Shipping a bike overseas?

Does anyone have any experence with this? Such as cost, companies, advice. I may want to take the bike I'm looking at home with me ( Auckland to Vancouver). Slow boat shipping it fine, as the riding season really doesn't start until May.

I'm just traveling around NZ for the next 4 months, and I found a bike, that if i decide to buy, I'll want to ship it back to Vancouver when I return in mid-April.

We recently had a crate built (a fucking good one) for 680. If you're a clever bugger, jut get an old one from a bike shop (they give em away) and modify it to suit your bike.

It's a '99 Suzuki Bandit 1200.

Because I'm backpacking around, It'd be nice to find an option ( highly unlikely to be sure ) of dropping the bike off at one place, having it crated, and shipped. Rather than trying to run around and find a crate, box the bike up, send it to the shipper. After a trip of this magnitude, I'm sure I'd probably pay a little extra to save a lot of time and work.

That would be awesome..... I'll keep you in the loop closer to when I head back. My flight day is April 18, so it'll be before then of course. I'll have to drop off some beer with the bike as an extra than you.

After all is said and done the mods done to this bike make it very unique and ideal for Canadian climate, even with shipping and exchange, it's still worth it to have a wicked souvenir of my time in NZ.

a few companies do it. I shipped a CBR400RR to Vancouver and had a 675 sent the other way. Both pain free and about 750 - 800 plus taxes etc...

Only took 2 and a half weeks too.

As for crating, most bikeshops have them laying outside round the back ready for dumping. You just need to bribe them with beers etc to get one. Its best to visit ahead of time and select one still with a bike in it. That way you get the cardboard cover it came in as well, before it gets tossed outside and gets wet, which aids hiding whats inside the crate. Important if you want it delivered intact. Kawasaki ZX10 ones are pretty rock solid.

You'll need a few tiedowns and lots of tape and thats about it. Make sure its ultra clean, empty of fuel and de registered with all paperwork included. Keep the original docs with you and send the bike with copies of everything. Watch the canadian restriction on bikes newer than 15years though. Only older bikes are allowed in.

Takes about an hour to assemble a crate, tie on the bike and wrap it up. You'll need to plan to do it at the depot its leaving from as you'll need a forklift once its crated.
