View Full Version : Decks are more dangerous than motorbikes

Mom

Yes folks it is true, I really think that ACC should be targeting home owners with timber decks and sending them a bill to help cover the cost of treatment for deck related accidents. Our deck has claimed another statistic and this one is going to cost plenty :D

Last Sunday morning I was walking on the deck, as you do, when I felt a distinct snap in my foot followed by an intense white hot pain. Some nice bruising appeared almost immediately. Being the tough guy I am, I have hobbled around unable to weight bear on my left foot all week until finally I had to go and see the doc.

Happy Xmas! I have ruptured my plantar ligament, am currently bandaged from knee to toes and on crutches  Fabulous! I have to have a scan done next week to assess the extent of the damage. It will be months in the healing and may even need surgery to repair :pinch:

So here I am the day before Xmas, unable to navigate my way at any great speed with shopping to finish (food type) and the 101 other things that you need to be doing at this time of the year.

I have all my kids home tomorrow and my Mommy too, I am cooking the hell feed. Well actually that is not true, they are cooking the hell feed and I am going to be sitting with my foot up being waited on. Lucky for me I have a friend coming too who appreciates the need to keep your glass filled :D

So you guys take it easy out there, decks are dangerous, so dangerous that they have the potential to injure you badly enough you wont be riding your bike for a long time :weep:

My rude children reckon it is because I am old :Pokey:

The reality is there are some small deviations in the heights of the decking planks, I just managed to find one that caught my foot in exactly the right place

Boots! Wish I had been wearing something on my feet, that is for sure. Normally at that time of the day I would have had slippers on, but it was hot, so I was bare footed. He is going to do the shopping when he gets home from work.

Bugger! I injured that ligament years back through road running further than was good for me. Separated from the heel bone slightly so know what you're experiencing.

Good excuse to put feet up and be fed alcohol - for purely medicinal purposes of course

She had a trouble free trip there and back. Took just on 2 hours to get back from Thames, which is pretty good going really. The traffic is still moving freely up here, though they reckon it will be crap later on today. The last one to worry about is my son whois riding up aftre he finishes work tonight, hopefully he will get a good trip north too.

Man airlifted to hospital after accident on Deck.
The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew a seriously injured man from Stokes Valley yesterday evening.

The 36 year old Stokes Valley man fell aprox 3 - 4 metres off of a deck onto concrete at his home around 6 pm. He was initially knocked unconscious from the fall.

The Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics who responded to the scene requested the helicopter to transport the man when he was found to be suffering from head injuries.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed in a small park near the mans home and transported him to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department.

I thought I should update this thread. I have been off crutches now for 2 weeks. Now that has to be the best feeling. The bottom of my foot is held together with about 2 metres of strapping tape, that gets replaced every few days, and I have to wear "proper" shoes at all times. I attempted cheating and wearing jandals last Monday and have been paying the price ever since with pain and a creeping bad attitude as a result :innocent:

However, it is improving and as long as I dont push my luck and blow it again it should be all good. I was a good girl and used my crutches for longer than I really wanted to, that has made the difference in the healing, no orthopeadic specialist for me as a result  I am able to walk reasonably well, bit of a limp on sometimes (it hurts you see) even with my "proper" shoes. Uneven ground is the pits  Absolutely friggen hopeless in bare feet/jandals and to a lesser extent my bike boots and I am not not confident of its stability to ride my own bike. I cant imagine putting my foot down and taking my weight as well as my bike, and I cant do tip toe, or take weight on the ball of my foot. I am not prepared to re-injure myself and my physio has warned me about over doing it, so I am being a good girl

I cant tell you how many people have said to me, "OH, did you do that on your bike?"

The Physio costs me $25 a visit, I am happy to pay that. The Ultrasound was free! FREE? How come that was free? I paid $165 for an ultrasound of my boobies not so long ago, and would have been happy to contribute some to the cost of that for my foot, but no, that was free

Weird eh?

Yup, recovering to the point of being able to do more stuff the way you used to is a great feeling. I know where you're coming from. All the best wishes for the rest of your rehabilitation - make sure you use it all as much as you can (and your physiotherapist recommends), a little pain now makes it all that much better down the road.

Yes folks it is true, I really think that ACC should be targeting home owners with timber decks and sending them a bill to help cover the cost of treatment for deck related accidents. Our deck has claimed another statistic and this one is going to cost plenty :D

I too am a statistic of decks. Good to hear you are healing MOM

Grip Tread............what a load of BS! It was winter, I had only a little bit of lawn, and the deck was higher than the small yard, so could not see any ice anywhere. Took the washing out and slipped on the first step, down to the last, bruises for Africa! Ended up that I smashed a disk in my back, and had to have one replaced. Trying to get that on ACC, was bedlem as I did not go running to the doctor at first, as I thought I was a clutz and just badly bruised, it was a couple of months later that all the back pain started, and I ended up taking ACC to the disputes tribunal to prove my plight was due to the fall! I now know that if I hurt my finger, I'll be running to my doc to have it documented LOL

Insanely I am not as young as I used to be :weird: that is what the Physio said today anyways :spanking: State the bleeding obvious why dont you!

It appears my foot has forgotten what the ground feels like when it is on it and wobbles around like friggen jelly if I am not wearing my "shoes". This amazing discovery made last weekend when I wanted to relax at the beach and have a swim. Nope, I cant walk barefoot at all, nope I dont like walking in jandals, shoes are fine. Cant swim in shoes though so off to the chemist to buy some strapping tape. Strap the sucker up and yes I can manage in jandals and bare feet I just hobble is all.

Hence the old comment :pinch: So now I have a nother set of excercises to do. It is progressing really well, but how friggen tedious is the process. Being good is a challenge that I am rising to

I'd pay good money to see you rising to the challenge of "Being Good" Get well soon Mom! Be boot camp for that foot otherwise.
Wish you guys had been in Taumaranui, I'd've liked to have seen the look on the trolls face when you let him have it.
Go look at the main thread for the BFTP, if you haven't already.
Be seeing you soon M & M's lol.

So, I am sick of wearing "proper" shoes all the time. I have been working on general rehab of my foot and can walk with my soft soled slippers on, in the house without a limp. I can also take my weight on one foot for a short while too now. Progress is mind numbingly slow.

Tonight I got home from work and took off my shoes and socks! That is such a great feeling! Went outside and stood on the grass for a bit. Did a few laps of the back yard. Decided to test my bare feet on the concrete. I can happily report I walked all of 30 metres tonight, slowly and deliberately properly in bare feet on the concrete footpath!

Came home and put my shoes back on and walked 3 kms cos I could.

Progress is sweet!
