On a bit of a road trip over crimbo in the cage with the family.

Part of the trip is to Kennedy Bay in the Coromandel. The missus is suggesting that I could dive in home, pick up the bike and ride up there from Auckland.

Trouble is, I am getting conflicting stories at work here regarding the condition of roads up that end.

Anyone have the word on this at all? Remember, I am a fat bastard on a VL250.

Cheers all

Roads are good (sealed, windy, bit rough) as far as Coromandel township. From memory, the Kennedy Bay road, which runs up the right hand side (east ? West? - always get those mixed up) of the peninsula, turns to gravel a bit after Driving Creek Road. The other side (west ?) is sealed as far as Colville Township. The gravel roads are reasonably goodish gravel, no problem if you are used to gravel riding.

A VL250 would be a quite suitable machine (obviously, not as good as a chook chaser).

But Kennedy Bay itself is a NotNicePlace. The locals are super unfriendly. And aggressive with it.

Cheers mate. We are staying with some people who know the locals so hopefully we will be ok but thanks for the heads up.

Have a good one yourself mate

Yer like Ixion said, the road from driving creek is metal and windy.... There'll be heaps of wankers on the road, so be a bit scary on a bike.
I'll be up there a couple of times between christmas and new year in the ute so if I see you tits up in the bush I'll give you a hand....:)

Locals in the KB area are ok but the main problem is that they use both sides of the road, even on bends - I kid you not that I drive with my window open on the 4x4 so that I can hear them coming.

The road has some fairly big chunks on it at present, I was over there last week. A low 250 would be ok where you can get your feet down in a hurry but vehicles coming the other way would be my main worry on the hundreds of blind bends.

Have fun in our neck of the woods!

Kennedy Bay isn't like the Thames coast road y'know - no mirrors on the corners on dirt roads. The quickesrt way to Kennedy Bay is to to a right at the top end of Coromandel town but the seal ends about 1km up that road and then it's dirt all the way with some fairly steep gradients.
