View Full Version : Under 250cc group ride - anyone keen?

Addict
5th December 2009, 23:40
I went on my first group ride last thursday on my cbr 250, felt like a bit of a knob around all thest frigin fast bikes so thought i might put this out there.

I am keen on a easy cruise with other bikes of similar power, thinking something like a 1 to 2 hour jaunt through the country around some nice corners.

Possibly the coast road to miranda or papakura-clevedon-maraetai-botany finish up at cock and bull or something?

Suggestions?

Mike

Final route:

Depart 10:30
Stop clevedon & Kaiawa & finally Cock & Bull.

(AARRGGHH, fuck it I am having insane difficulty tryiny to stick in a google map!!! so fuck it!)

Chapel rd -whitford - maraetai - clevedon - kaiawa - miranda - maramarua - hunua - clevedon - wellsford - botany.

Hope to see you all there and safe riding.

Yes, would like a cruise at a 250cc speed.

But don't give up on the Thursday night rides, I'll be back with the south auckland lot in a couple of weeks, I ride a bit like the nana I am and it would be great to have some company at the back.
Don't worry about keeping up with the big sports bikes thats not what the group rides are about ;)

The Everlasting

Probably no good for me next sunday, but I reckon we should have plenty more learner rides, cos you can't compare a piddly 45hp against all those 180hp+ Sports bikes that most of the experienced riders have.

I think Meet at botany in front of robert harris, about 10:30?, head off when all there, to clevedon via maraetai stop for break and re-group. then head off to miranda/Kaiaua or somthing near with food/coffee - suggestions?
Then if still keen for twisties then turn around and go back or cruise back via maramarua meet & finish up at pub in drury?

Dean - north shore is a long way for me how about everyone else? I will go with majority.

ReigN - is 10:30 to early for you?

Mully - I bit of experience could be helpfull, I guess the road belongs to everyone so if you wanna come along sure, but don't expect me to try to keep up with you if you get sick of the pace.

I did this route last weekend, but from clevedon went out to kawakawa bay and then round the coast to miranda before heading back along state highway 2 (maramarua) back to botney, i think the round trip was close to 170K with some nice scenery on the way :scooter:

Usually the learner friendly rides used to start from BP Botany (being a servo and all) since it was easy to get to and then straight into Whitford for some nice rides out!

Good to see some people taking the initiative and sorting out something! If'n I'm free, would be glad to tag along and help (showing the route or being TEC ...)

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=107628Yeah I had decided not to say anything here, but you learner and restricted doods should adhere to this document religiously until you have enough experience to make up your own mind in the 1/4 second that you will have. I have heard of these sort of rides come back with literally half the bikes on a trailer, so don't let your guard down. And have fun, kthx.

I have enough trouble trusting the forcast for tomorrow let alone 5 days out :bash:. But if its right it does say clearing in the middle of the day

Depending on how it turns out I was thinking we could turn this into a regular thing, maybe every 2nd weekend with the ride days alternating between saturday and sunday for anyone that always has to work a particular day.
Thoughts or suggestions?

Bit of friendly advice from another 2fiddy rider: stick to the backroads as much as possible. The number of :Police: patrolling is inversely proportional to the State Highway's number — i.e. S.H.1 = lots, S.H.25 = not quite as many. Don't ask me how I discovered this.

You may want to alter your route somewhat and take the Hunuas back from Mangatawhiri to Drury. The roads are more interesting than the motorway anyway. Something like this (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=miranda+hot+springs&daddr=Gelling+Rd+to:Ararimu+Rd+to:-37.143624,174.969463+to:Waihoehoe+Rd&geocode=Ff1JyP0dNkhzCikPmeic2GFtbTGRSQg6kebd3Q%3BF Re7yf0dT4FvCg%3BFXhByf0dOvNtCg%3B%3BFWrYyf0dNo5tCg&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=3&sz=14&via=1,2,3&sll=-37.126723,174.974184&sspn=0.050572,0.111494&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.056273,175.035553&spn=0.404953,0.891953&z=11)...

Also, for those who haven't done Kawakawa Bay to Kaiaua before, there are some gnarly corners in there that aren't sign posted, so take your time.

