View Full Version : REPSOL CBR250RR - Just picked up a mint one!

Very happy!
Picked it up on the 23rd and I've never been so scared in my riding experience thus far.
It's my Third bike, First being a totally knackered '90 ZXR250, Then a 2008 Sach's MADASS 125, then this!
It's a CBR250RR MC22, 1990, 32000 km, Repsol Race colours with a short exhaust thing (I'm sure these have thier own name? apart from fart cannon:P).
Best of all, it has no accident damage what-so-ever, Clean history and a totally mint engine/gearbox. I'm sure it has aftermarket headers on it too!
Loving it. Port Hills here I come

It's been resprayed in those colours. The decals are readily available from a number of sources. SOmeone has done a nice job though.
The official race livery until about 97 was this:

One of the more excellent bodywork updates for your bike is from Tyga Performance. RC211V styled bodywork looks great in Repsol colours too.

Go on ebay and type in CBR250. Heaps of aftermarket fairing kits on there for these things. I'd suggest its one of these kits. You can land them here for about a grand depending on exchange rates

Just no, OK? Repsol didn't sponsor Honda until 1995, they were signed as replacements for Rothmans when tobacco sponsorship became so unpalatable circuits all over Europe were banning tobacco advertising.
MC22's came in 2 guises. Japanese market only from 1990-1993 and 1994-1999 in Australian spec. Nastro Azzuro and Repsol pre-painted fairing kits are readily available to replace crash damaged OEM panels and update the look. MC22s are popular throughout SE Asia and there is a thriving market in fairing replacement and repainting, including Tyga's RC211V kit.

its difficult to type with one hand but here the story.
i was riding towards lyttleton using the back streets. in preparation for a medium left hand uphill bend i braked and changed down a gear..... i thought i was in 3rd, but i was in 2nd. i was leaning over while braking and accidentally changed into first gear which locked the rear wheel and lost control sending me understeering into the path of an oncoming car.
i managed to steer away from the front of the car and hit the very corner of the car which sent me in the other direction. i then let go of the bike and it came over with me which sent me to ground with the bikes weight . i hit the ground hard and broke my left clavicle (collarbone) and broke it in one place and fractured it in 2 places....
had to happen one day. shame it had to happen at all.
even tho i'd spent every free minute i had on it, i still wasnt familiar.[ the last bike i spent 15 month on was a 4-speed. and thats an influence i thought would go away pretty fast
man life sucks, but it was insured.

What have we learnt? Don't ever thrash a bike you're not 100% used to.
Also, don't want to piss in your cereal or anything, but that bike looks like its been thrashed all its life (See condition of forks / swingarm / triple clamp) and then just been dressed up in a pretty fairing kit and sold on.

it was me...
both party's fault but more mine
he was over the centreline slightly.
i approached the corner at 55km/h, i prepared for the corner, braked on the front a little, then i changed gear..... i thought i was in third (judging by a quick glance at speed vs rpm).
so i changed down to first, released the clutch and locked the rear wheel (i was braking on front at the same time) which caused me to lose control and under-steer straight into the path of an oncoming car.
i didn't hit the car with a stopping force, i managed to haul it left and hit the very corner of his drivers-side bumper. i hit his car, then binned the bike preventing me from bein thrown into the casr. i instead got thrown to the ground and broke+fractured my left clavicle, ruined helmet, ruined jacket and ruined pants.
i stood up immediately and removed my helmet oblivious to my injuries and checked the other guy was ok. i hit him at 44km/h as measured by the police and the skid mark.
i really was a passenger
ive had 3 years + riding exp, buit nothing could pre[pare me for what happened in the blink of an eye
decent gear saved me. everyone was concerned for me. from theb people you saw standing t her, one was a nurse!
i was more concerned about the bike
cant type much miore. typing with one hand sucks, the other is in a sling.

I had a very quick look at the bike after the crash as I was passing by when it was leaning up against a fence and it looked pretty fucked to me. I'm sure the front wheel was moved back a fair bit from where it's supposed to be. I'm guessing it's going to be an insurance write off.

Cheers to those who wished me well.
I have a few thoughts about my crash i wish to share.
I and even the Police officer have said that it wasn't entirely my fault. I was just a victim of circumstance ie; Not knowing the bike well enough. But then again, i should have KNOWN what gear i was in, and not assumed. Assumptions truly are the mother of all fu**up's :'(
2ndly; I'm Still fucked. I could lose my job over this too. Bone's aren't healing well, I'm sleeping and eating plenty and following the stupid "You just fucked yourself up, but here's a pamphlet of silly exercises best done in private, pamphlet"

Put it in the gear you want to be when you drive out of the corner before you enter the corner,. Cornering, braking, changing the gears and blipping the throttle, all at the same time is a bit much, unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing. Planning ahead is good.
And sorry to say this, this was 100% your fault, no ifs or buts.

