I think it was Jim2 in the urgent thread who suggested having a memorial ride on the first Sunday of May.

It got me thinking so how does this sound.

On the first Sunday of May, a mass ride is done. Group rides in big cities, by yourself if you like (or are sole rider in small town). A $5 donation is taken from every participating rider. Before the rides start (same time across the country), the names and ages of all our fellow riders who have fallen doing what they love in the 12 months prior (whether KBers or known by KBers or strangers) is read out. Then a minutes silence.

The rides are completed, the money from each ride is collected to one person (my suggestion would be Spank Me if he's willing). That money is then donated to a different charity each year in the names of those fallen. The charity could be decided in the lead up by having a nominations thread and the a poll.

Thoughts?

sounds like a good idea. I guess you would want as many bikers as possible, from KB and not from KB.

Count me in.

Make it a $10 badge ride.... for those that have gone before us...
and each year it has the year stamped on it.....

Maybe the badges could be sent to the main towns around NZ, so everyone can get one. Each main town comes up with their own ride, since not everyone could get together.

Its a bit of work involved in setting it up... but it would be well worth it.

The $10 pays towards the cost of the badge and monies left over goes to a charity.... that helps at accidents... ie: St John's, Fire Service...

sounds like a good idea.
One thing to may be bear in mind is the sensitivity for Sam's family at this time. If riding a bike is what took him away, would they want to be reminded by that if 50 odd bikes turn up for him? For us, that would be fitting as no doubt he was doing what he loved, but his family may have seen it differently.
If anyone personally knew Sam and his family, may be they could shed some light on this. I know if this were me and bikes turned up at my time, as much as I'd be stoked, I wouldn't know what my family would think.

I just see this as a raw-sensative time right now

Great Idea. I am keen to join the ride and donate. Some of the money maybe use to promote safer riding on the roads or educate cagers to look out for bikers.
