Me and Krad and his bro will be there, was good last year. We'll be at tussock buster too. I prefer the riding at DS, more foresty stuff & the mx track in the middle of nowhere was neat, but TB is cool fun too. That 90k dam buster thing was a mish but cool to see the dam and ride along desert road!

I still need to tighten my chain, but no biggie, might do it Thursday night. I'm super excited, mind keeps wandering during the week, it's cool to have something to look forward to just after work's started!

We have added an Extreme Trail to the event. It is by far the toughest trail we have ever had at an epic events ride. It will be tough in the dry and almost impossible if wet. The trail is only 4km long and is an option off the West trail. The trail involves a river crossing, rocky hill climb, rutty downhill, another hill climb and a roots and rocks section. It is a trail for mountain goats so we think it will provide serious challenges for top riders.

^ I'll be avoiding that bit like the plague!! But looking forward to some good hillclimbs, rock garden, and the mx track in the middle of nowhere (if those are back for this year?). Also I'm going to remember to bring two pairs of socks this year since getting them wet from river crossings on Saturday means frozen soggy feet on Sunday!

well! Roadtripdiva has just left here after showing me the best 1/2 week of my life! Shes heading for Dessert Storm on her little GN250. She is the tall, tanned smiling Canadian woman who will be looking after you noobs at sign in! treat her well and let her know that you are a KBer!

Rayne has just had a crash course in dirtbike riding, motorcycle maintainance, vindaloo curry making and DIY alfesco sanitation, so she should cope well with the rigours of desert storm!
If you are lucky enought to meet her down there- take the time to say hi. If she asks to ride your fourfiddy, let her! But make sure she shows you her Bruises. On wednesday she tackled the Neavesville track and came through muddy and bruised but still smiling smiling smiling!::lol::lol:

Just finished unpacking the trailer. What a weekend. Today was the best day with a bit of everthing. Dry at the bottom and sticky at the top especiially going back over yesterdays trails that had some good ruts. The expert sections were interesting ,good to see the young guys having to think about getting over rocks and stuff. First DS for us but already planning for next year.

I'm tired. Phew. Pics to follow! Day 1 was wet wet wet. Our tent leaked on friday night and we were treated to an evening of chinese water tourture. Drip, drip, drip... Main trail was MUDDY! Some nice bits, but a lot of it big muddy ruts that just swallowed my wee bike whole, would have been a nice easy trail without the mud, that was kind of tiring in the end. There were def still some good fun parts, just a real shame about the rain/mist since you couldn't see a lot of the awesome scenery, which is a big part of doing DS. How embarrassing walking it across the river with KBers watching :bleh: I was sweet on all the other ones, honest ;) My bike is so low and sounds like death whenever it gets wet, I'm just paranoid about drowning it, it throws hissy fits even when I take it through big puddles at the sandpit.
Day 2 was mint, so flowy and fast and cool, I was loving the berms and whoops. Unfortunately I lost my kickstarter in one of the expert sections (I didn't even come off or whack anything, it just dropped off at some point?) luckily we found it, but I had to do a bit of roll starting most of the 63k trail and krad very nicely push started it a few times, which can be pretty tiring work! The mx track in the middle of nowhere was shut sadly just when we got there due to some nasty broken bones and internal bleeding and what not. Due to the kickstart issue I didn't do the rock garden or any other expert bits after that since I was trying to not stop or stall :( There's always next year! Saw quite a few chick riders out there this year which was pretty cool. The triple crown comps were pretty entertaining, and the meals were great as always. See you camp campers at tussock buster next then?

Definitely fantastic yesterday, tracks were awesome, perfect weather. Drowned the 200 on Saturday, really wasn't that cold in the river! I hate that when that happens! The calibre of rider in the competitions made them fantastic to watch! Thanks guys! Didn't see you Spiked Punch, darn! Wimped out on the camping, preferring the heated floors and clean toilets of the motor lodge in Ohakune - yeha!! Think I saw your friend Cave Weta, doing the marshalling? It was a great weekend! Was fabulous seeing you again Midget 200 - and all your friends are such awesome people too! You guys all rock!
Saturday was definately pretty sloshy but still a lot of fun and Sunday was brilliant. I loved that 65km loop, such a good mix of terrain etc, didnt so much like the bit towards the end though with all the tree roots! Bring on Tussock Buster woohoo!

