Is it me or have I noticed that bikers dont wave or nod as much to eachother when passing.
About 10 years back when I was at university (showing my age) I ride my bike (NS400R) often and most of the bikers that I pass nods or waves back. But these days most dont even look at ya let alone wave. I feel strange nodding to myself. Whats up with that? :headbang:

I wave to anything with two wheels and a motor. Most wave back. One thing that does influence things is that it is often hard to wave in time on the motorway.
Even Harleys wave to Li'l Rat Bike, sometimes they even wave first. I've no idea why they approve of him. amused by it's sheer cheek maybe.

I wave to everything except those gay scooters.... and the reason I don't wave to them is in the past when you wave to them all you get back is confused, fearful stares..................

I try to nod or wave most passing bikes except scooters. Dont know why. Maybe the scooter guys dont expect it.

having riden a scooter, it was more of a way of getting from a to b, now riding a bike it's more about what happens while i'm going from a-b and riding a proper bike you tend to be looking at what others are riding, still love those gsx250's (for a learner bike) they just look so good!

I wave at pretty much everything... bmws/harleys almost never wave (I must be to riced for them or something  ) and scooters... mabey a 30% sucess rate. I got more nods/waves from cops than those categories :/
Coolest nod/wave I got was from a rather crazily speeding cbr going up symonds street just as I left uni... looked up from perving the R1 thats outside the arts building every day, ''wEEEEUUUmmmmm' and I get a nod :niceone: made my day hehehe.

I usually just nod to people, but sometimes I wave. I don't think I've ever had anyone on a scooter wave back though, I guess it's true that they're mostly just a way of getting from a to b.

I am well convinced that if a harley rider ever lifted an arm, to wave at a Jappa, hell would freeze over, Hellen Clarke's gender would be confirmed, and monkeys would fly out of my butt! Since those things are unlikely to happen, ( though the monkey thing is possible. Took me a whle to get them in there.) we should wave at all, and hope for a response. Stick together and all that :drinknsin

I usually give a fellow biker a nod, or some times a wave with the left hand. Don't wave to scooters tho. Does that make me a snob? I just think scooters are sad, unless it's a hot girl in the saddle :yeah:
Interestingly I don't usually get any response from the 'Bros on Harleys. Only middle aged euro guys and gals. Guess they're too hard to nod back to another guy on a bike.
I do get spontaneous nods and waves from sports bike riders tho, and I'm on a 250 cruiser, huh go figure.

I wave at most bikes  , usually don't bother with Harleys, BMW's. .... they never wave back.
Sometimes, it is quite difficult to wave / nod on the motorway. It is not because you don't want to but you are just not concentrating on traffic heading the other way. You are focused on changing lanes, traffic behind etc... Sometimes I wave / nod and the biker heading the other way doesn't even notice me.
I do thank cage drivers that pull over when I am behind or move to the left. We need more considerate drivers like that.

When on the motorway I find that I don't get a chance to have a look at the oncomming traffic unless I am in the immediate right lane. But whenever I pass or see a bike in all other situations I always give a wave type of salute or a head nod - and I would say the majority of riders repay the gesture.
I always get little kids that point and wave to me, even had a few staring and waving at me whilst looking through their cars rear windscreen.

I wave to anyone on a bike and any kids waving at me from the side of the road - I like to encourage their interest in bikes. I also wave at cops, ambos, fire trucks. Any scooter being buffeted by pissing rain and gusting wind in the middle of winter is definitely worthy of a wave.

Harleys seem to wave (or at least return waves) when I am on Li'l Rat Bike. Or, at any rate , nod or raise a thumb, which I guess amounts to the same. No idea why, I'd have thought Li'l Rat Bike would be the last thing they'd have approved of.

I'll give a wave when it's easily possible. Otherwise it's a nod, unless I'm taking a turn at traffic lights. Funnily enough it's the bus drivers that will give me the occasional wave and a nod at the lights.
Zed
29th April 2005, 22:18
Apart from general "biker discrimination" this waving/nodding/saluting issue really comes down to the mood you and the approaching rider are in at the time surely? If I'm in a happy-go-lucky jolly mood (normally only on weekends :D) I'll acknowledge most bikes coming the other way, if I'm not so happy then the number of times I give out a friendly wave will be reduced...of course it's the same with all of us because that is *normal* human behaviour! (I wonder if Whinger waves??) When you've ridden on the road for a while you will come to the realisation that some days you will wave to bikes more than others and in the same vein waves will be returned more some days than others, all based on emotion!

