Being a Pom (waits for jeering to die down) I'm not really sure what the law is around parking a bike. I rode down to the Viaduct for lunch today (hey, somebody else was paying) and just ended up leaving the bike at the edge of the pedestrianised bit. There wasn't any dedicated bike parking and all the cage spaces were taken, and there's no point going in a car park because the ticket would get nicked.

Is it okay to just park on the pavement? What about pedestrian areas? What's legal and what isn't but you can get away with?

As long as you are not stopping pedestrians walking on by.. then its not a problem.

Down by the viaduct.... I park my bike up near the rails.... (waters edge) and just keep an eye on it.....

Where did you go for lunch???? Just being nosey....lol.

If it is up near "Souls" (sp) I have even parked my bike up near there as well.... and again up by the rails...... Most people will look at the bike but they dont touch it.

The parking wardens are fairly ok in AK city itself.... as long as you arent leaving the bike there all day.... they are lenient.

I even park on the footpath on Ponsonby Rd and have even done it on Queen st... near the road side.

Don't know about the Viaduct but parking in pedestrian walkways could get you a ticket and worse your bike damaged. Keep an eye out for bike parking zones.
Take the ticket with you if need be. If a warden issues a parking ticket write to the parking authority explaining the circumstaces and send a photocopy of your ticket. That's what I would do if for no other reason to kick a bit of arse.

You can park in the Downtown Carpark opposite the Viaduct for free. There is an area just on the right as you enter which is in sight of the operators, or people also park in the various gaps around the place.

There is also free parking in the Aotea Centre carpark and the one on Victoria Street. I guess some of the other carparks are the same, but I haven't used them?

Sky city tower is also FREE....

You go in Hobson St and keep going around to where you prepay exit...
There is a island over on the left.... and you park up on the island.....
the operators are there and can see the bikes.

That is a pretty good compilation of parking spots in Auckland. Add skycity to the list. Thanks Crashe!

Degree, on the corner. I had a Chicken Enchilada off the $10 lunch menu - pretty good.