Ride it till the red
18th January 2010, 09:11
Sick day today, walkings a bit painful! Had a silly little low speed crash that should never have happened whilst sitting behind a slow mate on my last loop of the day yesterday. Lets just say I'm thanking my lucky stars as if the handlebars had got me 1cm further over, kids would be out of the question! Apart from that I managed to stay pretty safe, a couple of corner slide outs with the bike still running waiting to be picked up didn't hurt, but a crushed finger between the bars and a tree in 3rd gear whilst making a tight pass wasn't so comfortable!

Apart from that it was a brilliant weekend! Clocked up 280kms over the two days, drunk a fair bit of piss and had a good little Brazier campfire on the Saturday night!
Yesterday was definately the pick of the bunch weather and trail wise, couldn't have asked for more really. I did wonder why the MX track had been shut Spiked Punch (between my 1st and second laps) imagined it would be something along those lines unfortunately! And Saturday made for a bit of a challenge sliding through the tree's in top gear hoping it would all go to plan and the ruts left by others wouldn't drag you in. The Rock Section was pretty choice, I had totally the wrong bike for it and my clutch fingers weren't happy with me by the end but hopping through it was good fun. I was amazed at the age of some of the riders in there, what looked like 12 year olds on 85's giving it their all!

See you all next year for more of the same!

sat was the best day, i had heaps of traction and with a half worn tyre didnt really have an issue at all, the most fun was weaving through all the strandard bikes at good speed at the staircase and the other muddy hills, it was deffinatly easy to attack the slush by going fast as the momentum helped when you backed of the gas,
got sick of the hero's that go screaming along the road next to the car park and the ones who scream past you covering you in great big fuck off rocks, and i wasnt going slow either, 6th gear at 1/3 throttle.
sunday was good , a few to many road sections for my liking but the expert sections were awsome, 1 in particular was very tight and tecnical.
but very flowing at a fast pace, just wish it had rained on the sunday to make it a bit harder.
but all in all a good weekend for the majority.

Completely agree, always the worst part of big rides is the guy on the trail bike with long gearing who decides that after you breeze past him through the trail sections it's a great idea to do 100kmph down the gravel roads past you making it dusty as fuck and showering you in rocks only to get in the way again as soon as it's back to anything vaguely difficult

I had a goodie and the boys had a blast. Was just taking pics and kinda failed on Sunday... got too drunk and couldn't will myself out of the cosy van on Sunday morning so didn't even manage to pick up the camera and walk the track. Got about 400 on Sat near the end of the main loop.

Highlight for me was the press pass for the endurocross. Got so close to that river jump and very wet. was all worth it for the pics though... this was my favourite

i Had a quick word to a guy who after overtaking down a gravel track just pulled infront of me and covered me in stones so when he stopped and waited for his mates to catch up i had a word with me about it and just got the reply i was expecting of fuck off. i had expected nothing less of these wankers.

but even they could not spoil what was my first DS. a big thanks to all that made it a great weekend.
The Sat was a bit of a hand full with the growing depth of mud (the "don't mind the dust" sign was a bit premtive) and at the 25km mark my misses bike decided to start playing up (shit in carb) so it made the hill climbs a bit of a challange.
Sun was a complete change to Sat and was a joy to ride but I paid the price of going to fast for my skill level and came off half way down a straight and ended up seeing a few stars (thanks to whom ever it was that stopped). then to top it all off with only about 5 ks to go I kicked out of a corner and got my foot stuck on a tree root and have torn the ligments in my knee.

i will be back next year. maybe with some knee protectors

Seemed on the Sunday there were heaps of guys racing up behind us girls, revving, we pulled over as soon as we could, they'd then pass and spray shit all over us! Then at the next clearing they'd be chatting. We'd go on and they'd do the same thing over and over! I understand they're out there having fun, but we were trying to do the right thing! Perhaps they should try motor x, or man up for the competition at the end of the day instead of roosting us! Still have to figure out why they do it!! But to those few guys who waved and thanked us, without the big roost, you rock!

I got some tasty facefulls of dirt for sure. I was trying my darndest to keep to one side to let faster people pass, not always easy in the slippery mud, so a bit rude to get showered in mud, esp when it's too rainy for goggs. Stilll, I know sometimes you can't tell you've done it. I always try and pass people slowly and then let back on the gas a bit further on. But yeah, I unknowingly roosted Krad a few times apparently... :innocent:
Also I've put pics up on FB, I can't seem to link them from there even though I made the album public so just check them out there I guess!

