I keep plugging away with letters to the local paper. Every one has been printed so far. Yay for me, huh? There's been little to no comment or response letters though.
My latest one...

Dear Sir

It is a pity that my last letter on the subject of ACC wasn’t printed until after Nick Smith announced his decision on levies. My point, all along, was to draw attention to what was facing most of us who pay levies. Now that we know what the various rates are to be, and they are still inequitable, the time has come to shed a little more light on what else to expect.

Motorcyclists are still being singled out of the motorpool for an unfairly high levy increase, as well as the 3 tier levy rate based on engine size. Nothing like that is seen for cars (yet), or for the various model sizes/styles. After all, using manufacturers tests and crash statistics, different makes and models do have different risk ratings. Should small cars, which fare badly in accidents, pay more than a ‘flash’ car with more airbags than bodywork? What about SUVs? Should they pay less because their occupants aren’t generally hurt when such a vehicle has a meeting with an MX5? Or should they pay more, because their potential to create carnage is so much greater than that of a little car? Motorcycles are just the start of risk-rating on vehicles.

Barring m/c levies, car levies, earner and employer levies have been raised a small amount. Again. In 2008, an employee paid 78 cents/$100, that jumped to $1.70/$100 this year and next year it’ll be $2/$100. But no increase on the petrol levy this time. We can all be somewhat relieved at that news. Or can we? All the signs are there for us to recognise that this ‘backdown’ by the minister is only temporary. He’ll be back next year for some more. And the year after that.

We still do not know what is going to be cut on the entitlement side. But the signs are there, too. We know that counselling for rape victims is on the chopping block. We know that workplace deafness is to be reassessed at a higher level of hearing loss. We know that injured workers requiring earnings related compensation may not get their 80% quickly, or without significant hassle. We know that if you have holiday pay owing, that must be used up before any compo can start – yet an injured worker is not on holiday. We know that low paid and seasonal work are slated to lose any ERC entitlement. We know that recipients of ERC may be pushed back into work before they are fit, or into some other work with less hours than they had before their injury. We know that physiotherapy is likely to be cut. We know that injury treatment at doctors will cost you more than now, perhaps as much as $100, before ACC picks up the tab.

What is happening to ACC, and it’s precepts? Community responsibility. Comprehensive entitlement. Complete rehabilitation. Real compensation. Administrative efficiency.

I think we know. But will we accept it? I won’t.

They usually take a little time to organise themselves. There is a fair bit of consultation going on with members etc.
