Picked the Beast up the other day so thought I'd better take her for a bit of a shakedown and test her out. Well bugger me how tall do ya need to be to mount this thing(alot taller then me!!!) picnic tables are a good place to stop and dismount off the bike.
Filled her up in Stratford and headed north, couldn't feel any difference with the full fuel load handles well from up in the clouds were I am, the ground is along way down I'm eyeballin truck drivers as I pass them:(
Over Mt Messanger and turned right to Mt Damper etc, what a barrel of laughs and big grins on gravel roads it is, I never drifted into corners before(intentionally) and come out laughin, point and squirt then grin yeha.
Through the gorge was sweet it really liked the corners and open straights, shit its loud:2thumbsup.
Stopped at the pub for a burger and sprite and he's bought himself a Tenere, wasn't happy he hasn't been able to ride it much.
Off home and filled back up 260km for 14.5L $25 of pretty hard riding, so I've only got 500KM range bugger that wont get me far:girlfight:
So all and all I'm pretty happy with her, apparently it is a well known bike to a few people. Would love to know what oil etc it has running in her vanes if somebody knows:whistle:
Cheers Neal

Real happy for ya mate. Watched the auction as well. You've got to be happy with that bike for that price :2thumbsup. Looks to be very well set up.

Loads of info over in Advrider (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86958). Warewolf seems to contribute a lot to the index as well.

You get used to the height. I'm 6'1" & still get caught out every now & then. Warewolf tried to shorten it, but see he is now running more standard again.

Cheers, Steve.

I'll have her stripped and on the shed floor in no time.:cool:Probably no need. The previous-previous owner was a mate of mine who worked at AMPS for years. Read the threads on here & advrider started by k9strikex-whatsit for more history.

I tried 28mm lowering links on my bike, but they completely stuffed the rear suspension action, and after adjusting sag to suit they really didn't lower the bike very much. I hardly notice the extra height without them, but I sure notice the rear suspension performing properly!

Enjoy!

I was at work as well and had a breakdown at the time so the Mrs was watching the auction(cant go online @ Fonterra), why she put another bid on at the last second of the auction I'll never know she reckons it was because I told her to.I told her to wait until the last second if she was bidding against someone and try and upset them every 2 mins:nono: but no one else bid so that was sweet:first:.
I'm pretty happy, she is responding to amoural spray well:niceone:

Would a "good" response be not finding it in your breakfast or not finding it on your seat and tyres?

Well the bike that put a smile on my dial took it away just as quick:shit:
I had just finished rebuilding the rear end (new swing arm bearings, link bearing(CHRIST$$$),new sprockets chain and tyres etc and was taking her for her first ride, out to Whanga pub of course.
This was going to be her last ride before her 5000km service, (she didn't make it).
Ride out there was awesome , ride back was great to until I came over the bridge at the Stratford cemetery. Coming off the bridge in 3rd gear feedin it to her there was a bigger vibration than normal coming from the engine(ie this LC4 doesn't vibrate at all, enter tui ad).
I pressed on only a few K's to home and parked her in the shed:angry:.
That night I thought I'd do some reading on the net, oh god horror set in and I went to bed:sick:
I thought I'd spark her up next morning maybe it went away over night(another TUI ad).
She sparked up first pop as always and sat there going (enter bad noises:shit:) I shut her down and looked for KTM dealers with good LC4 mechanic's, chucked her on the back of the truck with the BMW(recall service) and headed to Hamilton.
Dropped her off and explained the noises and were I thought it was coming from, do you want me to start it up I asked,no no I know exactly what it is was the reply, dont worry he said it's nothing money cant fix:shit:.
So I get a phone call a few days later, shes done her main gearbox shaft bearing mate she has to come to bits, I said go ahead mate shes no good to me like she is.
I went up to see her the other day as we are waiting on gaskets etc and there she was laid bare in a fish bin poor thing, he showed me the bearing(no cage but all balls still there), all the cage was sitting stuck to the magnetic sump plug so that did its job.
Now its just a waiting game:done:

:shit: Ouch mate, that is really bad news...sorry to hear it...
I feel that there isn't gonna be much change out of a small fortune for that one...
Is Boyds doing it for you then?
I hope it isn't a contagious disease with the LC4.....

It was contagious from 98-2002 I think, yeah its a fortnights pay minimum so theres been a little bit of overtime been done:yes:If Boyds is opposite the BMW dealer in Hamilton it must be there, When I dropped it off it was like losing a close friend( and we'd only been together for alittle while).

shes done her main gearbox shaft bearing mateBugger!

Which bearing was it exactly? The ball bearing behind the clutch was replaced with a roller bearing, ex-factory 2003-on or as a retrofit/warranty up to 2002. That one, or something else?

It was definitely a bearing in the clutch gearbox area(LH side) I found a few photos on the net that looked exactly the same(other poor buggers like me) mine still had its balls but no cage:shit: there's 3 gears in line I think and it was in the middle I think, not sure , I couldn't look at her for too long it was too heart breaking and wallet of course.

The bearing behind the clutch basket is a well-known and oft-recommended $100 preventative fix (the number one thing to look at for these bikes). Of course there are nay-sayers who say leave it, despite KTM releasing a fix and changing production.

Not to do the fix surely? I mean that it would cost a lot of hours labour to put in the $100 preventative part?

Yep I'm pretty sure it's that bearing, big write ups about it on advrider link that you pointed me to when I brought it but I thought it would have been done when the engine got rebuilt last year or over the previous years since birth, in saying that I wasn't concerned about the engine as it had been rebuilt, I was replacing wheel/shock/swingarm bearings, chains and sprockets etc.
I said to the guy I dropped it off to that I've got a DR750 thats done over 100,000k and its never been touched, he said yes jap bikes will go forever but we like the power and rawness of our Austrian bike dont we, I said yes, he said we must pay for performance, I had to agree.:bye:

Not to do the fix surely? I mean that it would cost a lot of hours labour to put in the $100 preventative part? About that in parts, maybe several hours labour for a competent home potterer following a typical advrider how-to. The hardest thing is finding or making a suitable bearing puller. Pull the clutch cover, pull the clutch, pull the bearing, reassemble. Sure beats the alternative.

warewolf

I said to the guy I dropped it off to that I've got a DR750 thats done over 100,000k and its never been touched, he said yes jap bikes will go foreverCorrection: they used to go forever. Try telling that to a CRF owner with valve grief, as an extreme example. The same thing applies to all modern bikes, although not so dramatically. Unfortunately bikes are being made more to a price these days than ever before. Engineering margins are becoming smaller, they are tending to become disposable.

That looks like fun