Would have only make 1000rpm difference if you were in 3rd or 2nd.... Knocking it into first is OBVIOUSLY bad.... BUT you should have felt it compression locking and pulled in a little clutch....
All good if experienced i guess.... Speaking of which, leave the braking while banked over to the really experienced!!
and even the Police officer have said that it wasn't entirely my fault.
Sorry, but even Police Officers make mistakes....
Now, you may well be thinking "Who the F are you!".. And fair enough.
Thing is I once totalled a bike after 4 days of ownership... Ironically it was a $4200 CBR 400 Aero... Back in 1992 ish.
I lost the front on some slippery stuff in the wet. For years I blamed the tyre, road and the conditions. I never really learnt anything until I realised it was the fact i pushed the front outside the traction limit.... and only reciently found out that i should have been in a lower gear and applied a little more power, rather than shut the throttle when i felt it slip....
And the whole thing about "Riding to the conditions" means within yours, and your machines limit!
Now, good to hear insurence paid out, BUT don't expect a very good reception when it comes to your next bike! Your record will be stuffed for about 5 years!
I know this may well sound very harsh, but as they say, truth can hurt.
Really, if you trully learn from this, you will get another bike. Get some top instruction, and be a motorcyclist for LIFE.. Not just the NOW!
Heal up, and i hope your job waits for you (I have been very lucky with mine).
In the mean time, try and buy your bike back... you have really done a good job on it, but there are a few good bits on it, and the rest the scrappy will give you some money for.

Um on the helmet subject, I picked up an "Oxford OX-2" from Cycletreads about a month ago, and I can honestly say I am pleasantly surprised by the value for money! It cost $99, plus $29 for a tinted visor. Its comfortable, fairly quiet, light, and looks pretty good too! Go to www.cycletreads.co.nz for more info... Hi .produKt, sorry to hear about your recent unfortunate events. Hope you are well on the fast road to recovery.
Your experience has brought back to the front of my mind how I need to ride within my skills. On my recent trip to queenstown the self over confidence I had caused a butt clenching moment where I had obviously entered a corner too quickly and crossed the centreline. Thank God there was no one coming the other way or as my friend said "You're also lucky there was a shingle run off on the other side and not a ditch".
Made me realise I need to slow right down and deflate my giant head and realise where my skills are actually are. Quickbuck couldnt have said it any better "motorcyclist for life...Not just for now"
Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you get to upgrade to a nice machine in the near future.

produKt: I find you similar to me when I first joined Kiwibiker, there's something about you that I like.
Could you do me a big favour and post in rant n rave, we need some you know new people to this site to get the threads active purely for this reason. Just pick whatever thread you object or support and post away.
Dean
No, don't just "Post away" anywhere. KB is brimming with people posting in threads for no reason, simply to get themselves heard (read).
One of the worst offenders for that has just been banned, we don't need any more.
produckt, feel free to browse and post when you have something to say, in whatever forum you like.
Sucks about the bike - been in a similar situation myself (overcooked a corner on an unfamiliar bike, leading to run wide - thankfully nothing coming the other way). Glad you see you are taking ownership of the error (most on here don't - ever) and hopefully learning from it. Please don't do it again. if you wouldn't mind.

Might I suggest looking for another smaller bike, hone your riding skills on something smaller and less powerful.
You have just experienced a nasty accident due to your inexperience, you could have come off a lot worse.
Stick with a 250, go riding with mature people, work on getting your full license, then look at getting a bigger bike.
A friend of mine has a CBR250 for sale, not sure which model, he did mention he was thinking about new aftermarket Repsol fairings for it too.
Hope to see you on some rides before winter roles in. And we'll give you a go on the minimotos if your keen.

Hey.
Well i do have a Sach's MADASS 125 that's my current. But I'm cornering on the footpegs regularly. Kinda feel like i've 'clocked' the bike, if you get what i mean.
And yea, i am trying to stick with a 250, but all the exciting ones are the older ones in the 1990's ish. I love the 4cyl scream of a mid 90's bike.. simply can't get enough of it =\
So keen on the minimoto's ;) - Could be a bloody good learning experience for me?.
But anyhow, the plan is to either stay on the madass and accept that i can't goto the coast or to maruia springs or hamner on it. Or get a cheap 250 and go do some exhaustive advanced lessons thru mainland, and then work up from there?
Got soo much on my plate right now as is, so it'll take a while.

.
With all respect most people can scrape footpegs on a Sach even newbs can, its better to master on 250's then once not you but experienced bikers say you are ready then you are ready to upgrade. Never go by your own judgement, afterall look how that corner ended up. (Im not being a smartarse).

Yep, the minimotos are wicked fun. Keep that old helmet, it's perfect for the minimotos, you don't want to use a good helmet as it's guaranteed to hit the ground sooner or later. lol
Take your time finding a new bike, it's not like you can ride yet anyway. Stay legal, stay safe.

Well the VFR will suck for you then, as they are more about the mid-range, and rumble more than scream.....
The Cheap 250 idea is the best one yet.... After all your aspirations are for a bigger bike eventually... BUT you will need the skills first.
Save the money you would have spent on the bike, and spend it on training courses. Seriously (we all need them).

Yer, what e sed. I find the vfr is best in between about 8 and 13k. Much more than that and your just revving for the hell of it, less and you aren't moving..
Where as the cbr doesn't start moving till 10 ?

Yea, CBR250rr.s get up n go around 14,000rpm, but still decent acceleration before that.
An update too. I have a new CBR. In better condition than the last.

Good thanks.
Rather large bump (the end of the broken bone) pokes out of my shoulder and moves around in a freaky way when i move my arm lol
other than that, only get pains when sitting down with arms outfront (ie playing xbox, which sucks because the pain is very real =\
Asides from that - all good. Do heavy lifting every day and still no worries :)
new bike is good too. Infact it's mint
