Hi everyone, I'm not actually new to the forum was on here years ago looking for advice riding when visiting NZ. But long time no see. :Punk:

Anyways me and my partner have an offer of a possible move to NZ, Greymouth to be exact. We are in Newcastle in Oz at the moment and ride road bikes and want to ride off road. NZ looks like the perfect place to ride so we want to know some things first.

Registration: do bike have to be registered to be ridden off raod?
Quads: are they legal to ride on public land in NZ?
Fees: roughly what does it cost a year to run a bike? (licencing, rego, etc..)
Places: any particular place you can or can't ride, round Greymouth.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys and gals. :niceone:

In the first instance may I suggest that the most important thing you could do before moving to Greymouth is to

GROW WEBBED FEET

As to the rest of your questions I have to defer to more knowledgable persons than myself

registration; there is no rego, at all for bikes not used on public roads

quads; not legal to ride on public land, unless that public land is deemed
acceptable to ride bikes on. eg no difference in laws between 2 and 4
wheels. on that note quads should stay on dairy farms where they belong.

fees; if you're intending to compete, the majority of competition clubs in nz are goverend under mnz (motorcycling nz) a license from them will cost either $75 for a single club license or $125 for a nation wide license per year. only other costs are ride fees which vary from event to event - typically $20-30 for a club level event, and then the actual running cost of the bike- eg fuel / parts / tyres / whatever you break

places- cant help with suggestions for down south sorry!

Isle of man average annual rainfall = 863.3mm
Greymouth average annual rainfall = 2,875mm

Always good to hear of newbies coming to NZ. When might you be moving?

There's actually some quite good riding around Greymouth & nearby, there are lots of old mining & logging roads on public land that are open to vehicles. Get the South Is 4wd guidebook for some ideas.

Yeah i noticed in aussie lots of dirt bikes with regos. Ya get that here but more for people who want to ride on the sealed road and do little off road excursions. Most people in here (offroad part of Kiwibiker) trailer or van or whatever their bikes to designated ride areas or organised trail ride events (or MX, Xcountrys, enduros etc)

If you want to be able to ride your bike out of your garage and out to the bush to do some on road/off road exploring you'll find the fellas in the dual pupose section know the deal with rego. etc....

Unless your garage backs onto rideable land (which probably isn't uncommon in Greymouth)

Anyway. i'm pretty sure John Key won't let Occas in anymore... Our collective IQ is low enough as it is

Just fuckin wit ya.... come on over

Land Transport NZ (LTNZ) is the govt roading authority, they have an info page for motorcycles (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/road-user-safety/motorcyclists/) which has links to rego costs etc.

Yeah i noticed in aussie lots of dirt bikes with regos. In Aussie you need to be a licensed rider on a licensed bike to ride casually in forests. So enduro bikes are quite popular and often rego'd. Here, you don't need rego, so MX bikes are much more popular, and enduro bikes often don't have rego and/or get mx-ified (lights removed etc).

Your advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys and gals. :niceone:[/QUOTE]

Totally illegal to ride any quad in NZ in the vicinity of a two wheeler Unless of course it is to retrieve a broken down one
Best left on the farm!

You'll love NZ! Best place in the world to ride dirt bikes
The sport has now overtaken Rugby as our national pastime!
