MotoFXR final round

A bright and sunny day for the final round and I was still hoping for a top three finish

I’d got some more jets during the week as we’d been going up and up in the jetting with the 33mm pumper so I tossed in the 152.5 to give it a run in practice, Bren dropped off some shocks to me and I changed to a stiffer rear spring and wound up the preload about ½ way

Practice and it’s feeling good, I’m not a real big fan on Ruapuna full track for small capacity racing but you have the race the track you’re on, so I thinking the preload needs winding up a bit more, it’s still got a bit of a hiccup in the carburetion but overall it’s feeling good

Grid positions up and either I wasn’t going as good as I thought or everyone has got a bit faster as I’m on grid 6 with AdamB who’s closing up on points a full 2 sec faster, I crank a bit more preload in while we’re waiting for the call

The lovely Jo turns up before race with lunch and water and bucket loads of support

Race1

Bit of brain fade as we grid up and I go to the wrong side of the track, I look across and see Buddha on the other side and by the time I move to where I should be TonyB the filthy grid position stealer has claimed my spot and I end up pushed back to row 4 ½ :angry2:

I do get a good start for a change and pretty much pass the two rows in front of me before T1 though

A lap later I’m trying an outside pass on Lil’M at the sweeper and just about getting pushed into the road cones for my effort, straight-line speed she’s fairly quick but weighing about 30kg less than I do you’d expect that but I get her under brakes, phoenixgtr is another who’s also getting harder to pass

A couple of laps in and I’ve picked off everyone I can and Buddha#81 is next in line, I’ve still got a bit of understeer which is slowing me down in a couple of corners as I run wide but it looks like I’m slowly closing him down, although I see him checking the gap occasionally and I know I will run out of laps before the flag

Bren is picking up a new loaner bike after breaking Joe (fuck he’s hard on gear)

Race 2

With AdamB getting a few bikes between us I know he’s closed up the points gap and I’ll have to try a bit harder in the next one, I crank the preload to maximum (it’s the only adjustment I got) and when we roll out onto the track I make sure I get past TonyB the filthy grid position stealer;) on the warmup lap and get my rightful spot

As we grid up I notice AdamB lines up on Tuonos bike instead of his own, which I know is a stocker so I’m hoping to get a few points back and keep my lead over him

My start isn’t as good as the first one but It’s ok, into T1 and fuck me there’s a bike up the inside in a gap I thought I had covered and it’s Bren on his borrowed bike, we’re three wide, my foot slips off the inside peg and for a minute I’m thinking I’m about to cause the biggest crash in MotoFXR history but I get it under control and set off after those in front, I’m hanging in with the front bunch and trying an outside pass on DC around the infield sweeper but with a choice of backing out or ending up on the grass as I’m not quite far enough alongside for him to see me so I roll off, I chase them for the next few laps but slowly get dropped off, I check behind and have a reasonable lead over Buddha#81 and hold that to the line ;):woohoo:

Race 3 (3laps)

Buddha leads me into T1 and we make our way through a bit of traffic, he’s slowly pulling away and I can’t work out why, I check behind and TonyB the filthy grid position stealer is catching up and passes me down the straight into the kink, the bikes feeling flat and there’s another group catching up, AdamB blows past into the right hander after the hairpin, I’m thinking I’ll nurse it to the line to pick up what points I can, with a group of bikes behind me I tip into the lefthander in the middle of the s bends and it locks up solid, I know it’s seized as soon as it starts to slide and then I’m on the deck and tumbling and hoping no bastards going to run me over

I end up on the grass at the edge of the track with the bike lying in the middle, and slowly get my feet, I watch a few other bikes go past then limp out, pick it up and push it off the track

I’m pushing it back when Buddha turns up to give me a tow and another rider (Harvd?) rocks up to ask me if he’d run me over, dunno I say, well I ran something over he replies, although maybe that’s the sore ankle I got

After not racing Bikes much in the last 2 years I was stoked with the results I got, thinking I’m be a lot slower than I was, Bren gave me a pretty good bike which helped but I think the series was about 1 race to long for it

All over red rover and what fantastic series and a credit to the organisers Bren and Mike, great racing, good entry numbers and better prizes than even the National events:Punk:

great report.

