View Full Version : MC19 and MC22 - what are the differences?

I'm not THAT interested in figures from a website or such, I want to hear from people who've owned them.

The most obvious differences that stick out between a MC19 and MC22 is that the MC19 has one brake disc, and no side stand switch. Other than that are they the same? Or any 'behind the scenes' changes (suspension, swingarm, frame etc)

TIA

The 19 has a single front disk, three spoke wheels, horizontal air "intakes" and a box section swingarm.
The 22 has twin disk brakes, 5 spoke wheels, vertical air "intakes" and a banana shaped swingarm.
Also i believe the 22 has a different frame and also a sportier seating position.

The MC19s have a fuel pump and the MC22 doesn't.

And any areas to look at (i.e. areas of common failure) before purchasing a MC19 / 22?

Right now I'm looking at 2:

- A 90 MC19, looks tidy, original paintjob, travelled around 30,000km, $2600
- A 94 MC22, a bit rough (matt black paintjob), travelled around 30,000 km also, $2500

Just thinking about which one to get! Leaning towards the one with the standard paintjob though.

I have a full performance exhaust for sale for the mc22.

the mc22 is a way better bike, better brakes, better frames, better susspension and lighter

Ah yeah I see. Looks like a lot of people reckon the MC22 is better. However this bike is for the mrs, and she isn't exactly going to be putting her knee down on every corner.

Another thing to consider is the super dodgy paintjob on the MC22. It looked pretty rough! Lets face it, no one paints a bike matt black for shits and giggles. If they do, they'll do a good job of it, not a piss poor job. All these things point to the bike being not maintained properly. But I checked everything, and it felt great to ride and the engine sounds spot on. So I'm just wondering if there's anything else to consider on this MC22.

Have a look at the colour of the oil. If it's clear, means it's had at least one recent oil change. Often an indication of it's treatment over it's lifetime. Just because someone has painted it matt black doesn't mean that it hasn't mechanically been looked after.

Any mc22 with over 20,000k's will most likely have been dropped. They crash awesome though, rarely get badly damaged.

Don't go for the single R... get the double, and then you can use it for fun too. If you tidy it up (cost for fairings and paint just over a grand) it will be worth close to $5000.

Where would one go to get a quote for a paintjob? Isn't there some guy on KB that does them at a very reasonable price?

I think Frenchy, Nicksta's lad does paintjobs.

The fuel pump on my MC19 fucked out when the bike had only done around 23,000km. Honda quoted me over $300 for a new one; fuck that I said. I got a new $140 one for a Mini instead, just had to cut a few hoses and it fitted without any dramas.

Checkout ebay in australia - heaps of full fairing kits prepainted and stickered available.

Yeah I saw that - I rang reflections earlier today and they quoted between $1800 and $2100 to get it done, and that's just for doing a gloss black job (decals extra).

Addict - do you know anyone who has purchased those fairing kits? I'm real keen to buy that, but the quality of some chinese product is questionable at best (the 'item location' is somewhere in China).

Also the yoshimura exhaust - is it legit? Lots of fakes around I hear.

Definately not a yoshi pipe, leave the standard exhaust on. I had a MC22 and bought an aftermarket exhaust for it. I was 20km from home on my way to Auckland (from New Plymouth) and I turned around to go back and put the standard exhaust on. Even though I was wearing earplugs the noise was just rediculous. At 110 they are doing around 10k rpm and it is just a horrendous racket.

IMO the MC22 is a far superior bike but if the MC19 is in better condition mechanically and cosmetically they it is probably the better buy.

Yeah I ended up getting the MC22. Checked the oil etc, it was pretty clear and not mucky so I ended up getting it. The front brakes are good (rear brakes are siezed, no surprises there), oil was pretty clear, fork seals good, no wierd noises from engine (have owned a 400RR before and have a rough idea of what its supposed to sound like!) The radiator fan etc works properly, coolant is nice and green - the only bad thing about it was the super-rough matt black paint.

So does anyone have any experience with these aftermarket fairing kits with ebay?

I've PMd both Crazefox and Frenchy and no cigar yet :(

the fairing kits look nice, fit is at about 90%

I have some gloss black side fairings in very good condition - a small scratch and two mounting tabs broken off (but they still mount up very secure)

and the tail section in poor cosmetic condition (needs repaint, no cracks) but structurally fine.

Could sell you the lot for $200

I also have a really good exhaust system which i need to sell, it makes it sound and look amazing while freeing up a lot of hp. (the headers are where Honda restricted the power) - open to offers on this.

I have stacks of parks so if u ever need anything, let me know.

Black "mucky" oil is good.. this means oil is doing what it's supposed to do,, keep the engine clean.. One of the reasons why i use diesel oil

Do you have a regular mechanic/panelbeater you go to?I took mine to my regular panelbeater I've used over the years and he did a full gloss black paintjob and a couple of plastic welds for 600$ cash :-). Then used aftermarket sticker kit from trademe (you can get others though)...

No I don't :(

For the time being I've decided to leave as is, as I'm concerned if I 'do it up' it'll become a target for theft or just vandals. If I decide to sell, I will get fairing from ebay and put it on. However the issue of painting the tank remains...

if your fairings are original and not too cracked you would be better off painting them - the ebay ones are cheap, you usually have to adjust the holes, and they scratch easy - plus, yeah, it doesn't include the cost of painting the tank...
