I have an idea which invovles making a product that requires electrical current.

My dad who has a licence to make stuff for his company is trying to desuade me of making said product till I get my licence.

Ok, so what's this got to with bikes?

Well, on a racetrack you can ride without a road licence, ride a bike that doesn't have a WOF or Rego. So why can't you make a device which aides in racing but doesn't actually get taken on the track?

Am I missing a great big point here due to stuborness or is does my dad need to learn a thing or two? (either option is upsetting)

His points are as follows.

-If it's made by a qualified electrician, it's OK
-If it is under 110v, it's OK
-If it has little to no electrical interference, it's OK
-If it passes a ESTI specifications, it's OK

He also keeps going on about these little stickers with his number on them which he puts on everything he alters/makes/installs.....?

My point is

It's on a race track....different rules apply.....

.....do they or don't they?
I don't particularly care who's right or wrong in this case, but what I actually have to do to make my product.... when I do, it'll hopefully benefit our little racing community.

No, it has got to adhere to the electrical regulations no matter where it is.
Are the buildings at the race track exempt from the building regulations?

Common sense really.....
Just because race vehicles are exempt from road use regulations, doesn't mean that all laws are null and void at a race track. Otherwise people could perhaps murder each other at race meetings. Still, it would be an even greater spectator sport.......

Heya Slippy

A few points:

Your solar powered bike would only be low voltage DC - which means you do not need to be a registered electrician to do it.

You would need: Electric motor(s), lightweight deep cycle batteries (power smoothing), solar collectors, charging circuitry, motor speed controller and assorted cut-off switches and control potentiometers (to disable the bike under certain circumstances and to instruct the controller box how much juice to feed to the motor(s)).

You'd probably be looking at anything from 12 to 72 volts DC - well under 110VDC - probably around the 24-48V mark as a good trade off of power and mass of batteries/solar collectors (which have to be carried on the damn thing).

Motors are rated in continous power, not peak (can peak at up to 20 times the rated continuous wattage) and have a different power dynamic from IC engines.

The power and performance of electric motors is proven - look at the Wellington Unit and the electric passenger trains that travel the length of the North Island. OK, they're higher voltage and very powerful motors but the vehicles are also thousands of times heavier than what you're envisioning...

I am extremely interested in electric vehicles, home EV conversions etc. And I am right behind anyone who wants to look into the possibilities.

Don't let anyone tell you your dreams are unrealistic. Other people have done similar - and who knows, you might be the one who, having studied what others have done and played around with it a bit, makes the discovery that revolutionises the field.

Everyone remembers James Watt in association with steam engines and his name is given to the unit of power - but he did not invent the steam engine - steam engines were already in use and James Watt was skilled in their repair. What he did, was improve the steam engine to the point that a whole new era of steam power was ushered in.

Nurture your dreams - read, research, cogitate - you could be the future "James Watt" of the solar vehicle for all we know. If you want info and resources, PM me and I'll send you what I have for starters.

I've been told that this type of thing along with DIY building in your own home is soon to be a thing of the past :(

Unless you are a fully qualified plumber/electrician/builder...you will not be able to lift a finger except to decorate...and I bet it will be little time after that when the interior designers will stomp their heels in demand of the same law change.

I remember every house I lived in with my father got redone in some way by him. Heck, my first house I _ever_ lived in was built by him.

Solar is good - but it depends on what you're looking to drive with the power generated. You're not going to get much current from a couple of cheap solar panels. So solar power on a cost/effectiveness basis might be a non starter.

Any electrical device is subject to type approvals for the country/region they'll be used in. These are pretty easy to achieve (but costs $$$$) providing that it doesn't catch fire, explode, transmit RF/magnetic interference etc.

Stick to it mate, this idea may be a flyer. Sound it out a bit more.

That depends on how dark it is and how much capacity your battery has.
Were you aware that you can still get solar energy from street lamps and moon/starlight?

Already mentioned about making fairings and even fairing blades out of solar panels.

There's also solar liquid collectors...called amorphous crystals.

As far as I know there are 3 types of crystal.
Mono-crystals: the one that looks like a square with cut off corners. Usually greyish in colour.
These are the most efficient collectors. They are grown and sliced into panels. More expensive.
Multi-crystals: the rectangle ones that look like blue chipboard.
These are the most used. These are bits and pieces all sorta melted together into a block then sliced into panels. Cheaper.
Amorphous-crystals: to be honest, I have learnt much about this stuff yet...it's not really on the public market so much at the moment. But from what I understand it's a liquid compound and doesn't have a long life...about 3 years I think.

But solar panels are far ahead these days that every window you see, could potentially be a solar panel...think of your skylight........

my theory would have been that a race track is not a public road so you can ride a non-road legal bike. you have to convice the scrutineers that its not going to hurt anyone or hire the venue for a day though. like you cant have glass or mirrors on a bike on trackday.

perhaps test it on a country road or something. im sure a few KB'rs can close a road for 30mins before ppl get suspicios. anyone got a few orange vests?

What about putting a real grid under the "grid". And passing radio frequency EMR through it. If the RF was collapsed, it should generate a magnetic field in the wires of the tyre. Repeat often (ie pulse the RF), and in theory the tyre should get hot.