Mike - good and sensible sounds good to me, i dont have money to be throwing away on speeding fines (or unnessecary bike repairs.)

Didjit - You definitly have a point there mate, did it for the first time 2 weekends ago and some of those corners seem to turn back on themselves, but its still a great road to just putt along on and enjoy the scenery. :scooter:

Trust me, even when you do get wet weather gear you'll still get soaking wet!

If you learn to 'ride to the conditions' ANY conditions on any road then you'll be sweet as in the rain. Better to learn how to ride well in the shit weather when your still a noob on a smaller bike. You can never have too much experience when riding a motorbike, trust me!!

I did ride the route today however, theres a couple of places they have just laid some new seal and haven't swept all the stones off (just before Kiaua? Sp) and they were doing some resealing just before the 2nd passing lane between whitford and beachlands. Other than that just watch some of those corners just out of kawakawa bay as they really are 30kph corners.

Have fun guys, i'll be up for a ride next weekend if anyones keen

Yep just a warning that out Miranda/Coromandel way there are a few unsigned areas of light gravel on the road surface, fine for those with 4 wheels but keep your eyes peeled if you're on 2, try to slow and straighten up before you come across any gravel that appears.

Great ride and good company AND I even took the Hunua's in 3rd gear (mostly) wahoo!

Some good learning twisties and a bit of a blat (thats 115 for me and 150 for hubby). Perfect weather.

Well done everyone for a safe and enjoyable ride out to the wop wops and some parts of the back and beyond

Was good to hear some good learning and reflecting on experiences occurred and getting to know the way your bike behaves.

I was pretty well chuffed when everyone was pretty keen to keep on following me! But, thats the way to do it, ride often as you can and learn more about the this tricky motorcycling thing we do! :first:

Dunno about the rest of you, but I was picking a lot of bugs off my visor today! :pinch:

From what I was able to see, some awesome and sensible riding happening - good stuff!

Yo, I'm glad I met up with all you guys at around 1:30pm. Had a blast heading back to Clevedon, got home and found I had some pretty serious fork problems. Looks like I need some new seals eh? Boots and fairings were covered in oil when I got home.

Probably lucky I didn't cark it.

That black rubber ring is supposed to be inset into the fork, OMFG it's not :(

Gonna go see Mike Old at Drury Perforance Centre, he's my hero.

Hi I have just latched onto this thread. I'm looking at going for a run this Tuesday or Wednesday. either afternoon or evening. I'm based in Te Awamutu and ride a 250 single. Had thought of either out to Kawhia or up to Te Akau via the raglan rd , returning thru the Waingaro rd. About 1-2hrs

If any body is interested, let me know and I'ill go when ever it suits the majority. Had thought we could meet up at Ohaupo and follow the side roads .

There are plenty of roads between Ham/ Camb/ Te A. that suit an easy run at 80-100 ks. with lots of cornering fun without breaking the sound barrier. Anyone who's keen takes responsibility for themselves.

gigjoe, your riding uniform is so distinctive that it can very easily be recognized which is real handy if you're known to be on a ride that's worth joining.

Sunday 20th to Big Bay, who's keen?

Actually, its thanks to you guys for making it happen - I was chatting about the dearth of chewfiddy rides lately and was going to start them up myself. It was great to see you all taking the lead on this!

Riding in a group has its pitfalls, but the positives to be gained when everyone keeps it rubber side down is a massive bonus in terms of making friends, learning new things and above all, riding!

Plenty of roads to explore!

So to those riding tomorrow, take care, and ride safely.

Will try to get along on a few rides with you newer folk this year, the 250 rides I used to go on definitely made me a better rider, especially the mentoring I got from some KB folk who took the time to show me better ways of doing things on the road. (And still do!)

Well, went on an awesome solo group ride this morning. Addict did turn up but on his Volvo quad and therefore disqualified himself.

From Papakura to Wattle Bay was 74Km and took just under an hour. It's a fast run for the first 60Km and then gets twistier and gravelier but still fun.

Wattle Bay is real nice, would be keen to take a ride out there again some day.

Anyway, when I got to the beach there were like 30 sexy, naked, horny cheerleaders who all wanted a good hard ride on my bike. I obliged them till I ran out of salt. YOU ALL MISSED OUT!