This is an oldie but a goodie - some might not have seen it:
Why Bikers Don't Wave Back
Top Ten Reasons Why Harley Riders Don't Wave Back:
10. - Afraid it will invalidate warranty.
9. - Leather and studs make it too hard to raise arm.
8. - Refuses to wave to anyone whose bike is already paid for.
7. - Afraid to let go of the handlebars because they might vibrate off.
6. - Rushing wind would blow scabs off the new tattoos.
5. - Angry because just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley.
4. - Just discovered the fine print in owner's manual and realized H-D is partially owned by those rice-burner manufacturers.
3. - Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else.
2. - Remembers the last time a Harley rider waved back, he impaled his hand on spiked helmet.
1. - They're jealous that after spending $30,000, they still don't own a Gold Wing.
Top Ten Reasons Why Gold Wing Riders Don't Wave Back:
10. - Wasn't sure whether other rider was waving or making an obscene gesture.
9. - Afraid might get frostbite if hand is removed from heated grip.
8. - Has arthritis and the past 400 miles have made it difficult to raise arm.
7. - Reflection from etched windshield momentarily blinded him.
6. - The expresso machine just finished.
5. - Was actually asleep when other rider waved.
4. - Was in a three-way conference call with stock broker and accessories dealer.
3. - Was distracted by odd shaped blip on radar screen.
2. - Was simultaneously adjusting the air suspension, seat height, programmable CD player, seat temperature and satellite navigation system.
1. - Couldn't find the "auto wave back" button on the dashboard.

When I was younger I waved at British bike riders,They chased me an beat me up.
Then I got a 250 an they couldn't catch me. :msn-wink:
So I waved at Ducati riders(they were different back then)an they chased me an beat me up.
So I got me a 750 an they couldn't catch me,unless some sod put corners in the road. :msn-wink:
So the day came I bought an HD,I waved but no bugger belived it,I found out I wasn't suppoused to wave, because nobody would belive it,and the other HD riders wouldn't belive it either. :msn-wink:
Now I wave to no bugger,an they still want to beat me up.

Truckies do a quick left right off on their indicators. Has the advantage of being able to be done even when both hands are needed and visible at night.
Mr Plod might complain though.
I think any special signal would be hard to spot, it's difficult as it is to pick up the different possibilities of wave, nod, thumb lift, foot waggle (Continentals. Strange lot) .
Of course, for some KBers the answer is simple - just throw greeting and acknowledgement wheelies :devil2:

lets just say it's slow, and i don't like the cruiser style, and i keep scraping the foot pegs, which is starting to get annoying, but i like sports bikes a lot more, oh and the bike feels to small for me, i'm only 5'10" but yeah it's just not comfortable, but is that your gsx on highgate?

Highgate? Maori hill? I wish I lived there. - Nah it's not my bike.
I have a GSX250S, do not get a GSX250 they are ass. Maybe older GSX250 bikes were 4 cylinder. But I guess the new ones arn't for speed. They are probably bloody reliable though.
Maybe you will be able to pick out a cheap CBR in Dunedin somewhere? If you dislike your SR get a 4 cylinder.
Provided you don't crash my bike, maybe you could test it sometime? If you like ;p
It's a 40hp at the crank 4 cylinder. But it gets cleaned up by CBRs easily.

