I got this email today for freeway homestay that is starting up next year. On the surface it kinda sounds like a good idea but the cynic in me tells me its just some muppet making $$ for nothing.

we have never had any trouble finding places to stay and kiwibikers are always willing to put up a stranger.
thoughts? Is this going to take off?

This was from the survey that was completed earlier in the year by some of us. Results were published in another thread. The guy who completed the survey is the founder of this business and that will be where he got your contact details from.

I also wondered how they got my address....
Could it be related to that survey guy?
Apart from KB possibly releasing it that's the only way I can assume they got it as I haven't supplied it to anyone else.

I got an email direct from the survey guy with the invite to the Freeway Homestay website. It's definitely his setup.
Looks like it's $35 a year for membership too. Don't think I'll be going for it, no one would want to stay in my dump...

It's the home owners you need to be wary of...

It could be dodgy, these days you never know what people are capable of. You might wake up in the morning with your big screen TV and bike gone. Or you might wake up with some strangers cock up your ass.

It may work well and not all motorcyclists are on KB. It will be interesting to see if it gets support from Ulysses members and those thousands who ride Harleys. I will keep my options open - wait and see.

With a name like "Freeway" I take that the idea came from America. I think they should have picked something more Kiwi to appeal to us. How bout "B&B&B" (Bikers & Bed & Brekkie") or "Cuz-4-a-night" ;)

I have this objection to paying to make friends. If someone wants my company for the evening then I shell out for some beers or dinner but if I going to be paying for a room, I want to be able to walk round naked singing... and no one wants to see that.

The guy is trying to start a business. That takes courage, commitment, and money. It's easy to be a cynic and knock someone else's efforts but we should encourage people.
Good luck to the guy.

not every idea is a good idea and we arent in school anymore. We dont have to clap and give out participation awards. The idea sucks. NZ is just too damn small and kiwibiker is too damn big to have something like this getting anywhere close to getting off the ground. And what has he invested in this "business"? What is he selling? nothing . . then again, a fool and his money are easily parted.............

When we left the racing at Wanganui we discovered that someone had stuck fridge magnets to our fuel tanks advertising a service called Freeway Homestay (http://freewayhomestay.co.nz/) which from the blurb sounded like quite a good idea, cheap homestay network for travelling motorcyclists.
As a few of us are planning a South Island trip in the next few months this sounded like a cracker idea.....trouble is, the website isn't even completed - no information, nothing at all! Why the hell would you go to all the trouble of doing an advertising drop like that, especially in the holiday season (which wouldn't have been too cheap I imagine) to advertise an uncompleted website?
I can imagine that whoever is behind it is still in the process of getting people with accommodation on board which is fair enough, but to not have any info at all on the site will mean that it would become a 'one hit wonder' for a lot of people...

Looks like quite a promising idea when it's up and running. Your right though, waste of time if they don't have a finished website.

Phil Read is the founder and Director of FreeWay
HomeStay International Ltd. After completing a Master’s
degree in business studies (2009), Phil conducted a survey
of New Zealand motorcyclists to help build a profile of
today’s road-rider. It was during this exercise that he
observed an opportunity to provide a new kind of service to
road-riders and after almost a year of development,
FreeWay Homestay is the result of that observation.
Meh - you never know.

I think it might work. I did a bit of couchsurfing when I was in the US (and hosted a few when I came home to NZ). Global Freeloaders is another one on similar lines.
Check out these sites:
http://www.couchsurfing.org/
http://www.globalfreeloaders.com/
I haven't looked into the Freeway Homestay model to see how it differs (apart from being aimed at bikers) but given the success of the other sites, it might be quite popular.

Now that there's some info on there it doesn't look too bad an idea.

While I'd happily invite anyone I'd met or at least knew from posts on a site like this, a sort of network where people know each other and can vouch for one another, to stay if they wanted, but in the modern world I think you need to be careful about who you invite into your home. It's not like they're going to be in totally separate accomodation - they have access to your personal possessions. I wouldn't be happy with total strangers.

I have been looking into the other side of the site, where members can post up different routes they can take if they are out of town. I think thats a great idea, as if you dont know the area you not gunna find the good roads.
Looks like they will all be illustrated with directions, and photos to entice you there!!
Im relativilty new to road riding, and think its a great idea!!
