Sure this was raw deal that the man got from ACC. You'll get this sort of thing happening all the time if you go to a private insurance scheme - 'Sorry, you're not covered for this, that and everything else'
If its private, then you'll be fighting forever and a day! I had medical insurance in another country. It was around $2400/y for a hosital plan only ie only covering ambulances, ICU etc until discharged. No rehab or physio. Income protection insurance was seperate...
(hope the linky works)

I haven't added it up, but I suspect I'm already paying more than $2400/year in ACC (figuring out how may ACC on pay on my petrol is a bit trickier).
If the bike levy increases go ahead, I will definately be paying more than that.

Actually I have found the exact opposite.
Just last week a colleague finally received a much-needed knee operation. ACC were not accepting it was the result of an accident. Private insurer evaluated the problem, booked surgery within days and said they would follow up their findings with ACC. Turned out initial surgeon had missed the problem and damage was indeed from accident several years ago...
Have heard many stories recently along same lines, ACC so 'broke' they have really tightened up on injury classification, yet still seem to live their culture of corporate excess...

Like all "welfare state" systems they only last so long before they are choked with debt and system abuse!
This is the Libertarianz party leaders press release on the ACC hikes for bikers! http://www.libertarianz.org.nz/?libzpr=615
Read their accounts of why ACC should be replaced and privatised but done properly not just trying to have a bob each way like our socialist pretenders!
You wont read this stuff in the normal biased media so I am posting it here! (just for your information)
I do not belong to the Libertarianz party, I just like to know what's on offer out there! (instead of being brainwashed!)