No idea whether this would work, just a mindless ramble.

Why has everything always got to be technological and complicated . What's wrong with the good oldfashioned way, setting fire to the tyres. Once you're racing, the slipstream blows out the flames (Or , Slipstream blows out the flames ? ). Didn't you know, that's why the Manx start was invented, cos riders couldn't sit on their bikes waiting for the start, cos of the flames from the burning tyres setting fire to their [ at this point Mr Hitcher is waiting with bated breath] a**es [Mr Hitcher suffers apoplexy not knowing ]

I know it seems silly, but some people just don't see some threads....even Urgent ones :(

Now back to electrics on bikes...Do they have computer chips like some cars do?

Well said. Blessed are the peacemakers. Yes modern bikes have computer chips (ECUs , Engine Control Units) and like cars they can be "chipped". Some of the sports bike chaps will be able to tell you more about this

Dude you should know better than to try starting something about that. Poor taste mate. I havn't posted that much about it either for much the same reasons as WINJA.

Anyway you can ignore this post now cause I don't have much to say on what you are trying to do Slip. I don't know all that much about motorbike electrics and I have already told you what I know about Solar pannels, so I am just going to shut up now.

But I can't say nuthin...I'd still need help with the general needs of bike anatomy

Meh, thought I'd have a go at being like WINJA/mikey etc but nah, didn't do anything for me, I guess you have to have a penchant for that kind of thing.
I'll leave that side of things to them.

I'll just carry on being me :D

Still dude given the subject you were ripping him on that's just low and incredibly disrepectfull to others. If you havn't noticed, Winja, mikey and others have toned thier shit down recently. If you were trying to be more like them you failed and went beyond where I think even they are capable of going.

well, after a lengthly conversation with my dad, i've come to the conclusion that making a solar powered bike right now would be a bit tame. The speed you'd get wouldn't be that great. I will look into it again when I've made my first couple of millions tho.
I want to make a race bike first ya see.
So I was wondering...has anyone seen or heard about a hybrid bike?
Apparently hybrid cars go as fast as gas guzzlers.

You could essentially cut the weight down in ya race bike by reducing the amout needed for petrol ... go on the smell of an oily rag sorta thing. Plus the battery could be smaller...but then would you use that weight lost in electrics??
Damn, I knew I shoulda taken mechanical engineering, instead of electrical engineering ..... :(

Anyone know how to make a proper battery? I mean is it possible?
A plastic box...acid...terminals and away you go???
I mean I could get a barrel of lemons and stick copper wire through them to make a circuit...but I think that would just look a little queer...

I have plans ya see...big plans and one day i'm gonna TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!...er I mean finish my plans....yeah....

Acid batteries are sooooooo 90's.

What you want is a Lithium Iron of Nickel Metal Hydride. More power, less weight and far less prone to the dreaded 'memory effect' than othe types.

There are loads of ways to make your own battery. it depends on what kind of power you need. You can even make a battery using your own bodily fluids. And I don't mean the yucky ones.

So I made my first tyre warmer the other day at my uncle's house (he's a sparky :niceone: )
Looked real good ...till it melted :o
....the "heat-resistant" material, wasn't so heat resistant after all :(

But at least I know the electrics work :D Now I maybe just need to put a higher resistor into it....and find some better material....I found some "wadding" that might be a goer....

Anyone know where I might be able to get hold of a second hand fire blanket?

"New fuel cell opens way for artificial hearts

May 13 2005 at 09:10AM

Tokyo - A Japanese research team has developed a fuel cell that runs on blood without using toxic substances, opening the way for use in artificial hearts and other organs.

The biological fuel cell uses glucose, a sugar in blood, with a non-toxic substance used to draw electrons from glucose, said the team led by Matsuhiko Nishizawa, bio-engineering professor at the graduate school of state-run Tohoku University.

"Since the electron mediator is based on Vitamin K3, which exists in human bodies, it excels in safety and could in the future generate power from blood as an implant-type fuel cell," the group said in a statement.

Most other bio-fuel cells under study use a metal complex, spawning concern about harm if used for implants.

The newly developed cell in the size of a tiny coin is able to generate 0,2 milliwatts of electricity, enough to power a device that measures blood sugar level and transmits data elsewhere, the group said. -

Yup - go to any electrical good repair place. They'll have heaps opf them about now (they all come in for testing at the start of winter - and any with broken wiring get biffed).

... no offence Biffy...

A quick ring around ought to do it, and if they worryt about unsafe goods being handed over, get them to cut the plug/lead off at the blanket.

I'm trying to invent something that uses solar panels as well.
A couple of questions peoples might help me with.

1. How do you measure the 'power' (energy), of the available light hitting the panel?
2. where can I get transparent panels?

Thanks.

Actually MDU - I only realised last week that the term Biff'd implies something is broken. I therefore demand that, from this point forward, the entire nation refrains from using this word, unless you're referring to me of course, of which there is just the one, unique, sexy, talented, egotestical, studmuffin.

I am not broken, all my bits work fine thanks, and I have the photos to prove it. :msn-wink:

ok - now I think you're mad... scary, remarkably funny... but mad too.

I can see we'll also need to discuss your condition over a few fine bottles of vino - for medicinal reasons of course