what the cbr250's? but then the cbr's are normally twice as expensive as the gsx's (another reason to like the gsx250's) but you reckon the ones to look out for are the gsx250s how much should i expect to pay for an early 90's one with aroun 30-40,000k's on it? nothings really decided at the moment i probably need to save up another grand or so before i can even start looking around for another bike, then theres the increase in my insurance etc. probably wouldn't want to test drive another person's bike unless i was considering buying it, sort of sounds like asking for trouble :msn-wink: but thanks for the offer
campbellluke
30th April 2005, 00:06
That's no problem. The offer is always up though.
I am uneducated at bike market rates to tell you any pricings of anything.
If you think that your 250 is slow, get a 4 cylinder. Or a 2 stroke. I have said this to a few people and yet they go out and buy GSX250 . And curse about how slow they are.
Just look up specifications of bikes. If you want some power, you will be looking at 40hp - 45hp at the crank.
Also. I have ridden a VTR250, they are a pretty cool bike!
A GSX250 may be good to look at? Yes, if it has 4 cylinders. I don't know if Suzuki ever made a such thing?
My bike is a Grey bike ( sold in Japan only ) , which I got imported. Quite different to a GSX250 though. Similar in some ways to the 90-92 Suzuki bandits.
250s that are good - cbr zxr gsxs-katana gsxf-bandit fzr250 fzr250rr vtr - many more to list. I can't think of them though.
MAYBE a fzr cheap? They are a really awesome bike to ride. 180km+ bike 19,000 rpm redline. Little brother bought one a few years ago for $1200. If you ever see one, they should be cheap. Because of their age. Sadly yamaha doesn't still make FZR.
In a years time I will be hoping to get a FZR600 .. maybe 1000. I love FZRs. If you still are looking then maybe you would like to test ride mine.
gamgee
30th April 2005, 00:15
yeah a mate of mine has an fzr, hopefully he'll sell it soon ;) was actually looking at a bandit a few months ago but got out bid on it on trademe in the last minute, and yeah i know they're a good bike, just damn hard to find, thats the only one i've ever seen in dunedin, and now i get to see it parked down at uni just about every day  wouldn't get a 2 stroke though, to much maintanance for me, i think some of the older gsx's were 4 cylinder, i'm actually also considering one of those dirty little fxr's which actually go like rockets considering the tiny little engine, but i think they might be a bit small height wise for me, i've seen a few of them and they always look so small, dunno will have a look around at the end of the year but definitely going to be a sports bike, i'm sick of getting mistaken for a damn harley and having downs syndrome kids coming up to me and saying 'nice harley' jeeeeez don't they know the difference between a japanese cruiser and a hardley?

One of the greatest things I have found in the last 11 months of riding is the waving and nodding, its brillant.
I try and wave when i can, I notice that most riders in Auckland will give a nod, not many wave.
If someone does not give a nod or a wave they are the exception not the rule.
To answer your original quesiton!
No I don't wave because I'm sitting on the bus when I see you guys :P

Wave to bikes if I have a free hand.

i've seen a few bikes lately... i nodded to them all but none of them nod back... <_<
Problem is its harder to tell if you nod..... well thats my opinioun I preferr to wave..
.
.
I wave to all bikes except if I'm in mid-corner and it's unsafe, in which case I nod.
It's a nice feeling when people wave back - there's a real camaraderie amongst us.

I normally wave or nod if my hands are too busy :msn-wink: and usually get a response. Kids in kages get a kick out of a wave from someone on a bike - they don't realise its a grey haired old bugger not some koool dude
....they don't realise its a grey haired old bugger not some koool dude
or a no-haired old bugger :D
one of the many advantages of a full face helmet...
When I see a tinted visor helmet nodding, it seems to look more noticable. I was down on Oteha Vally Rd Off Ramp yesterday and a guy on a TL1000 came past (he had clear visor) I waved and I could see a nod and a smile. I am not gay, but it was pretty cool. :niceone:
I wave to all bikes except scooters and dudes dressed in black on harleys or similars, coz they're always way too cool to wave back.... Yeah right!!!
Reading these posts, I'm just wondering if it's the Orclanders that are experiencing the lack of responses. I find at least 70-80% of Wellington riders wave back. (Thats Excluding the Harley riders coz they can't see you through the sunlight streaming out of their :moon: )
Sorry, I know not all Harleys are like that, but too many are!

I am sure more people would wave at me if I glued little Panda ears to me helmet like the (presumptive) young lady in another posting. I must try it and see.
I wave to all bikers when I can.. Sometimes you just cant because your taking a sharp corner or dont see them till its too late or whatever, but 99% of the time I will wave.
I've had HD riders wave at me *shock horror* and I've had plenty of sports bike riders NOT wave at me. I think people just get a bit hung up on stereotypes. As for me when I'm rich and get myself a HD or a brit bike, I'll still wave to all you fellas on ricers :-)
Oh and for the record I dont wave to scooters. I think part of that is because no-one ever waved to me when I used to ride my TR-50 :-P

I don't wave to niggers either because I don't see why they should be allowd to own bikes....I don't wave to girls either because they should be at home cleaning up the mess.
If I ever see you on a bike remind me to give you a finger instead of ignoring a sports bike as I usualy do.

