View Full Version : Buffstar's accident at Paparimu!

Some of you will know our mate Buffstar (Buffy). She's written some colourful posts here! She was doing her last lap at Paparimu and had a pretty bad accident. She was looked at by paramedics and airlifted to Middlemore.

She was status 1 last night as she has broken ribs, can't remember how many, could be 5, and one had pierced her lung! They thought she had broken her shoulder and her collarbone, but the bruising is bad and they can't be sure. Will give you an update!

Poor Buffy, only 13 months ago she broke her wrist and hurt her pelvis!

Thinking of you my friend.

Oh hell, so that was buffstar? Was it that last little jump on the right? (Gave myself a fright on that the first time round, nearly ran out of room to take the corner after it). You could see the chopper was having some trouble finding location. Hopefully she's plugged into plenty of morphine and feeling a bit better. Get well soon Buff, keep us updated Midge.

Hi all!
I am Buffys partner. She's had a rough 24 hours thats for real. Findings thus far is 3 broken ribs (pretty bloody bad breaks), broken collarbone, punctured lung, severe bruising internally of her chest and shoulder.
The docs and nurses are looking after her really well and got her does up on lots of pain relief & currently have her in the ICU at Middlemore hospital. Currently trying to get her breathing and pain under control with some internal bleeding.
As for the Marshalls and the Volunteer fire crew at the ride yesterday what a bunch of fan bloody tastic people. especially Bob & Ron from the Hunua Fire Service and Scott from MR Motorcycles F@#ken well done guys the damage would have been a lot worse without your speed and knowledge of how to help.
Thanks to all those of you that have called me with your best wishes and I am sure Buffy will appreciate your thoughts also. I will try and keep everyone up to date with her progress.

Not much fun for you either chichi. Good work with the guys veering riders well away from the scene. Hard to be lying on the deck with everyone still riding around. That must have been a pretty hard slam. Has she said how it happened? Any trouble with concussion as well?

BTW need to be aware that morphine can be a problem with suppressing breathing reflex.

Yes the marshalls and fire crew did an awesome job!
Basically she came up to the turn with a bit of speed and grabbed a bit too much front brake and the bike slid out from underneath her, from what I can tell, and she endoed herself and came down hard on her shoulder and back, most of the damage seems to have come from having her fire extinguisher in her camel back and landing very hard on it! No concussion. BLOODY great bruise on her shoulder, very proud of it actually. This is what caused the ribs to break!
Spirits are getting better and they are taking great care of her.
The morphine has made her a bit wasted but now they have the pain under relative control and now she is doin much better, still in HDU Middlemore tho. hopefully they will transfer her to a ward tomorrow. They expect her to be home with us by Xmas.

I was just ahead of Buffy when she came to grief and went back straight away and stayed with her til she got the fancy ride outa there. Gotta say that chick is made of tough stuff, one of the guys thought she may just have severe bruising because of the way she coped...! Yeah man, no fire extinguishers on your backs people, some of us had that discussion before we took off but I guess you don't think it will happen to you. Huge applause for the rescuers/marshalls/medics and ride organizers for having such fantastic help at the ready. Also handy that we were so close to the paddock for easy chopper landing...

I've just done similar (off an 80 too), pulled the bone a bit but not right off. Did it first thing in morning, rode for another 4.5 hrs, the adrenalin stopped the pain i think???? The night onwards it started hurting.

Well guys & gals, here is update on Buffy's condition. Improving day by day, pain relief seems to be sorted (getting wasted for for free LOL) lung is on the mend and bones are still bloody sore. Hopefully she will be moved to ward in the next couple of days. Getting bored as can be expected and hanging out for a cigarette (4 days without imagine the mood). Hospital food is not that desirable but at least she's eating and drinking well! Not much more to report but i will keep you posted with her progress! Great to hear progress is being made, very painful injurys indeed. I suffered similar injurys 3 years ago, 6 ribs, 7 spinal process, punchered lung and a broken ankle, got a morphed out chopper ride as well ! This has got to be the best way ever concieved to give up smoking, I haven't touched one since, the thought of even a slight cough in the first 2 months of recovery was too scary to risk and if you think you are going to sneeze rubbing your eyes seemed to work. Try and get a positive out of this situation and give the smokes up. 2 months of discovery channel, playstation and tramadol and you'll be good to go again. Good luck and all the best with your recovery!

Yeha Buffstar is on the mend, though not out of HDU yet! Went to visit today! She's still hanging out for a fag, would be a great time to give up for sure! She's out of the bed and in a chair, which is awesome. Lucky enough to be next door to someone that was chanting and singing in Indian. Buffy had a few choice words to say about that! She's thinking about getting a road bike! Oh my god!!! She's not selling the dirt bike yet either!

