Hi guys
I will be visiting my boyfriend in the North Island the week of the 20th - 27th December and we hope to bike around the Coramandel and camp. He has his own bike and gear but no extra helmet. I was really hoping to rent a helmet for the week to save the hassle of buying and then reselling one, but so far have had no luck finding one to rent.

Does anyone:
a) know of anywhere that rents helmets in the Auckland area or
b) have a size Small (I'm a girl with a small-ish head!) helmet lying around they would be willing to rent to me for that week? Anywhere in the Auckland area, we would of course pick it up and drop it off from you.

Any help much appreciated!!
Thanks
Lindsay :stupid:

Are you going to borrow gloves, jacket, boots, and pants as well?

You are a mug getting on the back of some hot-boys bike with no safety gear on except a helmet.

Sorry, but it doesnt work that way.

Can you read dickhead?
She never said he was hot, where did that come from? Your imagination?
Save the lectures on safety for dickheads who would vent explosive gas to the atmosphere etc.

I would think/hope that she thinks he is hot due to the fact that he is her boyfriend :p

Hi Lindsay,

Waikato Rentals here in Hamilton (sorry, not in Auckland) rent bikes and helmets. You should google them and check out their website. Not sure if they'll just rent helmets but if it's not too far out of your way you can always ask :sunny:

He could at least wait until she has a couple of posts under her belt before rolling out his trademark stupidity.

Thanks for your help guy, I didn't expect to get any replies!

DangerousBastard - I appreciate your concern for our safety, however viciously worded. There are certainly girls who will just hop on the back of a bike with any idiot who just got his licence and a fancy bike.
However, my man is an advanced driver with 10 years' experience. We are both experienced bikers and members of the Advanced Bikers (UK). We are also both emergency staff and have dealt with more than our fair share of accident victims. We certainly know enough to wear protective equipment. The issue for me is just getting the helmet.

And yes, he IS hot! :Police:

Everyone else, thanks for your suggestions (and backing me up!) :) I will check out the place in Waikato. We have friends in Ngaruawahia so Hamilton isn't too far. So far most places have refused to rent gear without a bike rental, which I can't afford right now *sob*

Keep the suggestions coming! :)

We certainly know enough to wear protective equipment. The issue for me is just getting the helmet.I wasn't showing concern for your well-being, I'm just puzzled how you already have $500 worth of safety gear, but hesitate at buying a $120 helmet? Makes no sense to me. I don't think you have full safety gear at all.

I strongly suggest you go scrape your knee on our nasty tar-sealed road and see what it feels like first, before you crank off on a holiday with a pair of jeans, a windbreaker, and a borrowed helmet.

Anyway, I'll stand up for your rights to wear whatever you choose.. so DO have a a fun holiday! The coromandel is a grrreat place to explore.

And don't call kiwis "vicious". You will find they will speak their mind in a forthright fashion, and you are not used to that then you are in their country so thats your problem. You will also discover, in the same breath the same people will drop everything and run to help you, should you have any problem whatsoever, even if that problem is all of your own making.

Thanks DangerousBastard, for proving yourself an idiot by completely contradicting everything you have just said about the kindness of Kiwis with your attitude. If you could read, you would see that I was clearly not calling Kiwis vicious. Just you.

Seeing as you have absolutely no clue about me and further, I can't see why you care seeing as you have nothing to add to my initial query, I have no intention in engaging in any further conversation with someone who so clearly has a chip on their shoulder.

I would certainly hope that should we have the misfortune of crashing, that we will not have the further misfortune of having you come to our aid as I'm guessing you're all talk. You've proved your manliness by coming into a forum with no intention of helping someone who has asked a friendly question, and picking on a 20-something year old girl. Classy mate.

Thanks everyone else for your answers. I really appreciate it, and I think have got my problem sorted. I don't intend coming back to this forum because I have a feeling the abuse will be heaped on me by this one guy spoiling it. I love your country and I'm really looking forward to my holiday there - I do really think Kiwis are the nicest people in the world. Give us a nod/wave when you pass us - I'll be the girl with no helmet, wearing a bikini on the back of the Gixxer 1000 driven by the newbie biker going 220km on the wrong side of the road - haha! lol! :Punk:
Thanks again

If you need the use of a helmet and it fits its all yours. I am kind of close to Auckland. No rental fee required.

I dont intend giving it to DB for what he has offered.

Don't mind DB - his hearts in the right place, his delivery is just lacking. KB can get a get vitriolic at times, but that's just part of it's charm. I do feel the need to pull out the "traditional" KiwiBiker battle cry though: pics or it didn't happen. :-)

I hope you have a great holiday and be safe on our roads. As a vast over-generalisation, you will find NZ drivers somewhat less "advanced" than the the equivalent in the UK.

Out of curiosity, what's you and yours' backgrounds in "emergency"?

Well I don't want to fuel this thread but... i just want to say that my first reaction while reading the first post was atonishment:who on earth would actually rent a helmet?!!!
Might be because I am french and english is not my mother tongue..
Of course I understood your concern and your problem after your other post but I just want to say I can understand what Dangerous Bastard first wrote (though a bit grumpily, is that correct in english?) cause he was wondering about safety which is right to do in a way.
Anyhow as i will come over to ride in NZ (some days sigh very soon I hope) I would buy a helmet or at least try to take it with me (mostly because I am XXS so not easy to find).
But if you do rent a helmet I would be interesting knowing where and how.

Did no-one else think that she was coming from the UK and a helmet's not an easy luggage item?

I also agree with marigami in that I would not contemplate using a hired hemet. I would feel much safer with buying a new çheaper helmet that I know is OK than using something that you have no idea how it has been looked after. And let's face it, who ever looks after a rental as if it's their own.

I bought a helmet off CNELL on trademe for my daughter. Couldn't justify spending huge amounts of dosh on an expensive helmet that she was going to grow out of. It has the required safety standards and only cost me $90. She only comes on the bike occasionally (Toy runs, ambulance runs etc) so not running at race speeds when she is with me. I would fully recommend looking at these. As a helmet to be used for a short period or the occasional use, they do the job.

Sure, and there are many reasons why she may not have a helmet, but what I don't get is who's business is it anyway.
To be sure, that's not a swipe at you, but at those questioning the OP. It was a simple bloody question and only needed a simple answer.

Hi Lindsay - sorry I haven't read the entire thread so this may be a repeat but you can buy helmets quite cheap, i.e. $100-. I would assume for safety reasons (as well as hygiene) no-one will hire helmets.

Sorry Lindsay but you're going to have to be a little more specific than that if we're going to pick you out of the Coromandel crowd. Besides, how did you & Carver meet in the first place?.

No offence but being emergency staff, in the IAM and having done your CBT and full license, it should have been drummed into you to not have any dealings with second hand helmets.

Just buy a $100 helmet. Won't have a removable lining and all the fancy features but who cares.

Let me tell you from experience, I hit as stone on the highway last weekend, destroyed my dryrider gear (pants, jacket and gloves) helmut Shoei was a mess, and the bike, well I am waiting to hear.

Please please, have good gear, you never know what is around the corner.

I was told when I was purchasing my gear I had expensive tastes, I told the salesman this morning, if it wasnt for my expensive tastes I wouldnt be here today.

I survvived the accident, let alone walk(hobble) out the hospital the next day.

I was doing about 80kmph when I impacted. Hit the cliff face, slid down the road following my bike. Yes I was very very lucky.

Cheers

Graeme
