So I've been looking for a project for a while to keep me entertained and learn a bit more about bike mechanics. This is my first attempt at anything like this so I'm pretty excited.
So last week this bike came up and I picked it up for $100.
It's a 1986 Honda CBX250RS and it hasn't been running for 10 years. It's pretty messy, but in pretty good condition overall and all the parts are there.
So the plan is: strip her down, get her running, clean her up and reassemble.
Here's some pics:

nice, good score.
good for the ton too :)
spoked tubeless rims, thats flash
those motors have two oil filters from memory, I think one is a screen under the engine case, maybe clutch side. make sure you get em both, catostopic engine failure could result. (trust me I know)

Excellent project.
Just quietly I would have got it running first to establish that it was worth stripping down .......
Also throw away the tyres when it gets to a riding stage - after sitting for 10 years they are stuffed.

Pity it wasn't a slightly earlier model, you could have had a pre82 bike to go with the Bucket:whistle:

spoked tubless? I would doubt it, I dont think anyone did those on a production bike until BMW on the later Boxers

Nice bike, I had an 83 one, awesome things, run on the smell of an oily rag. wasn't tubeless tires. Twin carbs though, radial valves, and a centre stand!
sigh. I miss her...

Cool, great price and you will learn HEAPS doing this... Only advice is to take pics as you go and label things so you can pick up where you left off if things get interupted (and things will stall at some stage, always happens)...
Good luck...

Cheers guys. It should be a fun little bike when it's done.
AllanB, it was running fine before it was parked up for 10 years so I'm pretty confident it will go, but in the end I'm not too worried if I put the work in for nothing. This is more about the experience than the end result. And yes, the tyres are absolutely poked.
lb99, thanks. I wouldn't have thought there'd be 2 oil filters. I'll take a look tonight.

From memory from the service I had done there was only one oil filter behind LHS case.

After day 3:
Frame is completely stripped and cleaned ready to prep for painting.
Next to do:
1. See if my mechanic friend can give the motor a look over
2. Paint frame and associated parts
3. Paint motor
4. Remount motor
5. Clean out airbox and carbs and remount
6. Hook wiring up and fire up motor...

Get a manual and do it yourself, it's not as hard as you may think and you'll learn more

ok I stand corrected, I do remember some dude raving about mine having spoked tubeless rims, and how flash it was, but I can't find any referance on the net.

I think that was Warwicks way of offering a hand wasn't it? :D

Has anyone got a service manual or even owners manual for one of these. I'm having a hard time finding one

I thought it is basically an XL250 mechanically (someone will correct me if I'm wrong), the frame looks remarkably like the one I've got in the garage. A manual for one of them may be easier to find.
Anyway, they have them at the library in town.