This round was fully covered by 4 cameras from CTV and they did a great job. I'm looking forward to watching the days racing but in particular your bin. ;) lol

yep i sure ran something over. Something hit me in the finger and bent the last 50mm of my clutch lever back and i managed to hit most of your bike with my leg (protecting my bike?). Stayed up and had a bit of fun trying to slow down on the grass on slicks.

Overall a pretty fun experience... At your expense...

Oh yeah my chain came off too???

2009 MotoFXR Results

Overall winner:
James Hoogie

Standard Class:
1st Place: James Hoogie
2nd Place Tony Blanchet
3rd Place: Harvey Brouard

Modified Class:
1st Place: Andy Mac
2nd Place: Darryl Cotton
3rd Place: Kickaha

Special prize for most improved rider Adam Brown. For this catergory the prize is 3 x 20 minute coaching sessions with James Smith , James is finsihed 2nd in 600cc national class 2008, so a pretty awesome prize.

Modified class was hard fought over with Darryl Cotton leading Andy Mc into the last race with a 2 point lead, the race was a real spectacle, almost went to a photo finish both riders riding out of their skins. Well done Andy fantastic effort !!

The overall winnner James Hoogenbozem wiped the plate clean, from the very first race he lead the competition , I think he pulled the whole field up a notch or two with most riders posting personal best times during the competion

Thank also to our sponsors: motorbikeparts.co.nz, RRR racing, LabelX, James Smith Racing, Pit Lane Motorcycles, Sportzone Suzuki, Duanes Bikes & Skis and Street and Sport Motorcycles.

Look forward to doing it all over next year

Aww i got a placing! Wish i could have made the prize giving... :crybaby: Mate if I hadn't got my act together and started beating you again, you would've got second. You pushed me bloody hard and I had to bring my riding level up several notches to keep ahead of you in the points. Having said that, we had no hope of getting first- James was in a class of his own, bloody impressive....especially since the only modification to that bike apears to be removal of the indicators....

We didn't get a chance to say it last night at prize giving, but Bren and Yow Ling did an awesome job coming up with this series, and then getting real backing from sponsors etc. I am most impressed with the goody bag of prizes I got.....if you win F1 KOL, you get a little plastic trophy, if you come second in the Standard FXR cup you get;

- a custom made FXR Cup silver medal
- a Daytona 1/4 turn throttle assemlby and new handgrips
- a new kill switch to go with the throttle
- a can of Elf Chain lube
- an Ezy towel
- various Michellin promotional bits
- $35 cash

No wonder Hank Randal is joining the premier class ;)

Bren has twisted my arm and forced me to post pics of my medal. I'm actually pretty chuffed with it, Bren and Yow did a nice job with these.

I hope to do a small writeup and defend myself against the filthy grid position stealer allegations tomorrow;)

What an awesome series that was! Before I do my write-up, I thought a bit of back ground might be in order.

When I heard about this series, I thought it was a brilliant idea and wanted to support it. Ultimately, supporting it came at the cost of doing the BEARS winter series- couldn’t afford to do both. I don’t regret it too much. When the idea of a Standard cup was put forward, I thought I might be in with a chance of a top three with most of the quick riders having modified their engines in some way. This made the series even more appealing.

Round one went pretty well- there were a few young guys there who were going all right, but I could beat them. But by round two Harvey appeared and was able to catch and pass me…oh no! By round 3 I was having to pick up my game heaps, but I could just tag onto the back of him. Round 4 and I still had more work to do because Harvey beat me in all three races! Round 5 and I improved some more, had some epic battles with Harvey, Agent75 and TonyMac, who’s bike was a bit sick. Finally I started to get my act together, and managed to beat Harvey in all 3 races, but bloody Agent75 managed to beat me in 2 of them on his bog standard FXR- he’s not in the points, but it’s the principle that’s at stake here! I’m not sure if Harvey was at round one…. Just as well for me that he didn’t show up if he wasn’t….the 2nd spot would have been his.

So we come to the final round at last. The sun was shining and a breeze kept the temperatures manageable. I didn’t know the points situation, but figured that if I wanted to feel like I deserved second place, I needed to beat Harvey and Agent75 consistently. I had changed the main jet to a 130 from a 132, and gone up a tooth on the front sprocket. Then Buddha told me his bike had been too lean with a 130, and he’d gone up heaps. Most people questioned my sanity with the 1 tooth bigger decision. Oh well.

Practice.
Went pretty well. Qualified 8th overall with a 2:09.123 (3rd from the INSIDE on the second row), so I was happy with that, and decided to leave the bike as is.

