View Full Version : So you own a 600... isn't it actually a 598?

From the press release Ixion posted in another thread...
“The Government has opted for more moderate motorcycle levy increases than ACC recommended. Mopeds 50cc and under will pay $129.24; motorbikes up to 600cc will pay $327.70; and bikes over 600cc will pay $426.92. As part of the motorcycle levy, $30 will now be committed to injury prevention modelled on the successful programme in Victoria, Australia. My message to motorcyclists is the escalating costs of motorcycle accidents cannot be ignored but ACC wants to work with you on improving safety."
===

So I ask the question how many of them actually are 600cc or greater?

If I recall correctly ost of the bikes I know that are "600 cc" are actually 598 or so... putting them down a classification and saving about $99/year (+GST).

Or are ACC levies set on marketing rather than engineering data?

I think you'll find it's up to 601cc

Besides, my GSXR is 599cc

aaaaa 'tis a good point. what's the legislation say exactly?

My 600 is apparently 599cc, so I assume it's OK as 'smaller' bike.

The two questions being, will I get potted by the cc nazis if I buy a set of oversize pistons for it, and if I went 1mm oversize and made it 619cc does that make it $100ish more dangerous?

It'll be done on whatever is in the registration papers. to the CC. If you choose to get it changed after a big bore kit or the like then it's your call (and your $99)

and yeah waaaay more dangerous :P

Big bike category is 601cc and above...

The bikes that are really affected is stuff like the SV650, ER6, KTM 690SM... less performance than a supersport 600... but costs a fair whack more

Sooooo...guess I should sell the highly dangerous SV650S (645cc?) with its reckless 72 bhp and buy the 599cc R6 with a much safer 123bhp...that makes sense dunnit?

Hell go for it - ACC said it's the right thing to do and Nick Smith has some data!

... no bloody clues - but he's got data!

Its still a better system than England had in the 20s & 30s where stuff was taxed on bore size. It caused the creation of a bunch of super long stroke under performing piles of crap, which put English vehicles on the backfoot for years.

It's a shitter being a few cc's over but at least it is a fast bike. Feel for those poor bastards with 650 singles...

Like my 39hp KLR650. Currently looking for a KLR600 barrel. Once re-registered,
in will go a 705 kit. Fuck'em.

I think you'll find it's up to 601cc

IIRC, the categories are

up to 125cc
126 to 600cc
601cc and over

So - I reckon go for 600.5cc, and pay nothing :)

It irritates me when official-minded people use discrete values for continuous quantities ... :oi-grr:

Sod it.

I think I'll get a 1340 Hayabusa, bore it out to 1480cc, turbo charge it, add nitros, throw a supercharger on it for a bit more bottom end mojo, tunnel ram it, put helium in the tyres, drill out the frame so it's lighter, remove the brakes for the same reason, go on a diet so I lose 60kg's, enjoy some p, sink a bottle of Jack, and ride with no helmet.
