View Full Version : What's a 96 RS250 worth?

Hey guys, considering buying a RS250 and selling on my KRR (which is hopefully still worth a little given how few there seem to be around).
I love my little KRR, and it's been awesome for commuting in Auckland, but I am back to feeling it's a little too slow for me these days, and want to get something bigger. Since I've been slack with getting my full a RS is ideal since I'll still be legal.
Looking at a 1996 RS250, with under 10000kms on the clock, and a (recentish) top end rebuild. Haven't been able to check it out in person, but it seems to be in pretty good, if not very good condition. I'll have someone check it out for me if it sounds like a good deal, but I'm wondering if they're asking too much...
No 96s advertised atm, so nothing to compare it too, but it does seem that RSs are a bit over priced in general. Am I being cheeky in hoping to pick this one up for closer to $3800 than $5000? (since newer ones are going around 6-6500)
Thanks guya.

You'd be looking at the mid 4000s.
$3800 would be taking the piss a bit.

Don't waste your money on a ridiculously priced two stroke hand grenade. Keep saving and buy a good 600 / 1000.

Yeah I did figure that, however I know they also need the money soonish, and haven't found a buyer yet with a mid/upper 4000 price tag.

Agree with the above comments,I too was looking at getting one of these, but was put off with the possible high maintenance costs, engine problems etc...So i settled for a nice bandit..:)

Maybe offer 4k and bargain?
I don't think they'd take you seriously if you offered 3.8, but you never know your luck.
I also think that you shouldn't be bothering with it at all, unless you intend to keep it even after you have your full. If you just want it as an intermediary between now and the time you get a full licence it will almost certainly be more trouble than it's worth.
Be in it to win it or not at all, really.

Fuck em all !
If you want the 2 stroke, get the 2 stroke.
You will have to look after it, yes just like a hot missus. Spending money on it BEFORE it goes bang will net you plenty of good times.

If he comes to grips with it then it would smoke your whale on anything but the straightest roads
Fuckem, buy the two stroke, but do your research first on what you're up for, maintenance normally isn't as bad as most people make out so long as you use a good quality oil

For those who didn't notice, I already have a 2-stroke, just a slightly cheaper to maintain/run one. Can do any work myself no problem, plus my uncle's a rotax mech if I do encounter any issues.
Don't really want a small 4, as I've already had a inline 250 (zxr), and think if I go for a 4-stroke I'd want to go to at least a 600 (where licencing issues come into play).
I might try to get someone to look today anyway, and see if it's in as good condition as it appears.

fuck yeh, two strokes are epic fun, rode a mates RS250, gotta watch out for those powerband wheelstands in first and second!
And if you keep it in good nick I dont think itll devalue much, less than a 4t anyway.

Standard rebuild is at about 16 or 18 thousand clicks... why did it need a top end before 10 thousand kms? Raced? Raped? Ran out of oil? Neglected?

^^ Yeah that is a concern, I'm assuming it was probably ran out of oil, since that'd screw the top end and leave the bottom ok. Hopefully someone went and looked today (I'll call them later and find out), so guess I'll see if it's still worth it soon.
While we're on the subject, what do you think I should be looking at for my bike? Last one I saw sold was a dereg'd stock racer that went for about $3000...

^^Checked that out, a crank rebuild too apparently.
Still, receipts or it didn't happen right?

Still, receipts or it didn't happen right?Damn right, parts and labour.
In the end you pay your money and takes your chances... there are no unobtainable bits in that motor.

Mind you nothing is really 100% concrete. Receipts can be faked - Easily.

^^ Not really, it's not hard to spot a fake in most cases, and easy to check out at the shop anyway.
As it happens I couldn't get the price to what I wanted. Close, but in the end I have a max in mind that I'll pay sight unseen. I might give it a few days and offer the max again. I've been looking at a few on the market at similar prices that haven't moved in over a month, plus the fact there are at least 5 on Trademe atm, compared to the 1-2 a month there use to be. Some are slightly more, but either much newer, or same age and with full history. I've only just discovered that the 96s have a standard cable odo (98s on have a hard to tamper with digital one), so the Ks are somewhat suspect, being a this year import that has no overseas documentation.