Race 1.
Got to the grid, and saw my position well and truly stolen. I had to nick the inside spot, as I was buggered if I was going back a row. It turns out the Kickaha suffers from dyslexia, and had gone to the wrong side of the track (its KO mate, we know you’re special), and a couple of other knobs hadn’t paid any attention to the qualifying grid.
Got an appalling start and completely lost my nerve into turn one. Got mixed up with slower riders, some random stuff happened at pothole, and I unconsciously swerved to the right just before tipping in. I connected my shoulder quite solidly with another rider (sorry- I’m not good at names) and nearly knocked her off the track. Continued on behind 66, 7, and my nemesis Harvey. Got past them after being a bit tentative for a start. Agent 75 was ahead of me, and I was pleasantly surprised when I got past him quite easily- “either I must be improving, or he’s got problems”, I thought. Then had a very large gap ahead to Lil’M. Was catching her rapidly through Pothole and the infield up till the dipper and sweeper, where she held steady or maybe made up some ground. On the last lap I made up heaps of ground, but it wasn’t quite enough. 3rd MotoFXR standard bike home. Went to apologies to my turn two ‘berm’ at the end of the race….

Race 2
Got an appalling start and completely lost my nerve into turn one….again. It wasn’t so bad this time, and I cleared Harvey and Agent 75 and set off after Lil’M. The race was shorter this time, so I didn’t have long to make up ground. I was slip streaming her for the pass on the last lap when her bike died and I shot past, narrowly avoiding a collision. 2nd MotoFXR standard bike home. Lil’M….bikes need FUEL to be able to race…

Race 3
Real short race. Got a better start and beat Lil’M etc into turn 1. Buddha and Kickaha were a bit up the track, so I set about trying to match their pace or close the gap. I didn’t feel like I was going much better than usual, but I was reeling them in on the second to last lap. Buddha kept looking back at Kickaha, so I thought something must be up. I caught and passed kick on the straight, which was highly unusual. I took off after Buddha, but never quite got there- he was having problems with his tyre, so was doing just enough to stay ahead. The cool down lap saw Kickaha having a wee break on the infield, with a couple of guys helping. 2nd standard MotoFXR home.

My riding has improved heaps over the series- I think I’m about 6 or 7 seconds a lap faster around Ruapuna on the FXR now. Only a second or 2 slower than Buddha now, so hopefully I’ll be able to dice with him soon. All in all, a great series. Thanks again to Bren and Yow Ling and all the sponsors!

Well I had an awesome day of racing on Saturday. I bought some handlebars off Brendan earlier in the week because I haven't been happy with the standard FXR bars either way up. These new bars are adjustable in every which way and they were fantastic. Much more comfotable when corner and I felt like I had more control. Practice was all good. I qualified eleventh with a lap time of 2:12.360, which put me on the second row of the grid. Pretty happy with that.

Race 1: I got a pretty average start and went into the first corner in about 9th. A few of the quicker guys passed me over the course of the first lap. Caron passed me in the second lap, but I got her back a couple of corners later and never saw from her again. Lap time almost identical to my qualifying time at 2:12.323 (my PB). Finished in 11th(MotoFXR), 13th out of everyone.

Race 2: I like starting from the second row. I got a better start for this one and was in fifth position momentarily!! Scared myself a little bit and lost several places over the course of the first few corners. Usual story after that. I settled into a rythym and once again had a lap time almost identical to my qualifying time. Finished in 11th(MotoFXR) 14 out of everyone.

Race 3: Start was almost identical to race 2, excepth this time I just went for it and clung onto the lead group for much longer. I was still behind Buddha going into Nanas on the first lap. Then Harvey got past and Miriam got through going into the dipper (still haven't got that quite right) and that was about all the excitement for the rest of the race. Came off after that one absolutely grinning. Finished in 9th(MotoFXR), 11th out of everyone.

I know I'm improving and the biggest thing I notice is how consistent my lap times are becoming. I also know where I'm going wrong. Dissappointed that the season's pretty much over. I'm at a point where I could really start pushing myself.

I had a fantastic time racing this year and can't wait til next year.

Some people are a bit slower than others to get back up to speed after crashing
the more you're back on track the easier it will get, it might even be worth doing a Tuesday or Friday or two for a play so there is no "Race day pressure"
