they are not bringing them in at this stage, hiope this helps.

Well I'll be buggered if I can find a 2100(b) in Auckland, but judging by the fit of some other Zeus helmets I tried, they don't suit a Shoei head. So I'll be saving my pennies for a Hornet, given comments earlier in the thread about visor distortion with the FFM (which would drive me nuts).

FWIW I noticed that the FFM and the Zeus aren't SHARP rated at all... only to discover that neither is the Hornet!

I've got family in Canada I need to catch up with. Thinking about crossing Canada and coming back via the TAT. It'll take a serious amount of coinage. I'll just put this near the top of my wish list for now. The top item is currently a bit more achievable.....a home brew kit.

Kanny just got an HJC cl-xs from John at Boyds sale for $100.
Peak is adjustable.
Visor on, or mx goggles can be worn.
1600grams. (bit heavy, but for the price, good enough)
Heaps of chin clearance, and comes with spare side plates/screws.
Looks a bit like that R Jays helmet.
Boyds/John rocks.
New boots, pants, gloves, camelback, thermo chin thingy, and rain overjacket, and Helmet for $5hundy.

I can vouch fo the shoei /airoh head thing. tried both and they fit my oversized melon very well. The only other brand that seems ok is FFM. The sizez, e.g. xl vary so much between brands.
I too can vouch for the shoei/airoh head shape - I am, like yourself Woodman, a Shoei / FFM head - so (being the tight bustard that I am) went for a FFM Matrix, wore it today for the first time - A couple of things, peripheral vision seems much improved over my road helmet and air flow is much improved, all in all pleased with it and a steal for under 2 hundy! Only thing that grates is that you can only get it in black (or black/white with skulls)

The first problem you'll have is the top will dig into your shin something fierce.
The second problem is the bottom strap thing is a little short and may fall out occasionally when you undo them.

Once you've got them beaten into shape though they're great :D

A good sole on the buggers and nice to walk in too.

Snow Seal.

Warm them up, apply Snow Seal - it will make them more pliable and improve waterproofing.

I would really like to find a pair that was predominantly leather. With out all this plastic shit all over them. Stiching is a door way for water. Sure the leather boots would be nice if they had some reinforcing round the ankles.

And Oscar, most of these new boots are 60% plastic, hard for snoseal to work on that. (at least the ones I have seen)

Er - my Gaernes are Leather, with some plastic on the outside.
There is actually no way to make Boots 100% waterproof, but applying Snoseal to the stitching is a start.
My point was that using Snoseal or dubbin (on the inside in necessary) will make them pliable.

I wanted protection and comfort (sounds like a condom ad!!). Basically no boot is gonna be 100% waterproof, particularly if yer standing knee deep in a stream dragging someones stalled BMW to safety, but these ones at least stay dry in a storm.

Last posted here in the old days when it was all helmets as far as the eye could see... When I were a lad etc etc.

As for boots and waterproofing. Use MX boots. The end.
When a bike falls on your leg it hurts. 2 broken legs with 6 screws and a pin still remaining (from MX bikes) have taught me that you should always get the best protection for your lower leg.
What about water proofing? I used to use a carrier bag between sock and boot but the sweat makes it hotter and smellier than - well a hot sweaty, smelly thing! Also the bag usually splits so you have a not waterproof, hot, sweaty smelly thing!
Then I found the answer - GoreTex socks!
Problem is I cant remember where I got mine from - It was nearly 10 years ago on the other side of the world. But I'm sure that the interweb thingy will find something... Think they may have come from a hiking/outdoor shop?

Looking at the exchange it should be more like 4 hundy. I know the conversion works out to about 320 ish but rarely does it work that way in retail in NZ.

I work for an importer (not bike related) did a bit of number crunching - 480 isn't far off what the retail would be here if imported. Just working off us and eu retails, factoring in taxes and freight and the hidden costs of importing and they are pretty close.

I got one of these from the Speedshow this weekend - $499 - and have been using since in a range of (typical) Dorkland weather ie rain, wind, sun....sometimes all at the same time.

Happy with the noise level - more wind about the face but comparable to my old Shoei (Airoh was hideous for noise). Will look at getting a windjammer to reduce airflow over the winter.

The chin piece feels a bit flimsy - but I like the adaptability of using it any which way. Getting used to the visor not being able to lift as high with the peak on - but its a minor inconvenience.

I like the metallic silver!

Had a look at the HJC this weekend. Nice enough looking helmet. But I don't like the flimsyness of the front guard. And realistically I would hardly ever use any of the configurations anyway.
It would stay in one form, so there would be no point spending the dollars on it. IMO.