More than likely posers on 450MX bikes and they can't go for longer than 10mins without having a rest and the only place they can use all that power is on the gravel roads. See it all the time at most rides.

i had words with a guy after he stoped on the bottom side of a real bad rooted section leaving you no where to go but over the roots that were on a 45 degree angle down the hill towards him and on the inside of the corner, yess prob my fault for not being able to stop in time as i was going pretty fast and attacking the section as i had no where to go but still wasnt a good place to stop for a drink,

There seemed to be a heap of newbies that lacked trail sense. Everyone has to start somewhere but is the DS a good place to learn. Getting past some of them got a bit tedious as taking the expert sections meant you found yourself stuck behind the same unpredictable track weaving mobile hazzards.

i understand where you are coming from but there was the same "unpredictable track weaving mobile hazzards" with the more adavanced riders aswell. it just comes down to manners, some people have them and some don't, and with the wet track on Sat fitness played a big part.
I am not an advanced rider so i needed to pick where and when i overtook and there were times, with very novice riders in front, when riders came flying up the middle scaring the crap out of eveyone.

i think some riders were out on a mission and some were just on a relaxed ride. we all had to learn at sometime if that was at 5 or 50 and i think some people have forgotten (or don't care) what that was like.

spikedpunch: i think me and nick(EXCdirt) passed you on one of the muddy uphills bound to have been plenty if roost there lol, all i could see was lots of blue smoke and that distinctive looking bike.

getting roosted and trying to pass the slower riders is all just part of the fun in my book, if someone want to zoom past and spray me on the gravel roads thats fine, i know im guilty of doing it sometimes.

i dont think it was me, could have been, i forgot to write the numbers down that were posted on here sorry guys, i would have roosted many many many people who were stuck on up hill sections, just so i could keep going, i got sick of helping people up the hills and helping clearing the back log, you help a guy out and dont get anything that sounds like a thanks, like the dude whos clutch ran away on the stair case, i re-adjusted it and said try that, next thing he's off and covered me in shit, what a fk wit..... some said thanks tho and thats all it takes.

yeah one of the kickers claimed a mate too, he ended up attempting a fwd flip which failed bad with the bike bouncing up side down on top of him, got badly winded and bit his tounge. got a ride out too.

Hmm I wonder if that was the hill where a quad rolled into me? It was annoying, there were four of them all stopped halfway up with a good couple feet of clean line to the left, I decided to take it and mr.quaddie at the top turned round, saw me sneaking up the side and decided he wanted to go then as well...And went into the side of the bank and then rolled backwards/sideways into me. So I got stuck on a hill with a flooded bike while he tootled off with the hero parade. At another point a quad rolled over my foot, although I didn't even notice, meatbomb told me about it later haha.
I do wonder about the distinctive bike, if I do something to annoy someone it's easy to know who did it...:shifty:

Spikedpunch, I Think that was the hill. The quads were further up the hill. Flyingcr250 and me went past near the bottom and probably made a bit of noise and smoke when we went past..... Sorry for that.
Was 2 x ktm 300s.... noise.... smoke... usual stuff really.

That was an awesome event for me. Riding with Flyingcr250, Xen and jt + others was awesome! Good guys and good riders. Did around 120+kms each day so well tired after that. Some very different and varied riding conditions and terrain.

Had a huge urge to just go off into the distance towards the mountain or desert road. Exploring or expedition style riding maybe?

Keen for that tussock buster that sounds just as good. Camping and dirtbikes is a good combo!

Yeah that was a real sweet weekend. Was cool that it rained and made the first day more interesting, altho not wearing googles is dodge. Pretty challanging to keep it straight on those long dirt roads. Haha damn quads helped a couple on the 'hard' hill that got diverted, they were holding up a lot of riders. Had fun blasting along the gavel roads don't usually get to hit 5th and actually didn't seem to be that many riders on the trails I guess cause they were big loops. Mean as riding with the crew trying to keep up especially when fading early into the 2nd laps lol, that was the fastest riding i've done. Gotta hand it to jt's heap of honda even if it did blow the clutch he was pulling away from me pretty convincingly in a drag from 3rd-5th. High jump and the creek jump were primo. Yea doing some freeriding would've been mint Nick but I was too tired by that stage and could only follow the trail home haha. Keen as for tussock buster

For the guy complaining about slow riders dont hesitate to pass make sure ur arm is lower then theres that way if you come togeather your arm will lift his and make them vear of track. Works every time and its there own fault if they cant hear my bike coming they are deff. Maybe a bit mean but when helmets go on there is no friends :bash:

I don't know you or how you ride but these comments make me think you are a pure idiot with no repect for others while out riding.
Always give slower riders the right of way and be careful as they may be concentrating so hard that they can't hear you coming, have you forgotten what it was like to be learning something?