Wouldn't have thought it possible for a fire extinguisher to do so much damage through a bladder, back pack and a roost guard, but will take notice for the future. Not sure I'll change my ways however.

Ohh no that would hurt, less down there for padding.
Been a few years since I landed on my back. Worst part was the bike landing on top of me and the tip of my tail pipe pinning about 2mm of my scrotum into the ground while the rear wheel spun around on my chest, could of been heaps worse! Only ended up with a small burn to the sack, and a totalled pipe and radiator hose.

I know I'm probably overthinking all this because Buffstar is a mate, but I wonder whether it should be included in briefings as to the appropriate positioning for a fire extinguisher. Also just the basics if you're the first to arrive at the scene of an accident! I know that we took Buffstar's helmet off when she had her last 'off'. Apparently you should never, never take off someone's helmet in case there's a neck injury! We just didn't know that! I've now also been told don't move them at all and to wait until someone qualified comes along!

L Rider
17th December 2009, 18:24
Mini MX is coming down hard on what to do when a kid comes off. Ambo guys have been speaking at the last few briefings. Very important to not move them or try & pick them up which is often a reaction with parents to just grab their kid up to get off the track.
If they can get up themselves then thats all good let them.
I know with Roadbike accidents the only time you should remove a helmet is if its making it difficult for them to breathe or if they're not breathing & need cpr. Otherwise leave on.

As for fire extinguishers perhaps it should be outlined where best place is to put one but really at end of day its personal choice i suppose - people know the risks, choice is theirs.

motor_mayhem
17th December 2009, 23:07
I wonder if people are reading into it a bit much. You could put the extinguisher on the front guard or some other place and then find that a huge impact from a jump causes it to launch itself into your face or some other thing. Like the rest of life, sometimes stuff goes wrong. Unlike the rest of life there is a lot more inherent risk with dirt bikes so when it goes wrong, it goes horrific.

But I wouldn't swap the thrills for anything :2thumbsup

I do hear what you're saying & realise there are risks but somethings are more risker than others.
in my eyes there would be a greater chance of falling off & landing on an extinguisher when its on your back than there would be of it coming off the front guard into your face.
Thats why i don't think you can tell people where they have to carry it but think that knowledge of the risks can go along way.

I must admit I did cable tie mine to my hydrapak at the last ride.
But usually I wrap in a towel and its in my backpack, my hydrapak also fits in the backpak.
I think if I have my armour on and its wrapped in a towel it would be a good effort for it to damage me.
I had a good look at my bike last night and think it would be pretty easy to fit it inside the rear gaurd under the airbox cavity.
Right now its on my handlebars, which I also dont like.
Dam these rules ....

Dam these rules ....

I wear a pressure suit with an armadillo back, I'm hoping that will deflect most of the punishment should I land on my camelbak which has a tyre pando aerosol inside.

FlyingCR was good to loan me one of his extinguishers which I taped across the handlebar. The bars do not have a cross brace. After I washed the bike and removed the bottle I was horrified to see 2 deep gouge marks in the light alloy casing, caused by the bolt heads holding the bar clamps down. They look pretty deep and I reckon I was fortunate they didn't penetrate deeper. If they had I would've had a very nasty surprise.

Yeah damn this silly rule.

I knocked off my extinguisher that was cable tied to my crossbar with my sternum at the paparimu ride....I'm never putting it there again as it still hurts. I then strapped it to my camelback but after reading this thread I'll give that a miss next time too. I think next time I'll make a foam surround to mount it vertically on the front light/number board.

Its fairly easy to mount an extinguisher on the KDX. Pop it down behind the head light and secure it with cable ties.

A less intrusive spot would be to sit it opposite the muffler. Just need to make sure the rear wheel is going to clear it once the suspension compresses.

Any update on her status?

Yeah, just called Buffy and they're letting her out! She was only meant to come out for a few hours Christmas Day! She wasn't having any of that. Go Buffstar, awesome to hear you're sort of up and about. Have a wonderful Xmas at home with loved-ones and don't be shy of ordering them around, for the next few weeks, their only purpose in life is to make you happy....

Welcome home Buffy- You are an inspiration!

Hey and Daniel Price is out of Middlemore too!
-He was taken out in that head on accident in the Maramarua 3 Day...

His new KTM needs a grand spent on it to get it sweet and his leg is a tangle of titanium but he is home with his mum, dad and big sisters for christmas.