Yeah, the kids are great! They get so excited!
And like RDJ said, the helmet (and gear) is good for disguising your oldness/baldness/unkewlness. Although I ride the VifFerraRi, so I'm naturally kewl, very kewl.
I wave/nod/gesticulate to everyone (and say some interesting things inside my helemt to those who don't wave back).

When I first started riding I waved to everything - including large groups of patched riders! Hey, I was going the other way, it's not like they were going to turn around and chase me for WAVING, right! Now I still pretty much wave to everyone except idiots on bikes with ape hangers, I figure they would crash if they attempted to wave so I don't want to take the risk...
As for BMW and Gold Wing riders not waving back, I find that hard to believe - my husband and I both have BMWs and we always wave. I went for a ride yesterday and had a Gold Wing rider blip his indicator at me (too scared to take his hand off the bars obviously!), but the norm is a wave or a nod. It took me a while to master the nod, but I think I have it now!
I find a lot of sports bike riders don't wave - and it doesn't seem to matter what I am riding when I wave at them. I don't wave to scooters either, unless they wave first!
I always acknowlege drivers if they pull over to let me pass (bit of a pain on our club's economy run - no way of letting them know that you don't want to go faster than 90kph or you'll lose!) and I always give arseholes to those who don't. Haven't managed to kick a door in yet (short legs) but sorely want to at times. My better half has a great way of letting them know they are tossers - he pulls up alongside their rear door and opens it! Amazing how quickly they move out your way when that happens!

I have noticed that most of the waves/nods seem to be out on the open road. I myself usually restrict it to the open road.

I tend to wave on the open road and nod around town when my hands need to be on both bars more.
When I lived in Wellington I used to pull up at the lights and nod to other riders there and I heard one say to his mate one day "hey, it's a chick!" Yeah, this is 2005 mate, not 1905!
I wave when I'm riding pillion too, just in case the rider is busy or doesn't notice!

I rode to Wellington and back on Sunday and found I had VERY few waves, despite waving to everyone I passed on a bike! The gang members I can understand, but the rest had no excuse. The worst offenders were the ones on little bikes like FXRs, RGVs and small cruisers! Not sure if they were learners or just riders who like small bikes, but NONE of them waved. The best response was from a guy on a Suzuki in flash leathers who actually turned in his seat to wave while I was stopped at a petrol station in Levin - thanks mate! One pillion nearly fell off waving enthusiastically, but it was a very poor show overall I thought.
Maybe it was the black bike and black gear - perhaps I looked too threatening to wave at - yeah right!

bmws/harleys almost never wave
The Harley riders don't wave 'cause they know they'll loose control if they tried to ride with one hand.
The BMW riders don't wave 'cause they are all so anal retentive that they don't want to take the chance that their mummy's/ wives/ therapist will see them riding dangerously (i.e. one handed) and tell them off....

and to the doggies and little birdies in the trees
WTF are the doggies doing up in the trees?!?!?!?!?!
Sounds like a terrier I once had: It was having a game with our cat - chasing each other around yard, terrier's turn to chase, cat runs towards tree - sloping trunk slightly sloping, very broad, branch spits off trunk about three feet off ground - cat tears up trunk and along branch, terrier follows...
Terrier now about 5 feet off ground on rapidly narrowing branch, unable to go forward, unable to back up, trembling a lot, surprised cat is in the thin bushy stuff staring at terrier in disbelief/mirth/both...

Depends on the kind of bike it was. Cruiser he would be waving, sportie would probably just be readjusting his nuts.
I'll wave, nod, whatever to other bikes and scooters aswell if they don't ride like cagers drive. Here is how you can tell a scooter rider is on it as a step to getting a big bike. Wave to them, if they wave back then they want to upgrade. If not they just on it cause they can't get a car.