So I guess I will look for a reasonable sub 200 adv helmet.

I'm one that would use all the configurations but I'm buggered if I'll spend that much on a helmet.

On a camera or an iPod maybe but not a helmet.

Dunno. I've never spent more than $200 on a helmet.

My main concern would be how it handles the wind and the weight of it.

After much debate and umming and aahing, I bit the bullet and dished out some dollars for a Airoh S4. I searched around and I saw that the price was $499 here in New Zealand. I had a little search on the net and found a store that I wish I hadn't...:shit: OMFG!!
The prices are unbelievable and what is even better is the shipping prices!
So....here is the Gist!
I got the Airoh S4, same size as my other old Arai 6 year plus lid, XL, WITH a new spare visor - Dark smoke for the summer...Landed here in NZ for $325...
It is white - that colour is not available here and the shipping price was only $30 NZD with DHL. My card has been charged and it was $325 all up. :)

I got one of these this arvo, but be aware there is a serious flaw and I'll be going back to the shop tomorrow to get a replacement peak.

The peak is held on with 2 screws on each side. However there is a gap under the rear screw and when its screwed in it just cracks the peak by where the red arrow is - DUH (the cracks were already there as it was the shelf / demo helmet and someone had already screwed it in too far)

I've done a quick fix and cut some tubing to make up a big fat washer to screw down snugly on without munting the peak.

There is another less serious issue where the peak has 2 height settings. On the lower height with the visor up it touches the bottom of the peak and would quickly scratch the visor right on the eye line, with the wind making everything flex - double duh!

The good points are price, one of the best helmets I've every had with my glasses on (has cutouts in just the right places), good ventilation and extendable peak that I can put some black tape on for sun strike.

Edit: I was just weighing it and it was 1.85kg compared to my FFM M9 old lid which was 1.55kg; when I noticed that that serveral of the plastic bits are IDENTICAL to the FFM helmet, including the vent on the top, the rear vent, a plastic moulding at the rear base, strap and fittings, lining materials and removable lining clips and hooks! Got me a new rjayffm helmet!

So you've had this for a while now, what do you think of it? does it make getting the helmet on and off any different?

How much was it and where did you get it from?

I used it for my recent trip around oz (15,500 km over 4 weeks and about 600 km per day so a good amount of riding) and I'd rate it 8 out of 10:

Fit and comfort - excellent. I'm caucasian with a round head and I never had any pressure points or discomfort even with a full days riding.

Noise - its a medium noisy helmet which you'd expect with the strap location and a peak.

Peak / Sun shade - the base design with the extendable peak is excellent but the implementation is poor. The extension piece is smoked plastic so still lets the sun through. So I modded it with some black duct tape and then it was excellent. I'd be riding into the setting sun with full visibility and my buddies were really struggling with sun glare off their conventional road helmets. They also were using a lot of suntan lotion up north on their faces and I didn't need any.

Finish and build quality - very good, nothing fell off and no loose threads or anything.

Breakability - poor they've used brittle plastic in a lot of places. The peak extension and mount are made of brittle plastic and if you dropped it on the peak (or did a face plant) it would likely break. Right at the front of the visor is a nipple that clicks into a clip in the helmet body itself to keep the visor firmly closed, this (clip in helmet) broke within a week.

Design - overall very good except the screws on the side of the peak as per earlier above post.

Riding at high speed - I was pleasantly surprised, there was little wind push except if I turned my head sideways.

Side wind - poor - a strong side wind realy pushes the helmet around.

Rain - good for keeping the rain out but the droplets stay on the visor for a long time after the rain stops.

Weight - poor its one of the heaviest helmets around at 1.8 kg.

Fogging up - good - it never fogged the visor (the other guys were having fogging probs so I had something to compare)

Ventilation - OK - the vent on the top looks good but does bugger all. I forgot to close it in the rain but didn't get wet!

Cold weather - not realy sure, the coldest we travelled was only 8 degrees but that isnet realy cold enought to tell.

Camelbak room - I didn't have any problems with mine as there is plenty of room between my chin and the helmet chin (I've got a normal chin!)

I'd buy another one tomorrow as even with the faults at a quarter of the price of the more expensive helmets, who cares.

If they changed to less brittle plastic and put some spacers in the peak mount it would be the best buy on the market.

Cheers ears

Great report on the Rjays Adv helmet.
I'm looking to replace my (munted) Zeus & looking at options. It will be a good comparison, I reckon.
Ideally I would like an integrated sun visor but only version of that, that I can buy without importing, is the HJC IS-Multi. However there are very mixed reviews on that lid.

