Camera - Electronics question

Anyone here with an electronics background or understanding? Obviously I don't have a clue, but would it be possible to remove the screen from the handycams you see around, and extend the wires via donors, and still make it work providing the wires are hooked up to the correct ones? eg cut them midway between the camera and the screen, and connect an extra meter or so of wire in between each cut wire. Would this work? Or would there be complications because of the added wire?

It's quite likely that this would succeed. Often with such things, the only way to know for sure is to try.

Sure. I guess I'll buy the cheapest handycam I can find and about a kilometer of elec wire haha. Only problem I can think of is the different conductivity of the extra wire (different materials)? Maybe that would affect it?

potential complications due to the added capacitance and inductance in the longer wires, safer to do as leviticus said, but the more kiwi way is to go buy some wires! shielding and grounding the shield is a very good idea too

Hmm. What's the worst that could happen if the wires increased or decreased the actual voltage getting to the monitor? Just low signal, or would it probably not run at all? A seperate monitor would be best, but I'm not sure I could find one (that is self powered) of the right size to suit.

I think you will find that there isn't wires between the screen and the camera, instead there will most likely be a flexy cable made up of laminated copper strips which cannot be cut and joined.:(

They cant increase the voltage, but any joins in the wires may increase the resistance and degrade the signal. Also the extra length of cable will do the same. Just how much longer were you thinking of.?

Depending on the proximity of the different signal pathways on the strip yo may be able to do this. Of course, you're screwed if it's a multilayered strip.

However, anything can be done if you're resourceful and determined. My main concern would be any potential latency due to the impedence of the extra wire causing timing issues between the CCD and the processing chip.

rear view cam? can get small screens and remote cameras for pretty cheap atm

Get the best cable possible - gold plated if you have to. This will minimise your losses.
Have seen it done on about 20cm lengths, our programming screens we have run on about 50cm of good ribbon cable.
Is the screen not attached to the main board of the camera? If it is forget it, you will have a cunt of a time ripping the screen off and soldering it back on connecting cable

I shouldn't say, but I'll post an interesting video if I finish it... So those screens run on their own power, and you could possibly run a cord from a regular cam to this monitor without too many complications? I don't suppose they are on the net, link anywhere?

Those "wires" are normally tiny flexible printed circuit thingys, and are impossibly fragile and infeasible to solder.