Sounds like race tactics not trailride tactics.
With the sheer numbers at DS, perhaps telling the new riders to do a novice loop first to give the faster riders a chance to go first before heading out on the big loops. I'm all for patience when passing, especially kids who are obviously out for the first ride on the "big " track. The ones I have an issue with go like this....Hear you, look back, roost you to speed up. If you catch them up you are obviously going faster so why make it harder to get past as it may end in tears.

Probably not the best advice...as that could be someones wife ,girlfriend, or child, you just made.. crash...so you could expect more injuries in the pits than out riding..whats wrong with a bit of patience I still remember my sons first berm buster..he was a novice and some prick pushed him down a bank ..it shattered his confidence..Now im a slow rider im also 6' and 120 kg so try and push me off .. and after ive tracked you down we will see how good that advice is

Thanks for making me aware of your 'tactics' in passing women! What a hero! We waited for the 'fast' guys to go before we took off as we do 'care' about other riders and don't want to annoy anyone! Were you showing your talents at the high jump or the enduro??? It was a trail ride and I paid my money just like you! What I don't understand is that if you're so good how come you have to pass us 2 or 3 times, oh yeah first making sure your arm is lower than mine, that way if you come together your arm will lift mine and make me via off track. Dickhead! Come out to Woodhill for a blast with us, would love to meet you in person!!!!

My first Desert Storm - absolutely loved it - can't wait until next year. Found Saturday a little challenging in places but great fun, especially the second hill after the staircase. Learnt my lesson this time that spending an hour trying to help other riders up hills is exhausting - and means I'm shattered for the rest of the ride. Also a bit perplexed by the very young riders out in their own - spent some time helping one up the staircase and wondered where the parents were? But found chivalry is alive and kicking on the DS - I was dithering around trying to pick my bike up, when a passing rider practically threw his bike down to come and help me pick mine up! What a legend! Wearing pink trousers definitely has its advantages. Sunday was fantastic, only wish I hadn't been so tired from the day before. And I'm sorry to say that I now really hate quads - why do people ride them? Hard to pass and then go and get stuck everywhere in everyones way!

Tussuck is the bomb! It's got so many tracks that you can be the only ones out there for ages without anyone coming past. There are huge open parts for people to pass. You don't want to miss it! It's organised brilliantly, really social! Lots and lots of river crossings. I'd put on a few pictures from last year for you but can't see with the new format how to do it! There's no little icon there!

They're opening on Friday at 1.00 pm to 4, from memory! It's so much fun!!!

i think i may have helped you at one stage, i stoped and helped people that were in a dangerous place's on down hills and blind corners.
yess some of us faster guys do pass the slower people alot of times and belive me its not by choice, as like many we have mates that are slow too so we have to wait for them, but riding at thier pace is a real pain in the arse specially when you get back to the pits and you havent even broken a sweat and its easier to let them ride at thier own pace and not push hard and crash.

How do you know this so call dork on a 450 is not just a learner, he/she might have just crashed, have some thing wrong with the bike.
some people have not had the chance to learn as a kid so get over yourself and stop being the fuckwit you seem to be showing us.

Sounds like race tactics not trailride tactics.Nope, it's moron tactics. When racing there is this concept called sportsmanship; it's a myth that racing is 'no holds barred'.

One of the big differences between the fast guys and the _really_ fast guys is how they pass. The wannabe's think argy-bargy is fine; the really fast guys always pass with plenty of room and usually say or signal their thanks. And the really fast guys don't run stupid-loud pipes, either.

Yes and no. You can pick a clean line, initiate the pass and then the slower rider decides to take a mental line and get in your way, your already 10kph all up on him so it gets argy-bargy. Riding is dangerous, sometimes people get taken out.

But there's a big difference between someone swerving at the last minute resulting in an accidental coming together, versus deliberately taking someone out because you are impatient & unskilled. I would think both parties involved would appreciate which situation is which.