New Rjays helmet arrived just in time for weekends ride, ex Motomail via local dealer @ $269.00. This is to replace my "grazed" Zeus, bought new for $199. Both these helmets are an improvement on my first "true" Adv helmet, a Nolan Grex RD1. I hate glare, hence preference for helmets with an adjustable peak.
The reason I buy Adv helmets at the budget end of the market is simply because I gark them and as long as they meet the safety standards then I figure it's better to just replace them as required, without worries of having to discard a more expensive helmet.
The ride included norwest wind & dust, cold fog & rain, on a mix of gravel, dirt roads & seal, night & day.
Size & fit
My Zeus is a nice snug Medium. However the Rjays M was just too tight so had to get a Large. The Rjays also has a tighter (oval) base spread than the Zeus (roundish) shape.
Chin strap buckle
Zeus has easy button type release but the adjuster slips. Rjays has double D type but it's too far to the side & fiddly to get at.
Vision
The Rjays has amazing peripheral vision and can easily fit goggles - the Zeus can't.
Venting
The Rjays has the better top vent. Both have good chin bar / face vents, however the Rjays sits lower.
Visor & fogging
No distortion in either visor. The Zeus has more pronounced indents for partial opening. Rjays visor was worse for fogging, probably because it's larger & lower, so more affected by breath.
Peak
Both adjustable & good for low winter sun when adjusted down. Rjays also has benifit of a peak extender, which I found very useful. However Zeus peak is less effected by cross wind than Rjays.
Noise
Zeus helmet is much quieter of the two, possibly helped by thicker padding. The Rjays has an irritating noise from side of visor, possibly from gap for goggle strap. I will look at filling this gap.
Padding
Both have removable padding, Rjays is anti-bacterial. Zeus is thicker & warmer, Rjays thinner & cooler. Sunglasses fit better in the Dakar.
Conclusion
Both these helmets have been on the market for a couple of years now. Basically the main difference is the Zeus is a road helmet with peak added (& looks like it too), while the Rjays is an enduro helmet with a visor added (& looks better).
So far I'd say the Zeus might be the better winter Adv helmet while the Rjays would be the better summer adv lid. Time will tell.....
Pic's of the Rjay's, Zeus & Grex.

The Dakar visor didn't leak in the rain but it is noisier than the Zeus. I could reduce the noise while riding by pushing in the visor sides, just under the pivots. Hence my assumption there is some tolerence there for goggle straps.
Haven't compared them to a top end helmet, sorry.

No worries, I'm shopping down the cheap end too  If only a shop within 200km stocked any adv helmets...

I once had an old Kiwi road helmet that I improved the quietness of by about 200% with the application of a few layers of duct tape under the edges of the visor.

I've picked up the relatively new FFM matrix helmet, returned the first one as my usual XXL was a bit too big. The XL is a good, snug fit. Huge ventilation, I can't see the visor ever fogging, unless I decide to smoke while riding. Great field of view, and the visor isn't noticeable until just under 100K. I think there might be some distortion when looking through the visor, but I haven't spent enough time to be sure. Spent $200 bucks and got a tinted visor thrown in. Double D rings and I can fit goggles with the visor right up. The skull graphics are either really cool, or slighty embarrasing, but I wanted a white helmet so I'll deal with it.

Finally took the "uber-kool skull graphic" helmet out for a proper test ride, and I am absoulutey amazed at how much better the field of view is (over my last helmet, FFM Tourpro). I cannot see myself ever going back to a helmet with less peripheral vision- unless I was doing a track day and I needed a proper race style helmet. There is much more air noise, so I will definately be wearing ear plugs on the longer rides. On cold days I will also need to get some sort of lower face protec as the airflow is almost like riding with an open face helmet. Their is no distortion through the lexan sheild, and the visor does help in blocking late avo sun, but it depends on how low the sun is...of course. For the fashion concious rider the skulls could be an issue, but the vastly improved field of view, comfort, and better air flow make for a really good helmet. You could always spray paint the helmet to suit your particular age group?:lol:

Just carry some Duck Tape with you and cover the front vent when it is cold or raining dont forget the ones in the top of the helmet as well. horses for courses of course my opinion is they are very noisy and get caught in cross winds at open road speeds wouldn't wear mine again on long trips after 700kms you wish you were wearing something else.

I did notice that when I hit 100kph and over the drag from the visor became noticeable, but it would appear that I can remove the visor. Luckily the "mighty ttr" doesn't like running above 100kph for extended periods so, for the moment, I should be alright. This may all change if I trade up to a DR650 next week, I'll have to do some sort of mod on the visor then.
